Husband told my sister to ‘fucking grow up’

I’m stuck in the middle over something which happened last night. Myself and DH met up with my Dsis and her partner for a dinner in a local restaurant.

The service was a bit slow and DH was getting a bit fed up/hangry. When it eventually came out, everything was placed into the middle for us to share out (think Chinese/thai type meal).

DH immediately started serving items on to his plate and my Dsis basically asked him to stop so she could get a video. He asked why and she said so she could upload on her to her social media. He then said the fucking grow up comment and there was an awkward atmosphere.

DH hasn’t apologised and I’ve had a shitty text off Dsis today. Luckily we aren’t spending Christmas together.

I absolutely think DH was in the wrong but he’s protesting his innocence and said having waited long enough for the food to arrive he shouldn’t have been told he couldn’t eat it.

Monthly dumps are for celebs and rich people that are followed by people who want to see their lives but don’t actually post apart from 10-20 photos in one dump.

The same in your 30’s thinking anyone cares that much unless you’re rich and famous.

How did the rest of the meal go, what was the atmosphere like if this was before you started eating?

I'm sort of with your husband but wouldn't have used that language/tone in those circumstances.

Oh yes, never thought of that. 😮

No87 · 21/12/2025 18:35

Team DH. Could he have spoken better yes, but stopping the table from eating for a social media post, ridiculous 🙄

FOJN · 21/12/2025 18:34

Your sister messaging you to complain about your husband's behaviour is just another sign of her immaturity. Tell her to take it up with him and stop engaging with her about it.

firstofallimadelight · 21/12/2025 18:29

She was out of order for expecting him to wait while she videoed. He was out of order for swearing at her. They should both apologise.

Smartiepants79 · 21/12/2025 18:27

I would have zero time for an adult who expected me to wait (even longer than I already had) to eat food that I had ordered and was going to be paying for just so they could record it for social media.
I might not have been so blunt but I’d have been thinking the same thing. Dsis is behaving like a self-obsessed twat.

I think you and your sister need to grow up...the done thing for grown adults to video their food? Really?

Perhaps your husband shouldn't have sworn, although my family use the f word continually amount ourselves

Why are you including OP in your judgement? She simply relayed the message she’d received, she didn’t comment on its validity. It’s not obligatory to attack the OP, even in AIBU!

Crikeyalmighty · 21/12/2025 18:25

I’m with your DH in sentiment but I would have thought it but said it in private - I’ve got a few friends who can be a bit like this too - I don’t get it I must admit

That she was shocked he was so rude and it’s not her fault he doesn’t do social media so isn’t aware that’s the done thing with a lot of people in this day and age. And that it was a 5 second video for her story so could he not have just waited as the food wouldn’t have gone cold.

ThisQuirkyHare · 21/12/2025 18:22

Well done that man.

Team DH.

She was being an idiot and quite rightly should grow up. If she were 17 maybe but at 30+ she should know better.

I wouldn't apologise. She's just trying to control the narrative rather than reflect on the fact she was being an idiot.

CutePixieGirl · 21/12/2025 18:21

Both sounds incredibly immature.

XWKD · 21/12/2025 18:21

She should have been ready to take a photo as soon as the food arrived. Asking him to stop is incredibly rude.

Superhansrantowindsor · 21/12/2025 18:20

I’m with your DH. A grown adult wanting to film their meal! Good grief.

Making people wait extra time to eat their food, while it gets cold, is NOT ‘the done thing’, @HusSisargument - it is narcissistic, self centred and downright rude.

sloth75 · 21/12/2025 18:19

Team dh here. I wouldn't want my food to go cold just so someone could take a video. Entitled much?

Lottie6712 · 21/12/2025 18:19

Team DH

Tara220 · 21/12/2025 18:18

Im with DH he was rude but whats the obsession with photographing food? I have a friend that does this.even if its a bloody sandwich! She even posted on facebook once that theres only half of mine in the photo because id started eating before she could get her phone out

MrsDoubtingMyself · 21/12/2025 18:17

You know that she does the IG Shit. You COULD have jumped in and sorted this

canuckup · 21/12/2025 18:17

Team DH

Fangisnotacoward · 21/12/2025 18:16

Yeah, unless your sister is a teenager, im with your DH.

Im not waiting any longer when im hungry for someone to upload a video to SM. To be honest 99.9% of people on SM are unlikely to give a shit about a video of a meal.

Elsvieta · 21/12/2025 18:16

Team DH in that he was perfectly justified in not cooperating with her sm nonsense. But he didn't need to be so aggressive and rude. "Haha, on your bike, I'm starving" would have covered it.

Well you can see from the poll that the majority are supporting your DH on this one!

Your husband might have been a bit rude, but as the food had taken ages and he was hungry, then wanting to eat straight away was not surprising, and your sister was far ruder telling him to stop serving food so she could do a video for social media.

Your sister owes your DH an apology and really ought to respect real life a bit more than the fantasy world of social media.

WhistPie · 21/12/2025 18:13

Go out with people who want to eat and socialise next time, not with your sister who wants to live her life through social media. Your DH is right, she needs to learn to behave like an adult.

ThatJadeLion · 21/12/2025 18:13

I think your DSIS was really rude, I think that's really bad manners. Obvs your DH shouldn't have said that though
