"First post nails it."

Really wish this smug and overused comment would be banned.

(I realise it's entirely predictable what will happen at the beginning of this thread...😄)

It’s almost as common as ‘first poster nails it’

would be a pretty boring site if no one was here to judge!

That's true!

About seventeen people have already made this point and I've answered it about seventeen times.

You don't actually realise it's just someone's personal opinion?

I agree that it’s annoying and it also sets the tone of the thread. People parrot the first few comments and this leads to a ridiculous amount of bullying on lots of threads where the poster has come to seek advice only to be piled on.

Now we have giraffes AND parrots.

But thinking you have the ultimate authority to declare what is right and what's wrong does.

You don't actually realise it's just someone's personal opinion?

So Tedious isn’t it?

and then there are the people who start criticising mumsnet for being contrary….does no one realise it’s different people, not a council of the same 12 people?

Yes! The “I hope these aren’t the same posters who commented on that other thread three months ago with a different opinion…”

There are only about 8 million users so probably not😂

thegrinchwasontosomething · 20/12/2025 16:59

OriginalUsername2 · 20/12/2025 02:22

I hate “Well this is Mumsnet so everyone is going to say (blah blah blah) but I think..” (insert apparently superior opinion)

It’s so stupid, like you are on Mumsnet right now, you are one of us 😩

And show me a thread where everyone agrees with each other.

I've just noticed that I wrote ‘bed’ instead of ‘tread’. Predictive text once again! 🤣

If you'd written that the bed turns into a pile-on that would be a very different matter!

Yes, I think you're right.

LizzieW1969 · 20/12/2025 15:51

It's certainly the case that the first post often sets the tone for the rest of the bed. If it's a definite YABU, the thread can very quickly turn into a pile-on.

Yes, I think you're right.

Agreeing = smug 🤔

Well, I learn new things every day.

I've said several times it's not the agreeing I see as smug.

Would you prefer it if PPs said, ‘first post nails it IMO’? So it's clear it's an opinion rather than a fact?

Whereas in reality don’t always specify that it’s their opinion although it obviously is. It can’t be anything else, surely?

Yeah, a PP said something very similar earlier which I answered at 14:50.

It's true I tend to read it as someone thinking they're stating a fact, whereas I should probably see it as just another opinion.

But you started a thread about banning something you don’t like - who made you the authority to decide that?

No-one. I simply said I wished it would be banned.

If it helps, it's irritating if I think the first post was a pile of nonsense..

😄

I've seen a lot of "As usual first post nails it!"
comments. It does sound a tiny bit like, end the thread no one else's opinion matters.
There are a lot of comments that get repetitive and a bit irritating if you are on MN a lot.
I always hate Reader I.......
Urgh, it's been done to death.

OilyRoundTheCogs · 20/12/2025 15:37

"First post nails it" is usually true though.

Far less irritating than pages and pages of posts all saying exactly the same thing with no idea that 250 other people have said it before you.

5128gap · 20/12/2025 15:36

Incelebration · 20/12/2025 15:07

True. Perhaps IABU in thinking the statement "First post nails it" doesn't sound like an opinion. To me it sounds more of a statement, and rather blunt, but my interpretation doesn't "prove" that is how it is intended.

Incelebration · 20/12/2025 15:09

Some interesting food for thought. I'm happy with (currently) over 40% of people thinking IANBU, but willing to concede that people see the expression as just another way of expressing their opinion and it's not intended to be smug.

We all think our opinion is correct. Otherwise it wouldn't be our opinion. You might prefer the softener of 'in my opinion the first post is correct...' but the meaning remains the same. The person still thinks their opinion is right. As do we all if we're sufficiently moved to offer it.

I love the “First post nails it.” comment.

However, I do wish people would actually quote the first post when they say it, because by the time I’ve reached the message that says “First post nails it” I will have long forgotten what the first post actually said.
