To end 1 month relationship over this tiny thing

or am I being dramatic?

Please be honest if im overreacting. Me and my boyfriend have been together officially for 6 weeks, it's going really well. Yesterday we went out for dinner and I drove us back to mine after. On the way back, he rolled down the window and threw his empty drink can out of my car. As soon as he rolled down the window i knew that was what he was going to and asked / begged him not to as I'm the one who's car it is and I don't want someone posting my car all over the local facebook group saying rubbish is being thrown out of it.

Also it gave me the ick. I find it a bit grim that he couldn't wait 10 mins till we got to my house to throw his rubbish away.

Very much not a tiny thing,

Tamtim · 20/12/2025 05:53

I can’t stand seeing people litter. Just hold onto your rubbish until you get to a bin. That would have put me right off a man. I wouldn’t look at him the same.

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 05:43

I bet he spits on the pavement too

Orwellwasright2020 · 19/12/2025 22:56

Throwing it out is weird and a bit feral. Ignoring you "begging" him not to is an absolute "Fuck off out of my life forever" moment.

GooseberryGreen · 19/12/2025 22:56

In the early days in a relationship people are showing you their best side. This is his best behaviour and it's squalid. Its not even as if he didnt know you found it offensive as he just paid no attention to your request that he not throw litter from your car. Imagine in a few years when he's "comfortable" and what sort of things he'll likely be doing. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a criminal record. If you are planning children one day, would you want your children to have his genetic inheritance? I certainly wouldn't. Incidentally, unless he was raised by wolves his damily are probably just like him. Get out now and save yourself a great deal of misery.

It’s the total disregard and selfishness. How unattractive

1 can does not a shithole make. Seems incredibly minor to end a decent relationship over in this dating climate.

He has no doubt been doing it all his life and will do it the rest of his life. Whilst spawning kids that do the same as he is their role model. So no not one isolated case.

Talullahspolkadotbikin · 19/12/2025 22:39

Back into the sea he goes…disrespected the planet and you.

mummytrex · 19/12/2025 22:05

Dump. It's disrespectful to you and the general public. It says a lot about his mindset/values and the type of person he is. I suspect he usually lives in filth - I say usually as he might have made an effort to be tidy while he reels you in.

Then we get to him ignoring you. Again disrespectful and rude. If he respected you he would have stopped.

NET145 · 19/12/2025 21:42

Twat

laurini · 19/12/2025 21:40

Vile. YANBU.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 19/12/2025 21:38

He’s shown a complete lack of respect on 2 levels. Get rid of him before it gets worse.

Thepossibility · 19/12/2025 21:33

That's not a tiny thing, he's showing you who he is. Once while out driving, my DH and I saw someone who lived not too far from us dump a bunch of take away rubbish out of their car window. DH stopped the car and I collected it, we followed to gross idiot home and I deposited the rubbish back into his open car window. That's compatibility as a couple IMO.

Fiftyandme · 19/12/2025 21:28

Not unreasonable at all

GoodQueenWenceslaus · 19/12/2025 21:23

What did he say when you begged him not to throw the can?

Mumofmarauders · 19/12/2025 21:23

That’s a huge thing! He's an inconsiderate selfish child or he’d never dream of doing this. Come on OP, surely you couldn’t live with this long term?

Snugglemonkey · 19/12/2025 21:22

This is not tiny. Run!!!!!!

Winter2020 · 19/12/2025 21:22

Get rid. Sometimes actions speak louder than words and you will never be on the same page as someone that chooses to behave this way.

Terrytheweasel · 19/12/2025 21:20

in the bin with his coffee cup

Wowwhataworld · 19/12/2025 21:16

Nah I’d have pulled over and made him get it and if he didn’t told hit to get to. Still probably would have broke up with him it’s just really off putting behaviour.

Clangershome · 19/12/2025 21:05

Awful. Shop him in for a littering fine.

ThatBlackCat · 19/12/2025 21:02

You're not overreacting. Ignored what you said and littered. That is a major turnoff and I'd let him know. Only 6 weeks? The universe is giving you a message, and really early. Get rid. Because he won't stop, and there will be more things if he is so lazy and careless and doesn't respect the environment.

MyChristmasCheerHasBuggeredOff · 19/12/2025 20:49

Oh no. Thats a big no no...

What did he actually say when you asked him not to? He just did it anyway?

shuggles · 19/12/2025 20:48

@bicyclecrash When I clicked the thread, I was ready to roll my eyes at something silly and trivial, and was surprised to find a completely legitimate reason for ending a relationship.

The best judgement of a man's character is how he treats those who can do nothing for him (in this case, the environment). He disregards the environment, so he likely also disregards wildlife, and he probably disregards you as well.

Please note also that you explcitly asked him not to do it, and he did it anyway. This is not reasonable behaviour and it is cause for concern.

Why did you select this person to begin with?

Newyearawaits · 19/12/2025 20:40

bicyclecrash · 19/12/2025 17:14

What gets me is that he didn't even need to throw the rubbish immediately. It seemed like he just done it for the thrill of it. No morals

Have you spoken to him about how you feel?
