I just wish people would stop sending me Christmas cards

They're pointless, wasteful and a poor form of communication. All I do is read the "Happy Christmas from Joe and Julie" and walk them to the recycling.

I haven't sent any for over 25 years and I just don't see the need for them at all.

Paper can be recycled

Yes Of course I am aware of that but why waste resources to produce it initially. Recycling does not counteract that

But multiply that by tens of millions

Yabu. I love Christmas cards, why aren't you putting them up as decorations? They make the house look festive. I like to hear from people at Christmas.

IME They make my house look messy, nice if you like hearing from people though

Thedogscollar · 20/12/2025 17:53

Bah Humbug

I understand preferring not to receive them but not the strength of feeling you have. So not everything is your thing - just accept with grace put it in the bin if you must. Waste wise - it's just a few cards. I'm sure if most of us reviewed our waste for the year (be that financial or physical), Christmas cards would feature very low.

But multiply that by tens of millions

iCod · 20/12/2025 17:48

No @Sesma I think they don't, and that's the issue, isn't it?
When I decided to stop doing them, I wondered if I would fall out of touch with people but I never did. I work hard at friendships- seeing people, phoning them looking after them, et cetera.

I have a feeling you will have a disturbed night's sleep on Christmas eve...

Why? Are you popping over with a bag of cards?

OP posts:
Sesma · 20/12/2025 17:47

Do people really text and speak to these people that they would have sent cards to, I don't

iCod · 20/12/2025 17:47

Anyone is grateful for a card like that needs to have a word with themselves. Most texts are longer than one of those.

OP posts:
iCod · 20/12/2025 17:46

People saying that they're nice they're just not nice. It's a piece of paper with one sentence written on it.

I restarted sending cards this year, I'm always happy to receive one but was to lazy to return the thought.

Well aren’t you just the Christmas joy fairy?

I haven’t sent any for years because of the faff and expense, but I am still very glad to get them from anyone who still chooses to send them.

Why are you not sending joy?

PuppyMonkey · 20/12/2025 17:43

You’ve just reminded me I’ve got a couple in my bag from work colleagues who I sit beside in the office every day but insist I need a card from them.

PashaMinaMio · 20/12/2025 17:35

I love to receive a card but I don’t send cards, I stopped that years ago.

I always text a thank you and tell the sender I’ve used card and stamp money to donate to charity.

This year it’s Refuge, for women fleeing domestic violence. Too many women lose their lives behind closed doors every year that we never hear about.
https://donate.refuge.org.uk/page/179334/donate/1?ea.tracking.id=GEN_PAID_GPPC_DON&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23054284514&gbraid=0AAAAACMybazeugY9MIjniZGJ6SiAK2TOl&gclid=Cj0KCQiAr5nKBhCpARIsACa_NiMjam06nopCCcp5gUoo2oiqcgGhCNwqzv5z7yIeUT2J4VpE-6lAkcQaAr_FEALw_wcB

I also ask them to keep me on their list, if they’d like to. They all do and I get lots of cards.

“I’m annoyed people think of me and spend time to do something nice for me”.

If people thought about me, they'd know that I don't like clutter or random stuff. They'd remember that I don't like unnecessary spending, when there's so much poverty about and I do what I can for the environment. If they want to do something nice, a funny meme or Gif will do, or we could actually phone each other, or even more radical, visit/meet up etc.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 20/12/2025 17:25

I am another one who doesn't send Christmas cards... mainly because, if you are special enough to feature in my personal life, I'll say 'Merry Christmas'/'Nadolig Llawen' to you (or at least, send a message). The only person that I send letters to- since I moved away- is my extremely deaf grandmother, who has trouble with hearing what I've said (both in person and over the phone), so if I write to her, she understands perfectly.

I'd rather not receive cards, but certain people still do, like an elderly neighbour, my grandmother and my mother. I don't have a mantelpiece, and have shutters instead of curtains, so window-sills are also a no-no! If I stuck them on a wall, I'm sure that one of my dogs would have an entertaining time trying to get them down...

I love them and use them as decorations. Being on someones Christmascard list is an honour. I swear mumsnet moans if things aren't christmassy enough but wants all the traditions thrown in the bin.

I love Xmas, just not cards. We all have preferences and that’s ok.

LibertyLily · 20/12/2025 17:19

I agree @Pancakeflipper some cards are so beautiful - we always try to choose something a bit different to show the recipients we've given it thought. So, when DS was a chorister, we hunted out cards with choirs etc on (predictable, I know!). These days we like to find designs with Pre-raphaelite type imagery as that's our thing, although DH appreciates a vintage style card so I seek those out for him 😄

clary · 20/12/2025 17:18

Oh I agree @iCod but you will get your arse handed to you.

Chr cards to me date from a time when it was much harder to be in touch. The onyl way was to write, and even when I was young, you had to go to the trouble of a phone call, and the person might not be in. So Chr cards made sense as a way of staying in touch.

But now - texting, messaging, SM, email, a load of ways to chat to someone and wish them well. I've not sent any for about five years and it is so liberating. Yes agree with @redskydelight

Please don't send me a pointless piece of cardboard with "love Julie and Ben" on. No you are not thinking of me - I am just on some list you have. Please just paypal me the money – if you are sending first class that's at least £2 with the card.

And every year people post on here saying "I get a card that's for people who moved out 10 uears ago" or "I can't remember my cousin's husbands name, what shall I write in the card?" Surely that shows that the people in question are hardly close friends. If I don't know someone's name then I don't think I need to bother sending them Christmas greetings.

I love Christmas btw so I am not bah humbug about it at all. I love the prep – shopping, wrapping, Christmas tunes on the radio, carol service, Christmas band concert. I love choosing gifts for my family and wrapping them; I love the tree and the fairylights; I love buying some different food and cooking a lovely meal; most of all I love spending some time together, playing games, watching TV, chatting, with nowhere to go and nothing to do.

Sesma · 20/12/2025 17:16

The independent card shop in our town closed about 3 years ago, only one that has customers now is Card Factory which often look busy

Pancakeflipper · 20/12/2025 17:10

I like a Christmas card. I like cards. I like happy post.

I am very particular on what I buy.

I hang them up in the hall and it looks cheery.

Totally respect those who think it is pointless. But I think about the card designers/printing companies, my local independent card shop that sells lovely cards and gifts... it will be a shame when it's gone.

LibertyLily · 20/12/2025 17:09

CandyCaneKisses · 20/12/2025 16:56

I have to say I find this miserable and ungrateful. Be glad people think about you.

This ^

We still send and receive Christmas cards - although the numbers have gradually dropped to around 15 - but moved to a new area last year where many of the neighbours give them, so our numbers have now actually increased into the twenties again! Although around 20 years ago, I remember sending/receiving 50+ and my parents used to send/receive 70-80 back in the day!

Over the years we've moved about a lot (our last house was in rural Wales - we didn't receive any from our 2/3 neighbours during our six Christmases there) and the eight cards we've had from our new neighbours here in West Sussex is the most we've ever had from people that aren't family/close friends/work colleagues.

Not only is it lovely to feel welcome, but the cards are brightening up our building site of a home lol!

MaryBeardsShoes · 20/12/2025 17:07

What is with the professional misery on MN this year.

Fearfulsaints · 20/12/2025 17:07

I dont mind recieving cards. They are jolly enough.

I dont care enough to send them to people though. Only for 4 elderly relatives who really care. I write a personal message in them.
