or am I being dramatic?

Please be honest if im overreacting. Me and my boyfriend have been together officially for 6 weeks, it's going really well. Yesterday we went out for dinner and I drove us back to mine after. On the way back, he rolled down the window and threw his empty drink can out of my car. As soon as he rolled down the window i knew that was what he was going to and asked / begged him not to as I'm the one who's car it is and I don't want someone posting my car all over the local facebook group saying rubbish is being thrown out of it.

Also it gave me the ick. I find it a bit grim that he couldn't wait 10 mins till we got to my house to throw his rubbish away.

OP posts:

Trust your gut. Men who do these casual, shitty acts are rarely good ones.

Apparentlyitschristmas · 19/12/2025 20:30

He’s shown you who he is - I’m sorry OP but this is not a tiny thing - get rid

Dita73 · 19/12/2025 20:27

He’s a disrespectful wanker

Lunchtimehelp · 19/12/2025 20:25

I couldn't be with someone with no respect to the planet.

ForeverHopeful3 · 19/12/2025 20:24

Yeah I would be done with him. 6 weeks is nothing and he's shown you he is an imbecile. I am so over men though so take this with a grain of salt lol

Mama2many73 · 19/12/2025 20:22

I reported a royal mail driver for doing the same in our street. Threw a can into a horses field as he drove past.
Told his bosses the van reg, a detailed description of the driver and the exact time. He was given a warning of unacceptable behaviour.
There's NO way I'd accept it from my car, and as a pp said id have stopped the car if it was safe to do so!

Strawberry53 · 19/12/2025 20:22

Absolutely not cool and would massively give me the ick. Who does he think he is?! And who does he think is gonna pick that up?! I can’t stand when people just drop rubbish like that. Would be a dealbreaker for me honestly.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 19/12/2025 20:21

Sadly, it isn't uncommon for small creatures to get trapped in discarded cans, bottles etc and die because they are unable to get out again. They are attracted by the smell or food or drink and slide in, only to find the surface is too slippery to climb back out. It must be terrifying for them.

I would dump this moron without a second thought.

otherlineeyes · 19/12/2025 20:21

It’s not tiny

VaderX · 19/12/2025 20:19

I would have stopped the car; told him to get out there and then; and driven off.

At least he would have learned a lesson!

No morals whatsoever!

JJWT · 19/12/2025 20:16

I'm so annoyed by this behaviour. The number of times we've had to wrestle discarded bottles, cans etc from our dog's mouth!! Cans can cut them. Wild animals are attracted by the smell/sugar. What a tramp. Doesn't seem to have any awareness of how he comes across to you or does but isn't bothered. Throw this one back.

SixSevenX · 19/12/2025 20:10

It’s a sign of what’s to come!!
(if you stay together)

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 19/12/2025 20:09

You asked him not to do it, but he ignored you and carried on.

Biggest red flag ever.

figud · 19/12/2025 20:06

I’d typically lean to maybe forgiving one mistake BUT I dated a guy who left the fast food wrappers on the table when the etiquette is always to take tray to the bin and dispose - even after my objections he wouldn’t. Overlooked it, and he turned out to be a controlling dickhead. Run.

Nearly50omg · 19/12/2025 17:11

I’d have stopped the car and told him to get out and pick that can up and then driven off when he got out and left him 🤬

Me too

Imdunfer · 19/12/2025 20:03

I would have stopped the car, got out and picked up the can, asked him to get out of the car and driven home alone.

Delphiniumandlupins · 19/12/2025 20:02

It does sound OTT but I feel not littering is a very basic standard. You can have different religious or political viewpoints on some things and still maintain a friendship or relationship but this is too far.

RoamingToaster · 19/12/2025 20:01

I find quite often people on MN are bothered by things that I don’t care about but this would bother me. I think it says a lot about a person. They don’t care about the environment and others.

ImALargeAbsentMindedSpirit · 19/12/2025 20:01

I would have pulled over for him to get out and get the can (as long as it wasn’t dual carriageway/motorway. I hate people that drop litter.

HisNotHes · 19/12/2025 19:58
  1. Littering (and even worse out of a car window)
  2. ignoring your request not to do that

Both a massive ick and a complete dealbreaker. I would not be seeing him again.

MagpieCastle · 19/12/2025 19:55

Yep, in a single action he's managed to show you exactly who he is. Someone who has no regard for the environment, community responsibility or for listening to your opinion.
It's a pain and he's a knob but at least you don't have to waste any more time on this person. The ick will only get ickier.

Happyjoe · 19/12/2025 19:55

Another no from me. That's horrible, esp as you asked him not to. No respect for you, or the planet.

MissFancyDay · 19/12/2025 19:54

I would have instantly gone off him.

MySilentLions · 19/12/2025 19:51

Nearly50omg · 19/12/2025 17:11

I’d have stopped the car and told him to get out and pick that can up and then driven off when he got out and left him 🤬

Love this!

Cherrysoup · 19/12/2025 19:49

Nearly50omg · 19/12/2025 17:11

I’d have stopped the car and told him to get out and pick that can up and then driven off when he got out and left him 🤬

Same. I’m appalled that a) he littered does he know how long it takes to break down an aluminium tin?!) and b) he disregarded your request not to throw his rubbish out of the car. I don’t understand why people can’t wait til they get home to put something in the bin/recycling. I’m a fiend for ensuring the kids at school put items in the right bin.
