I just wish people would stop sending me Christmas cards

They're pointless, wasteful and a poor form of communication. All I do is read the "Happy Christmas from Joe and Julie" and walk them to the recycling.

I haven't sent any for over 25 years and I just don't see the need for them at all.

@cardibach im going with 100%

It’ll be 99.something. Some people do write some news. Very, very few though. And a bet a similarly small number were written with joy and love rather than gritted teeth…

redskydelight · 20/12/2025 18:10

I do agree that it's weird as fuck to send Christmas cards to people you haven't seen/spoken to/had anything to do with for 10+ years though. WTF is that about?!

Yes! I admit my views on Christmas cards are definitely shaped by observing that my parents sent (and received) Christmas cards to people they hadn't seen in years (10 would have been quite recent) as a proxy for "being in touch" . If you want to be in touch with them, you need to do more than send them a card every year!

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 18:09

@Roobarbtwo okay that sounds like a nice gesture, the card is useful to contain and disguise cash I agree, I hope you have a lovely Christmas

Keeponshining · 20/12/2025 18:08

iCod · 20/12/2025 18:06

I love you @Roobarbtwo
I think sending Christmas cards to your family is a bit working class. Especially if "dear mum at Christmas"

Oh god. I actually thought you had a point until you described something as ‘a bit working class’

Roobarbtwo · 20/12/2025 18:08

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 18:03

Well three is a very insignificant amount I agree, multiply that by tens of millions however 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't have a tree - plastic or otherwise. I don't buy lots of food at Christmas and waste any - I get a takeaway. I'm quite happy to buy three cards over the space of a year

Sometimes I put a gift in the card - money or a gift card

Sesma · 20/12/2025 18:07

redskydelight · 20/12/2025 17:57

Why would you send a card to someone you don't text or speak to?

Either the person is important enough to you that you will keep in touch, or they are not that important, in which case sending why are you sending them a card once a year?

These are relative that just got sent cards each year, I spoke to them if I saw them in between obviously but I wouldn't text them at Christmas particularly. I have never sent cards to anyone other than relatives or texted them at Christmas

Keeponshining · 20/12/2025 18:07

I have no issue with people choosing to send cards. If it makes them happy then so be it. I keep them for a short while before recycling them.

What I do take issue with is the inevitable threads every year full of people moaning they a sent card but didn’t receive one back and how it’s the height of rudeness and unreasonableness. Between 2 kids and a job where I have been lucky to have 3 days off over Xmas, writing a return card (or in fact any card, beyond to my 90 year old nan who I don’t see very often and is deaf so can’t chat on the phone) to some random neighbour or an acquaintance is just not going to happen.

cardibach · 20/12/2025 18:06

bridgetreilly · 20/12/2025 17:35

Well aren’t you just the Christmas joy fairy?

I haven’t sent any for years because of the faff and expense, but I am still very glad to get them from anyone who still chooses to send them.

I love Christmas. Can’t stand cards. They don’t bring me joy. It’s entirely possible to be full of joy and Christmassy spirit and still wish cards didn’t exist.

Getting them for family you're seeing EVEN ODDER

Is that right. Maybe I'm just aware that if a family member sends me a card I'll give them one back. Although it might please you to know a few times when I've been a tad disorganised I HAVENT BOUGHT ONE

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 18:04

The same way people produce birthday or any other kind of cards. People buy soft plastic on a regular basis and there aren't always facilities to recycle that. I try and recycle as much waste as possible - but I'm not going to beat myself up for buying three Christmas cards once a year

Zov · 20/12/2025 18:03

I love them! I (and DH) send about 40-45 between us - neighbours, relatives, and work colleagues (and 5 good friends between us...) We get about the same back. Got 38 so far.

We are quite old though. 😆Our DC are 30-ish and only send about 7 out. Get about the same back.

20 years back, we used to get about 80-90. I'm not kidding. Colleagues, family, neighbours, hobby groups, and friends of our 2 DC... Again, we did probably send about that many out between us.

iCod · 20/12/2025 18:03

@cardibachit is quite funny from one mate though
but she did put flowers in a cathedral when Diana died so we often giggle about that 😆

I like them, it’s a good way to keep in touch and share news.

99% of cards don’t have any news in them.

Our kids have continently timed birthdays so people get two thank you cards, a Christmas card and maybe even a Christmas present in one package. Only send about 5 that are just a card and they are family fronds of parent’s generation. I think we’re more on under 15, was 40-50 teen years ago. They are dying.

Roobarbtwo · 20/12/2025 17:59

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 17:55

Yes Of course I am aware of that but why waste resources to produce it initially. Recycling does not counteract that

“I’m annoyed people think of me and spend time to do something nice for me”.

It’s not nice if they know she doesn’t want them though.

PurpleThistle7 · 20/12/2025 17:58

I love sending and receiving them. Am sure you will eventually get none - it’s definitely coming to an end of the tradition

cardibach · 20/12/2025 17:58

Bombinia · 20/12/2025 15:05

Yabu. I love Christmas cards, why aren't you putting them up as decorations? They make the house look festive. I like to hear from people at Christmas.

I like to hear from people all the time. Doesn’t mean I want a card. And no, I don’t think they look festive. They fall over all the time and I don’t have anywhere to put them anyway.
I haven’t sent any for over a decade. Some people just keep sending them.

redskydelight · 20/12/2025 17:57

Sesma · 20/12/2025 17:47

Do people really text and speak to these people that they would have sent cards to, I don't

Why would you send a card to someone you don't text or speak to?

Roobarbtwo · 20/12/2025 17:57

iCod · 20/12/2025 17:47

Anyone is grateful for a card like that needs to have a word with themselves. Most texts are longer than one of those.

I don't need to have a word with myself. I only send three cards - and the ones that send me them I send back.

People can enjoy receiving cards for lots of reasons - if they are housebound (which I was last year) and for many other reasons

I actually went to get my mum and brother a Christmas card - a specific kind from a shop in my home town. Sold out

Your opinion is completely fine - for you. But I don't need to have a word with myself because I send and receive a very small number of cards

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 17:56

@iCod totally with you. Waste of space, time, money and resources and totally pointless and a money spinner for some
