Husband told my sister to ‘fucking grow up’

I’m stuck in the middle over something which happened last night. Myself and DH met up with my Dsis and her partner for a dinner in a local restaurant.

The service was a bit slow and DH was getting a bit fed up/hangry. When it eventually came out, everything was placed into the middle for us to share out (think Chinese/thai type meal).

DH immediately started serving items on to his plate and my Dsis basically asked him to stop so she could get a video. He asked why and she said so she could upload on her to her social media. He then said the fucking grow up comment and there was an awkward atmosphere.

DH hasn’t apologised and I’ve had a shitty text off Dsis today. Luckily we aren’t spending Christmas together.

I absolutely think DH was in the wrong but he’s protesting his innocence and said having waited long enough for the food to arrive he shouldn’t have been told he couldn’t eat it.

DH was rude but in my opinion Dsis was ruder. Asking people to let their meals go cold when hungry because she wants to video it 🙄. How selfish.

Greenwitchart · 23/12/2025 18:00

Both were immature.

You DH should not be swearing and generally behaving like a toddler (being impatient/grumpy and immediately jumping on the food which is really uncouth if you are sharing with others.

Your SIL should be less obsessed with social media but on the whole I think your DH is the one who created all this awkwardness and I would have left the table and gone home if someone was swearing at me like that.

FrizzyFrizbee · 23/12/2025 17:43

He was irritated because the food was slow. Then, your sister failed to read the situation and somehow thought it was an opportunity for HER social media gesturing which yes, if not immature , is so utterly crass. Did your sister have the good manners to warn everyone in advance that the meal was about her and her social media ego trips?

And yet you want an apology for your sister from your husband? True, he used bad language which is not great, and presumably your sister is a saint …

I'm sorry, but being in a group with someone who is obsessed with taking selfies and other pics for SM is an absolute fucking PITA.

Your DH was a bit OTT though.TBH I would keep out of it and let them sort it out between them.

absolutely this, especially when they will only pick out and post the photos they look great in!!
helloo shallow! 🤣

Scarlettpixie · 23/12/2025 17:36

He was rude and shouldn't have snapped (even if he thought it). He should apologise.

My ex used to behave like this. No control over his emotions.

Whilst taking pictures is annoying, I cant believe how many people think swearing at the dinner table is in anyway acceptable, particularly when it is used in aggression, directed at someone.

Yeah agree with this.

If I told a greedy in law “lose some fucking weight Sandra” because she was hoarding all the snacks, it wouldn’t be acceptable just because it’s true.

If I told someone in the supermarket to “pay attention or move out the fucking way” because they were blocking the aisle dilly dallying on their Facebook, it wouldn’t be acceptable just because it’s true.

Generally it’s understood that there is a level of etiquette and courtesy that we extend to people, even when they annoy us with minor inconveniences.

Yes SIL was annoying, but if someone cannot wait 5 seconds for their food without berating someone else, they are the problem. He didn’t even have to indulge her, he could have said “I don’t fancy waiting” or “not tonight!” and it would have been a non-event.

TheAutumnCrow · 23/12/2025 17:15

It’s also incredibly immature of Sister to try and rope you into it, OP. Pathetically manipulative.

That she was shocked he was so rude and it’s not her fault he doesn’t do social media so isn’t aware that’s the done thing with a lot of people in this day and age. And that it was a 5 second video for her story so could he not have just waited as the food wouldn’t have gone cold.

Did you reply that most people don't find eating out a reason to video a plate of food for instagram? If she wants to video her food, tell her to go out by herself - pretentious nonsense!

Soontobe60 · 23/12/2025 17:10

Coffeeishot · 21/12/2025 16:39

I mean he swore at his sister in law is he in the habit of telling people to fuck off when he is agitated !

If my DH swore at my sister like that because she wanted to video his food, she’d most likely swear back at him, they’d both laugh and then tuck in to the meal!

God, she's selfish to the bone isn't she?

Even trying to blame your DH for her behaviour because 'it's not her fault he doesn't do social media'.

She would've got a lot more than 'fucking grow up' off of me.

InterestedDad37 · 23/12/2025 16:46

I'm with sis 👍
Harmelss, doesn't matter, 5 seconds delay maybe. I'm sure husband has the odd habit or ritual which others might find annoying.
Does he collect anything, for example, or insist on doing something in a certain way?

OonaStubbs · 23/12/2025 16:40

Food is for eating, not taking photos of. I am fully behind your DH, your DS needs to grow the fuck up. Nobody cares about her social media.

bigboykitty · 23/12/2025 13:12

I'm not an Instagram food nob, but if BIL told me to fucking grow up, I'd be delighted never to see or speak to him again.

RedToothBrush · 23/12/2025 11:44

Team they are both fucking twats who need to grow up.

TheAutumnCrow · 23/12/2025 08:49

ChristmasCookie1 · 21/12/2025 23:08

Seriously! Do you really not understand how Instagram works!? No one posts photos of random kids fgs, it's of the food!

Actually I invented it.

Toooldtocare25 · 23/12/2025 08:01

Team DH and I would say the same.

Aquabluemouse · 22/12/2025 17:27

They were both unreasonable. He shouldn’t have told her to “fucking grow up” and she should get a life and stop revolving it around social media. They both sound irritating/rude.

Onefortheroad25 · 22/12/2025 17:23

I’m with your dh. People taking photos of their food are generally arseholes. Who wants to see your food? Just eat it and enjoy.
Maybe he shouldn’t have sworn at her but other than that he was right to tell her to grow up.

DSis is 33, DH a bit older.

he told her the truth. She needs to grow up

DH is correct - she needs to grow up

Have you read the thread at all, you're a complete outlier on here. You're being strangely personal to me, like a stalker or something, probably a man are you?

Anyway, its great, as I say, keep it up.

In fairness to @BitOutOfPractice, I don’t agree with her on this particular thread, but I’ve seen her on plenty of others, and she is not a stalker. I think you are out of order, @soupyspoon.

Notquitethetruth · 22/12/2025 14:38

Team DH. I hope you share this thread with him. How arrogant of your sister to think her need to take a photo of the food was more important than everybody else's need to eat. She's rude and entitled. At 33 is she that desperate for likes on her social media?

GAJLY · 22/12/2025 14:19

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 21/12/2025 16:42

I think she was ruder.

Telling someone not to eat food that he’d ordered and presumably paid for. He wasn’t even eating it, just putting it on his plate.

Maybe he shouldn’t have sworn, but I think she was the ruder person.

Agreed.
