Not to have known his true age before sleeping together?

He’s bloody 18! Not 19 until April

Casual conversation and flirting lead to hotel room and sex.

Really mortified to discover he is actually 18. No, he didn’t actually tell me. I assumed he was about 21. I am 28.

I feel so, so awful. Really panicked when I found out the morning after. He doesn’t seem bothered and thinks it’s all fine. Grinning like a Cheshire ca

Good lord, I haven’t scarred him for life, have I? Please someone assure me I’m not sick in the head

I would be furious if I was his mum!

You weren't to know. And it's not illegal anyway. Even if you had asked him, he might have lied.
Nothing to worry about. You did nothing wrong.

If the guy were just a year younger it would be a very different story. A lot of man have ended up in prison because the girl looked older and lied about her age.

Dollymylove · 21/12/2025 11:40

In the world of Mumsnet its against the law to date/sleep with/ marry anyone who is 6 months older or younger than yourself
🤣🤣🥰

Oh give over. 🙄 I'm blaming the WOMAN here because she is the one who was 40! The lad was 18. Sometimes women are in the wrong you know!

She was lying about her age, (said she was a few years younger,) and shagging a lad young enough to be her son. A lad of 18! The poster I quoted tried to blame them both, (as she said she was younger and he said he was older,) but the 40 year old WOMAN is the one who should have been more intelligent and mature, and not gone with someone who was young enough to be her son. He said he was 21, but was actually 18 or something.

He was 18, did he look 35? NO, he would have looked 'around 20' or younger!

Even if she thought he was 21, why the hell was she shagging a 21 year old anyway, when she was 40?

Men do it all the time, have sexual relations, with ‘Women’ who are 20+ years younger than them, the actual post, is about a 28 year old woman, having a one night stand with someone she thought was older than 18, who happened to be almost 19!
This thread, is ridiculous, if it was about a 28 year old man and an 18 year old woman, there wouldn’t be this reaction.I do wonder, how many men, are commenting here!

Could sleep with someone in year 11 at school if they were 16 and there would be nothing illegal about it, as long as the adult wasn’t in a position of trust/authority

Illegal and acceptable are two different things.

You'll find millions of abusers and exoloiters use the not Illegal defence.

A sixth former at 28- yuk!

CandyCaneKisses · 21/12/2025 11:28

He will be buzzing to tell him mates. I’d be so beyond embarrassed.

Mumstheword1983 · 21/12/2025 11:28

I married a 28 year old when I was 19. We had been together two years. I don't remember anyone having an issue. It didn't last (obviously!) but no one including my family were disgusted by it so why would it be so different if the roles were reversed here?

OP don't beat yourself up 😃

Blinkinblinis · 21/12/2025 11:27

It’s no biggie - he is above the age of consent and you were presumably both pretty keen. It’s rubbish that you can always tell the age. My two boys looked at least mid twenties by 18. Both played rugby and were big and strong with decent facial hair since year 9. Add in the fact that they were quite adult in their manners and were very articulate and confident - the overall effect was that they were years older. One got together at 19 with a woman who was 28 and while both were initially embarrassed the relationship lasted quite a while and was happy enough. He felt he couldn’t date his peers as they looked too young plus he was a bit boring and sensible and liked a nice walk and a farm shop lunch rather than nights out. They suited each other pretty well. Prior to this he endlessly attracted women in their late twenties and mid thirties who mostly were horrified when they found his age.

Orwellwasright2020 · 21/12/2025 11:21

Ew. Just move on and choose men who look mid 20s at least for casual fucking to avoid future teenage shags.

Surprised you didn't guess by how crap he was tbh.

Needmorelego · 21/12/2025 11:21

KimberleyClark · 21/12/2025 10:54

But still technically not an adult.

Yes but if it was consensual then it's legal.
My comment was in response to someone who said "be careful he could have been 17".
17 or 18 wouldn't make any difference in the eyes of the law (unless she was he teacher/boss or similar).

Notmyreality · 21/12/2025 11:19

Edenmum2 · 21/12/2025 11:05

Well it depends on the man doesn’t it? They don’t all look and age in exactly the same way

Indeed. What a stupid comment.

Notmyreality · 21/12/2025 11:18

Busyasabumblebee · 21/12/2025 10:12

I always look for proof of age of every man I sleep with. ‘No documentation, no shag’ is a policy that might seem excessive but it works. I recommend it

Who said romance is dead…

BillieWiper · 21/12/2025 11:18

Well if it was a woman and she was happy about the encounter then I'd say just politely decline if they want to see you again. So it's the same if it was a bloke.

The person is an adult. They looked a bit older. You had a consensual ONS. Nobody died. These things happen.

But maybe do actually ask people's age if you're attracted to people who could be a fair bit younger than you. As obviously you didn't set out to sleep with a teenager.

Needmorelego · 21/12/2025 11:17

sunshinestar1986 · 21/12/2025 10:36

When I was in college I saw 16 year olds that looked like 12 year olds and 16 year olds that looked like they were in their 20s
Not everyone's the same.

Yes but I meant legally.....

TheTecknician · 21/12/2025 11:14

Two consenting adults going at it with mutual consent and a minor error of age uncovered after the event. No big deal here. I'd say he's a lucky bugger and I hope it was good for our OP too.

Biskieboo · 21/12/2025 11:13

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/12/2025 11:01

Umm, not my thing as I tend to like older men (Mr Monkey is 9 years older than me) but what exactly is wrong with a 28 year old finding a 21 year old attractive? They are both adults in their 20s. Do the same (mad) rules apply to a 30 year old and a 23 year old?

Some people on here are so strange about sex.

Edited

There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. In the real world anyway. It is only amongst a certain cohort of MNers where all 21 year old men are apparently indistinguishable from Jimmy Krankie and thus horribly unattractive. It is very strange.

Zov · 21/12/2025 11:11

UneAnneeSansLumiere · 21/12/2025 11:10

I agree. When I was 27, I did a course at University for a year, and was surrounded by people in their late teens. One boy in particular took a fancy to me. He was 19 and I (gently!) turned him down flat. Even if I'd been tempted, I wouldn't have slept with him, but I wasn't tempted. There is nothing about a teenager that was attractive to me.

This. ^ I find it inexplicable that anyione over 27-28 wants to be with a teenager.

UneAnneeSansLumiere · 21/12/2025 11:10

Blades2 · 21/12/2025 10:39

Grim.

At 28 I wouldn’t have looked at a 19 year old let alone slept with him.

Ick ick ick.

Oh dear, let’s just blame the woman shall we🙄
My point was, they are both adults and they both lied

Lockingthegins · 20/12/2025 22:12

Yes I did. But now I feel so much remorse and shame

Why? I honestly don't see the big deal. He seemed to have enjoyed it, everything was consensual, so what's the issue?

Edenmum2 · 21/12/2025 11:05

TrishM80 · 20/12/2025 22:39

18 year old boys very much much look like boys. There's a big difference between an 18 year old boy and a 21 year old man, there can be no mistaking it.

Well it depends on the man doesn’t it? They don’t all look and age in exactly the same way

summitfever · 21/12/2025 11:05

@x2boyssorry you quoted @Zov, whom is who I was replying to, my mistake 😄

notacooldad · 21/12/2025 11:04

But presumably the mums on here wouldn’t be happy with a 28 year old man wanting to date their 18 year old daughter? As long as it’s a ONS it’s fine?

Pretty much, For one thing I didn't tell my mum who I was shagging when I was a young adult decades ago.None of her buisness.

Rosscameasdoody · 21/12/2025 11:03

Aluna · 21/12/2025 10:30

The issue is that OP didn’t ask his age. (And also why on earth she’d want to sleep with someone that young in the first place). She might be 18 she might be 15…

I was answering the previous posters’ comment about the situation in reverse. Which is why l qualified the statement - ‘if they were both adults and it was consensual’.

HoppingPavlova · 21/12/2025 10:53

WTF is wrong with you? You found what you thought to be a 21yo guy attractive? Were you completely affected by alcohol? If so, maybe don’t drink in future?

Whats wrong with a 28 year old and 21 year old?
