Just that really. Luckily I haven't overheard anything about myself yet, but it occurred to me today that it must happen fairly often and I'm just curious to be honest! Also, if it happened to you, did the relationship survive afterwards or did you fall out?

I was about 8years old and heard my mother and gran talking in the front room, mother said I wish I never had her, that I was the reason my father had an affair and then gran said well she just isn’t a likeable child is she, mother then replied she should have stopped at 1 because (brother is perfect)

a memory I have never forget

That's truly awful what a horrible thing to hear.

Younger sister of a friend. I was walking out of school and I heard her say to someone “she’s still got those old shoes”. Er, they were brand new but in the same style. She was a particularly plain girl but still thought it was ok pick on others’ appearance

I'm not sure wrongly thinking your shoes were older is picking on your appearance. Calling someone a plain girl is though.

Missingducks · 23/12/2025 17:16

Not overheard but said to my face ... New stepmother when I (then aged 13) was there for a weekend, "I have never wanted children"

I got called tacky half way through my A level art exam. It put me off drawing and painting natural subjects for years.

Are you sure they didn’t say something like the paint was tacky? As in not dry? It seems a very strange thing for an examiner to say at all about someone’s work, never mind mid-exam.

ForCoralScroller · 23/12/2025 17:14

Omg!

ForCoralScroller · 23/12/2025 17:14

I walked into a house party where this woman (i mean woman in the sense that I was an 18 year old girl and she was mid to late 30s) telling my boyfriend he could do way better 🤣. He in fact could not do better, he was a druggie with no job and nowhere to live 🙃 I am 39 now and he has been an ex bf for 20odd years and he has been promoted to full blown junkie 🤢 (hes a year older than me)

I was on the phone trying to arrange an appointment with a customer but my system was playing up and it was taking much longer than usual. I booked it in and the woman thought she hung up on me. She began talking to her husband about how thick I was and how I couldn’t book an appointment because I was that thick!? I stayed on the line in hope she would realise how thick she was for not hanging up.

🤣🤣 I had similar to this..

working as a Medical Secretary in a GP surgery.. I called the District Nursing team about why an elderly patient had been discharged. I had tried talking to them by email but was getting nothing that made sense back so decided to call.

I got through to the office and the lady that picked up, called across to the one I’d been emailing and I heard her saying ‘oh godddd it’s not wickerwoman is it’ then some other muttering about me.

when she came through to me I said ‘I just heard all that’ and she stuttered and said ‘oh, that wasn’t about you’ in a panic.. I said ‘yes it was’ then was really laughing because she couldn’t get herself together throughout the entire call while I was overly nice to her, great it was!

Wow, that is heartbreaking. They are both twats, and that teacher shouldn’t be anywhere near children.

My SIL tells anyone who’ll listen that I’m mentally unstable and whacked up on meds. She’s actually referring to an episode 25 years ago when I was distressed at being tested for MS and the doctor gave me a little something for my anxiety.

Also, I’m not supposed to know that she had to go to A&E after self harming. Perhaps she should keep her gob shut about me or I might just have to bring it up.

Tbh I’d be emailing whomever organised the award and telling them. I am that level of withheld pettiness. Maybe nothing will happen but I’d be happy to dish out some overdue shining a light on her bullying

perhaps she’s changed massively by an extreme life event but she can’t take back what’s said

It has made me wonder about the people who were bullies at school, I suspect that some have no idea they were bullies, for whatever reason, maybe they think the person they picked om 'deserved' it, or they don't realise what they did was that bad.
The only person I know IRL who I know for a fact was a dreadful bully at work is my ex-SIL, she used to tell tales of her bullying, convinced that she was only giving the recipient 'what they deserved' and finding their distress very amusing.

One 'story' that springs to mind is the woman who started her new job on night shift with a packed 'lunch' to eat in the middle of the night, my SIL was apparently horrified and shouted at her that is was unacceptable to eat a meal in the middle of the night, even if working a night shift. She proudly told me that she 'wouldn't let' the new employee eat her packed lunch, going as far as taking it off her so she couldn't eat it. So she eventually stopped bothering trying to bring food in to eat.

But hopefully this means they learned and changed their way?

maybe, I have no way of knowing, still stings though

The middle manager who informed me that I had no business being in my job because disabled people are only fit for things like cleaning or collecting trollies in supermarkets.

Seemed quite surprised that I had the mental acuity to know the law and to follow formal procedures. I wrote the formal procedure.

I had a manager tell me that she didn't believe in 'reasonable adjustments' and in her opinion if I couldn't do 'all of the job' I should be sacked.

The bit of the job that I couldn't do was to help the team carry the equipment downstairs for the monthly presentation meeting we had to put on. That's all.

PondLurking · 23/12/2025 16:31

Lighthearted one: On our way to dinner before a school dance, my mother and I were chatting it up about unattractive we both thought Sarah Jessica Parker was, why would she be considered a fashion icon, etc. etc. just really laying into her.

We arrived at dinner, sat down with my friends and their parents, and one girl's dad made a comment to me along the lines of, "Has anyone ever told you that you resemble Sarah Jessica Parker?"

My mother and I just burst into uncontrollable laughter. After we could breath again, we explained ourselves and he was so shocked that his wife tried to interject and tell us, "He really fancies SJP, It's a compliment!" which only made things MORE awkward since I was underage, so ... anyways.

A good lesson to mind what you say in passing, or else it'll come back to nip you in the backside.

when I was a student teacher, I heard my mentor at my second placement tel another teacher that she wouldn’t want me teaching her kids. Has always stuck with me.
I complained to the university and was moved placements. Just retired after 25 years in teaching but I will never forget how that teacher made me feel.

I had a really horrible experience with 2 older teachers on placement 2 as well. The rest of the dept rallied round me tho, I still kick myself for putting up with it and not letting uni know.

I was driving some friends to a weekend away, one of them was having some issues so I made a suggestion. I happened to look in the rear view and she was rolling her eyes and mocking me talking from the back. Ot still stings even though I know she's horrible.

These days as I'm braver, I'd have pulled over & suggested she make her own way there

Summerbay23 · 23/12/2025 13:01

An older gentleman in the doctors whispered (loudly) to his wife “look at the size of her, bet she isn’t married”.

I pretended not to hear while fighting back tears ☹️

HRTQueen · 23/12/2025 12:58

My mum telling my nanny (who was crying at the time) that I wasn't abused as much as social services made out and that I was often a brat. The man went to prison ffs and it was reported in the local press

my mother is a horrible woman

MrsBuntyS · 23/12/2025 12:53

It was a work 360 review thing and someone I had worked with for years completely laid into me. Said I was arrogant, had an awful personality etc. this was an older man that I had worked closely with and managed. He was always lovely to my face. I then realised that very few work ‘friends’ are real friends and that most people just hate being there and hate their colleagues. Life lesson learned.

OLDERME · 23/12/2025 12:52

Mumsnet telling her friend that I was an accident. Stuck with me for so many years.

I overheard my mum saying that they’d only resuscitated me when I was born because they thought she couldn’t have other kids. She said “If I’d known I would have had “Golden Child” I would have told them not to bother and just leave her in the bucket.”

I’m so sorry so many of you have awful, abusive parents.

That’s horrendous and no reflection on you. Some of these cunts sound mentally ill or with personality disorders. I never fail to be shocked at the evil abusive stuff I read on here.

And the poster who heard girls slagging her off in the queue for the toilet - they were probably jealous or threatened by you in some way.

What upsets me most is those of you who have let these arseholes affect you for the rest of your lives - that’s a tragedy - they should have absolutely no control over anything you do today bc anyone who says nasty shit like these about someone is a very unhappy, nasty person themselves who deserves pity and revulsion. Don’t turn their issues onto yourselves.
