To be annoyed about the guy who took his top off in a roomful of women?

I belong to a community choir and we had our Christmas concert recently. There was a room set aside for us to put our bags and coats in. It was a small room and jam packed after the concert with people collecting their bags.

The make up of the choir is predominantly middle aged and older women with a small number of men.

After the concert finished, we all went to the room to retrieve our bags. When I walked in, one of the men was standing in the corner with his top off and he didn't seem to be in a rush to put one back on. No one else was getting changed.

AIIBU to think it was out of order for him to do that? I feel I want to report him as I'm just sick of men doing shit like this. I've had more than my fair share of poor treatment of every kind over the years and I'm absolutely sick of it. If he wanted to get changed he should have gone to the toilet. I felt very uncomfortable. I didn't feel he was any kind of threat but just WHY? No one was impressed.

AIBU to report him to the choir leader?

Maybe they were in a round room and he was told to stand in the corner?

That’ll be it! 🤦‍♀️

@TrippingOverMyAssets that was uncalled for. Hope you feel better now.

It was funny, though.

cobrakaieaglefang · 21/12/2025 07:44

My daughter played in an orchestra, ok, 20 years ago, they got changed together, girls would go to one side. Nobody batted an eyelid.
I play a sport, both sexes. Often if loos are busy, one or 2, male or female will quickly change in the corner. Particularly if they are heading off to work after training. Not about power play but practicality and knowing each other really well.

@gannetthe didn't just take his top off and put another one back on. He stood topless for a while doing nothing in a small, packed room full of women!

If he then put a different top on then he was just changing his top. He doesn't have to do it at your preferred tempo.

SouthernNights59 · 21/12/2025 07:43

You are being ridiculous. A man taking his top off is hardly 'low level shitty behaviour'. I've heard it all now. No-one I know would turn a hair, we are quite used to seeing men with no tops on where I live.

Do you complain about topless men at beaches?

What a stupid comparison. People are scantily clad on beaches and at swimming pools. Standing half naked in a room full of fully dressed people is unnecessary. If he were just changing his top, a quick old top off / new top on was all that was necessary. Anything more is just exhibitionism. I wouldn’t be offended but I would think ‘what an absolute dick’.

I get you, OP. It's cringey and subtly boundary pushing. Discreetly changing his top on a corner of the room would probably have been fine, but standing around topless for ages is weird - I bet he wouldn't have done it in an all-male choir.
Comparing it to the beach or to a changing room environment is disingenuous IMO - it's about context. Toplessness (male or female) is socially acceptable on the beach or in a single-sex changing room, but in the supermarket or on the school run (or in a room full of women after choir practice) it's weird and performative, especially in December.
I wouldn't complain, but I'd roll my eyes and lose a bit of respect for him.

Of course he would e done it in an all male choir, have you been in a men’s changing room after a football or rugby match? They’re not concerned with nakedness.

GooseyGandalf · 21/12/2025 07:42

I hear you @naturenaturenature

Don’t complain, because you’ll sound ridiculous, but I know exactly what you’re talking about. Men like this know what they’re doing, and just hover under the radar in terms of their behaviour but it’s low level boundary testing.

If you complain, you’ll end up being seen as a pearl clutcher or something. And that gives these men more power. You’ve seen him, and you’re vigilant. Do you think he’s more than an annoyance?

You could call him out on the spot but sometimes men like this thrive on a bit of mockery so you can be unwittingly colluding in their grubbiness.

Do women not get hot? Do they have some kind of internal fan?

Oh course they do, but we all know the difference between a topless man and a topless woman.

Well I agree with you entirely OP, I’d be uncomfortable and annoyed. He should have done whatever any of the women would have had to do had they needed to be fully topless ie bugger off and do it where no one can see you. My choir is women only and it’s genuinely blissful.

Hundslappadrifa · 21/12/2025 07:35

I’m sorry but you really are being ridiculous. He was hot after the show, he took his top off to cool down. In a corner of a changing room! How do you get through life? This is a non problem.

How is the corner of the room also the middle of the room? I used to be in a choir, it was quite common for changing together to happen, everyone had underwear on so you can’t see anything that you wouldn’t see at a swimming pool.

As I said previously OP is
the story!

@GnomeDePlumethats my point! So sick of men trying to assert their male dominance in this way. He stood their for ages, right in the middle of a tightly packed room.

i don't think it's treating me badly. What I don't like is why felt the need to take his top off. He's always hugging the women and I felt his intention was that he wanted us to look at him.

Probably. Men are weird like this.

Taking the puss or being light hearted!

Come on!

*piss

naturenaturenature · 21/12/2025 07:35

I have no problem getting reasonable responses from people who don't agree with me and I expect that. However I'm getting responses that are taking the piss out of me. No need for that.

In your OP, you said he was in the corner. Now you've posted he was in the middle of the room.

Im not sure how you feel it's dominance but I'm sure you'll have some elaborate way of twisting that too.

You sound rather unpleasant trying to twist a bare chested man into a dominating monster.

Happy to see topless men at beaches though... very bizarre

Ahhh yes. Let's make a thread for people's opinions and when somebody doesn't agree, we'll have a strop about it.

Exactly this!! If you’re looking for things to be offended about, find something real before posting in AIBU.

@DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHatSo why weren't any women do the same. Come on! These are mostly middle aged menopausal women !

In this situation I wouldn't have been bothered about a woman changing her top either, assuming a bra underneath (which a lot of women are happy to do).

@DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHatSo why weren't any women do the same. Come on! These are mostly middle aged menopausal women !

Because there are different social norms. However at the gym I do see women in what would appear to be just a sports bra & I’ve yet to see a topless man. Maybe there is just different scenarios to when it accepted. I think a man changing his top isn’t odd to do in front of people after a concert & he’s wearing something he that’s more of a uniform. I wouldn’t complain if a lady did it either id be impressed with her confidence because that’s all that holds us back on doing such things. I change in a cubicle of a female dressing room if I can not for decency but because I wouldn’t expose anyone to the horror of my body if I can help it
