I just wish people would stop sending me Christmas cards

They're pointless, wasteful and a poor form of communication. All I do is read the "Happy Christmas from Joe and Julie" and walk them to the recycling.

I haven't sent any for over 25 years and I just don't see the need for them at all.

I’m the opposite - I love Christmas cards and am quite disappointed I’ve only received 2 this year. Both of them were from elderly relatives, so I do think it’s a tradition that is disappearing.

gogomomo2 · 20/12/2025 17:05

I sent 3, dh sent 7, we currently have 8 sat here. I’ve stopped sending to friends my age completely

Sesma · 20/12/2025 17:04

Most of our family are dead now so that knocked a lot off for both sending and receiving

OhMaria2 · 20/12/2025 17:04

I love them and use them as decorations. Being on someones Christmascard list is an honour. I swear mumsnet moans if things aren't christmassy enough but wants all the traditions thrown in the bin.

I have to say I find this miserable and ungrateful. Be glad people think about you.

People who think about me, text, call and/or visit us to see how we and we do the same. Writing a card in the way most people do which is ‘To You Happy Xmas From Us’ doesn’t mean anyone is really thinking of you, not in any meaningful way anyway. I remember my mum rushing to write over 100 cards, moaning her way through it, hardly an act of love and thoughtfulness. 😅

Sesma · 20/12/2025 17:02

Why is it wife work, DH and I do each side ourselves, I wouldn't do anything for his family and friends and he wouldn't mine, we never have.

ScrambledEggs12 · 20/12/2025 16:59

Due to the price of stamps I tend to take people off the Christmas card list if I don't receive one back for two years running.

I do feel sad each year though as I come to remove those who have died in the year.

I love receiving the ones we still get and make a nice display.

Well at least no one has mentioned giving to charity instead, that's usually said on these threads

I keep all my money for me….mwahahaha.

I have a feeling you will have a disturbed night's sleep on Christmas eve...

Minty25 · 20/12/2025 16:53

I like them if they are good quality nice ones as I love looking at them. Flimsy and cheap no thanks !

BackToBeingACatSlave · 20/12/2025 16:51

My partner puts them in the recycling without even opening them. We’ve told people we don’t want them so I think that’s fair. We don’t send any which doesn’t suit a few people but 🤷🏻‍♀️

Homepizza · 20/12/2025 16:44

I like them, it’s a good way to keep in touch and share news.

MyThreeWords · 20/12/2025 16:37

SO, so glad to read a number of anti-Christmas card threads this year. And one from @iCod no less!! An influencer if ever there was one!

Christmas cards have had their day. They ONLY exist to induce guilt and/or enable you to demonstrate your efficiency at busywork and wifework.

Oh, and to help us all fuck over the environment.

Please let's drop them altogether and cut off just one of the tangle of tasks that make Christmas a chore rather than a pleasure.

GlobalTravellerbutespeciallyBognor · 20/12/2025 16:34

Elderly people love getting them so please keep sending to them. Send beginning Dec as well. Honestly it might be a chore but it will cheer their day.

40s, 50s generation not so bothered.

The next generation probably won’t contemplate sending any at all.

I am terrible - I don't bother to even open the very few I now get.

There might be a tenner in there

Sesma · 20/12/2025 16:32

DH and I have always written our own, I have never written his.

I understand preferring not to receive them but not the strength of feeling you have. So not everything is your thing - just accept with grace put it in the bin if you must. Waste wise - it's just a few cards. I'm sure if most of us reviewed our waste for the year (be that financial or physical), Christmas cards would feature very low.

YABU. Writing a post on munsnet rather than telling people - stop sending me cards....

SwedishEdith · 20/12/2025 16:14

I've only done mine for my family and friends and partner does his for his. Get fewer each year though and down to a steady core that will reduce as we die 😄 I like cards though.

Mangomammy · 20/12/2025 15:12

“I’m annoyed people think of me and spend time to do something nice for me”.

A perusal of threads on MN will reveal that most people write Christmas cards very quickly without a huge amount of thought. There's even been posts from people saying to buy cards in the sales and write them after Christmas.

Sending Christmas cards with a generic "Happy Christmas from Sarah and Paul" type message does not particularly mean that someone is thinking of you.
And it certainly doesn't mean it any more than them sending a text/email/message, which is a more sustainable alternative.

iCod · 20/12/2025 16:10

I gave up because I suddenly realised it was wife work and if women didn't do them men certainly wouldn't
