Just that really. Luckily I haven't overheard anything about myself yet, but it occurred to me today that it must happen fairly often and I'm just curious to be honest! Also, if it happened to you, did the relationship survive afterwards or did you fall out?

I overheard the midwife telling the dr “I have a very overweight mum to be having a small baby….”
I was 2 days from giving birth and he weighed just shy of 10lb!!!

I review internal communications as part of my job, I frequently remind people that it is all monitored by me. I have a junior colleague that loves to make fun of my physical features and clothing. For reference, I’m very normal looking, and dress work appropriate, though apparently wearing the same skirt once every two weeks isn’t allowed without ridicule. She just found out I know quite literally everything. January shall be interesting…

I hope the revenge is sweet

Overheard ex boyfriend’s sister commenting that I was nothing compared to his ex and expressing complete shock at why he’d go out with me. His Dad was in the same room as me and tried to distract me. The whole family was toxic so it was a relief when we broke up, knowing I wouldn’t have to see them again.
Worst was in hospital with DD when she was suicidal at my lowest point and overhearing the nurse loudly telling her colleagues that I was performative and DDs mental health was no doubt down to family issues. I was trying to put on a brave face for DD who was there when I spoke to the nurse. No doubt it came across as strange because I was trying not to fall apart for DDs sake. Heard her telling colleagues the next morning that she had no mental health training (but was working on a mental health ward) which was evident.

Oh Jesus I would have shown that nurse what performative was! Disgusting behaviour. I really hope you took her to task. More importantly Inhope your DD is okay? Sending ❤️

Feel lucky as I have only ever overheard people saying nice things about me behind my back.

I found out recently that someone who bullied me dreadfully in high school was recently awarded an OBE for ‘services to disabled people’

The main theme of the bullying was my being a ‘spastic cripple’ due to being a wheelchair user.

That wasn’t something I overheard though, obvs, I just wanted to share.
I once overheard someone tell her friend that she was to ‘shoot her’ if she ever ended up looking like me :(

Tbh I’d be emailing whomever organised the award and telling them. I am that level of withheld pettiness. Maybe nothing will happen but I’d be happy to dish out some overdue shining a light on her bullying

perhaps she’s changed massively by an extreme life event but she can’t take back what’s said

At school I wore NHS specs ..had frizzy hair ..had spots and was so timid I had no personality at all.I was the but of constant jokes by boys who commented about ' ugly duckling never turning into swans' which was a reference to my surname. Often telling me to 'fuck off you ugly c**t'
Years later a lot about me had changed and I met up socially with the boys from school. It felt wonderful to see them floundering after I revealed who I was in a former life . reminded them if the names they called me and enjoyed telling them to fuck off when they asked me out

My mum told my partner at the get to know them dinner she had chosen the wrong sibling. We are 28y married, A has divorced twice and not properly worked for 15 years.

Some of these stories are heart breaking 💔

Sending healing

Thortour · 23/12/2025 07:18

I overheard work friends discussing me and one said that I was ugly and she wouldn't want her 'normal' friends knowing she knew someone who looked like me.

I may have not looked like she wanted me to but I'd given her £300 when her husband had left her because he had cleaned out all their bank accounts.

My 20 Yr old room mate died in a tragic car accident. I sat on a plane with a total stranger girl months after and she was talking about me and my late friend in the most horrible way. It was a defining moment: I do not and would never care about what anyone thinks or say about me !

clickyteeclick · 23/12/2025 06:58

My mother saying that I was after my dad’s money when he died. I was 26 and heartbroken and in no way after his money ❤️‍🩹

Dita73 · 23/12/2025 06:58

When I was 14 I’d had a school photo taken (so had my brother,2 years younger). I heard my mum saying to my Aunt that mine was awful and “I suppose they all go through a funny looking stage”. She kept my brother’s picture and not mine. Felt mortified

I overheard my mum saying that they’d only resuscitated me when I was born because they thought she couldn’t have other kids. She said “If I’d known I would have had “Golden Child” I would have told them not to bother and just leave her in the bucket.”

Christ that's horrific. I hope you don't waste your time on these awful people!

Francestein · 23/12/2025 06:30

@Figcherry Thank you so much. I have amazing people in my life! I’m very, very grateful!

fouroclockrock · 23/12/2025 06:30

My dad used to say lots of things to me and in front of other people (most of which were untrue and not very nice). I can think of a time though (I hadn’t thought about it for ages). Standing in the school playground in the first or second year of high school in the morning waiting for friends to arrive. A group of 3 or 4 older girls standing a metre or so away from me. One girl turns to look at me and says “if i looked like her I’d wear a bag in my head.” I can’t really remember the rest of it and I don’t think the other girls said anything but I remember standing trying very hard not to cry but also look like I knew that anyway so it didn’t really bother me to hear it. You have to wonder why people say such things.

I'm so sorry, that's truly dreadful.
I hope you have lovely people in your life now.

I found out I was saved in a friend’s phone as “Big Fat Chris”. Friendship ended immediately.

GreyCarpet · 23/12/2025 06:11

I didn't have a good relationship.with my mother and one of her things was to lie about me and make.me out to be a 'problem child'.

I once overheard her telling her friend on the phone that she was having so much trouble with me going to the local park in the evening, getting drunk and having sex with boys.

I wasn't. I didn't even go into this park in the daytime because of its reputation as somewhere that teens went to get drunk and have sex. I knew who the kids were who went in but I had nothing to do with them either.

I also overheard her telling my dad there was "something wrong" with me when I was 10 and that she was going to take me to see a 'child psychiatrist'. My dad told her that she should just do it if she wanted to rather than just talk about it.

This was a fairly common thing - there's something wrong with you, the men in white coats will take you away etc but this was the first time I'd overheard her having a conversation with someone else.about it and not just throwing it to me as an insult.

She said she couldn't because, if she did, it would go on my permanent record, none of the decent local secondary schools would want me, I'd never get a job and then she'd be stuck with me forever.

Lifealittleboulder · 23/12/2025 06:01

Sadly, most of the things that are negative were said to my face…

Moaningminnieagain · 23/12/2025 04:43

Mine wasn't as dreadful as these but when I was at college, I got a book in class where someone had written his notes about the whole class. I thought we got on well as i was nice and we had chatted loads about music yet he put that I was boring. My friend who was always quite aloof was called beautiful. Changed my brain dynamic really and I still think I must be boring even though he was a complete loser!

I know I’ve been gossip fodder but it’d kill me to see it written down.

It did sting, but I have much more to lose than she does due to me being significantly more senior. I have to keep reminding myself she’s not worth it and the messages are driven by her own insecurity. Why on earth people think teams is an appropriated forum for mean thoughts is just beyond me though, 🤦‍♀️.

Mithral · 23/12/2025 04:11

When I was 18 and first year at university I was in the loo at the pub and overheard two people from my halls laughing that I'd made an effort to look nice. One of them said "I think she actually thinks she looks good".

I didn't think that I was (as ever) utterly aware of being ugly but I had put on some nice clothes and some makeup. It took me literally years to get over it and I'm still quite sad now thinking about it 30 odd years later. It tapped in precisely to what I'd always thought which was that it was humiliating to dress up in any way as it looked like I was somehow acting above my station or something.

I don't give a fuck now and dress as I please but I just wanted to disappear into the background for years of life.

”People are generally good at heart.”
—Anne Frank

I don’t know, Anne. After reading this thread, I’m not quite sure about that.
People can be real assholes, if you ask me.
And heartless on top of it.

I think Anne Frank may have seen things worse than the experiences on this thread.

Someone crashed into my car while it was stationary. First car, first time dealing with something like this. I phoned my Dad for advice and he told me what to do, I was worried I’d forget the process so said “Thank you Dad! Bye!” and hung up to call the insurance company, except the line stayed open & I heard my Mum say “that was quick” and my Dad said “well that’s Sequins isn’t it? Gets what she wants out of us and then we don’t exist”. He wasn’t joking either, it was cold and mean, how he said it. The two of them went on to pull almost every aspect of my character to pieces and I heard it all. I was breathless with shock. I’d left home at 18 and never asked for a penny from them or help with anything since apart from this car situation. They were a very co-dependent couple “us against the world” types, and loved falling out with and moaning about family members so I shouldn’t have been surprised really.
