Scratchcard Win

So yesterday we had our annual pre-Xmas family meal (my brother, sister partners and kids).

every year we have done this I’ve bought everyone a scratchcard as a bit of fun.

BIL won £50k on his card yesterday and is not going to share it!

I think he should!!!!

He should have said he lost and slipped it in his pocket 😆

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/12/2025 17:37

I’m not sure I’d share as that’s a life changing amount of money and you listed off a lot of people round that table. If it was your BIL then what does your sister think

CombatBarbie · 21/12/2025 17:33

Either agree beforehand or put your name on the back of the card. In our family I just cant see anyone, in law or not, not sharing it between the family. Saying that, one of us always always says over £1k its shared.....

Absolutely

Course you would 🤥😏

This is exactly why I have never given scratch cards as gifts. I know it sounds awful but I would be gutted if someone won a significant amount with a card I bought them.

Why? Does nobody have any grace left? I'd be delighted if a card I bought won someone something!

Happyjoe · 21/12/2025 17:30

No of course not! It's his, won it fair and square. Don't suck out the fun of the whole with your greed, it's his money. Try be gracious!

Nevermind17 · 21/12/2025 17:24

I wouldn’t want someone to buy me a scratch card if I had to give the winnings away. What’s the point? It’s not really a gift for them. Just buy one for yourself. You wouldn’t buy someone a box of chocolates and then dictate they have to share them equally amongst the family. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ohpleeeease · 21/12/2025 17:21

I think he should share. The point of doing it as a group is surely that if one wins, everybody wins, it’s just that the actual holder of the winning ticket gets the applause.

Our rule is similar to a PP, anything under £1000 the winner gets to keep. More than that and we need a conference!

MissLead · 21/12/2025 17:18

blubberyboo · 21/12/2025 16:38

Too late for retrospect

You cant give a gift and expect him to share it
Thats really mean of you to make people scratch for a win and excitement only to snatch the win from under their nose

You should have just scratched them all yourself in a corner

I don’t scratch myself in the corner hun

Yes we have this rule too. Never had to put it into practice though!

Nor us but this year Rodney, this year...

Popfan · 21/12/2025 17:16

I would never gift a scratch card or a lottery ticket etc for this exact reason!

youalright · 21/12/2025 17:15

skyeisthelimit · 21/12/2025 15:45

and this is why I never give scratchcards as a present.

If you do give them, you need to accept that somebody might win big.

Same would never do this for this exact reason

CrackingOn50 · 21/12/2025 17:14

This happened to extend family.
The winner kept the vast majority but paid for a weekend away in the UK for everyone that cost less than 2k and a fancy hamper each.

She kept 95% of the winnings but also made everyone feel appreciated and as though they’d had a ‘share’ in her good fortune.

Vodka1 · 21/12/2025 17:13

Noted. If anyone buys me a scratch card - I'll do it in private.

You can't demand half a gift back 😂

TheAquaTraybake · 21/12/2025 17:10

So how much do you want, OP? What do you feel is fair?

Honestly, do you choose all of your gifts based on what you want to share with the recipients?

It would be nice if he gave you some small amount, but at what point does it just turn in to you buying lottery tickets ostensibly for gifts but secretly hoping you get to cash in as well? Like a 'gift' to both of you.

Anyahyacinth · 21/12/2025 17:07

It wouldn’t occur with me not to share..maybe I’d be canny and share by family not individual or big lump of it shared but never just not share at all…wow…find it hard to credit someone in a family wouldn’t share their good luck

caringcarer · 21/12/2025 17:06

You gave him the card. So it's his to do as he pleases with.

LetItGoHome · 21/12/2025 16:56

How do you know he isn't going to share any of it? Did you ask?
He may well throw some your way once the money lands in bank. If you were cheeky enough to ask or tell him you think he should be sharing, that may have been enough to change his mind!

myglowupera · 21/12/2025 16:52

If someone bought me a scratch card and I won £50k I would give them maybe £5k as I think it would be a decent thing to do. But I wouldn’t be sharing with anyone else in the group!

BeMellowAquaSquid · 21/12/2025 16:51

We have rules anything over £50 is split

XenoBitch · 21/12/2025 16:49

YABVU and entitled. The card (and winnings) was not yours the second you gifted it to someone else.
Well done to him though. I hope he enjoys spending it.

XWKD · 21/12/2025 16:48

Do you not give a gift for the benefit of the recipient?

DisappointedD · 21/12/2025 16:48

DecemberGoneWild · 21/12/2025 15:20

Should have had rules. Ours is that anything under £99 the individual keeps
Anything over £100 is shared equally

Personally, I'd share because it's not worth the bad feeling bit if he isn't going to then I'm not sure you can do anything but accept it

Yes we have this rule too. Never had to put it into practice though!
