Just been told to remove my pronouns from my Teams profile

I'm weak 🤣
My manager just phoned me to say there has been some serious complaints made about me that he must urgently address.
I panicked.
In the Pronouns section of my Teams profile, I have

'Take a Wild Guess'

Its been there for a few years. Its finally been noticed and I've been told to take it down because it's made someone or more than one possibly, FEARFUL of me.

I would put he/him to annoy them all(they have requested and you don't need to give any further information). The whole thing is ridiculous. I think if you have pronouns which are different to your sex then definitely you would need to tell people that is how you would like to be addressed but otherwise it is all a bit mad.

Horrace · 18/12/2025 13:29

I haven't said how it came to light

You haven't. Probably for good reason.

You did say: "The reason it was noticed is a whole other story which also got me in trouble"

It’s harder to tell with teens for sure, but adults have such different doors I’m surprised people have any trouble at all!

Ah that's where I've been going wrong, I've been paying no attention to people's doors at all 😂

louderthan · 18/12/2025 13:33

A colleague of mine has Ho/Hum as his pronouns on teams. Makes me laugh every time I see it.
When I was on Twitter my pronouns in my bio were she/her/Satan.

I’m hiding this thread because you’re so scary. I’m shaking and crying, thanks.

Sobbing, even.

She's ridiculing the idea of pronouns, not a specific person. It's fine to ridicule ideas, although probably best not to do so in your professional profile, I admit.

Incorrect. OP says specifically she is ridiculing those that prefer to share their pronouns- not an idea.

All of this discussion about single sex spaces etc is irrelevant.

The long and short of it is that OPs behaviour has been unprofessional at work and she's been pulled up on it. And apparently, according to OPs posts, not just for the mocking pronouns themselves, but also for the way that they came to light.

It doesn't matter how right you are, you still have to be professional and courteous in the workplace. You can't goad, insult, mock others, be deliberately antagonistic. The trans / pronouns angle is irrelevant.

I haven't said how it came to light

MsFogi · 18/12/2025 13:28

OP I think it is imperative that you take this request very seriously and immediately reassure your boss that you would hate for anyone to be fearful of you not least because you take pronouns extremely seriously. You will therefore immediately update your pronouns (you assume they cannot be depriving you of pronouns altogether because that would be literal violence) so that they are clear for all rather than anyone having to guess them - you had assumed that it was obvious to all that your pronouns are ze/zem hence your little joke but you’ll get them on your profile loud and proud pronto and assume that everyone will respect them.

Saying take a wild guess is now considered harassment?
Wow

It’s what’s implied.

If Janet from accounting had pink hair and you set your status on Teams to ‘only blondes have fun’ and people amongst the office knew it was about your dislike of Janet’s hair - it would constitute as bullying and / or harassment. For a supposedly non issue, “bit of banter”.

I can only speak for my own experience up until my late teens when I grew my hair and started looking less 'tomboyish' but I was misgendered frequently enough then.

And It's not that uncommon that I will see someone and not be sure of their sex and/or gender. Which is partly driven by people who are trans or non-binary, but not exclusively. Maybe I'm peculiarly unobservant but when I see people on MN say "oh but we can always tell" - well personally, on first glance, no I can't.

I can guarantee they would not think you were male after seeing and speaking to you. Men's and women's bodies are very different; short hair and a masculine name do not make a man. My butch friends have never had this problem. They occasionally get called sir until they turn around and all becomes clear.

Thankfully it’s a choice where I work. Lots of people do and I don’t. I already work in a heavily male environment. I already have had to deal with toxic male behaviour over the years. It does feel I work in an environment finally that respects me regardless of whether I’m a she.

But I wouldn’t ridicule people choices- we do have a lovely new starter and I’m guessing they are a they - they haven’t stated so just refer to them by name safer that way - they doing a cracking job and that’s all that actually matters.

You work in a sexist industry where you recognise the disadvantaged by being seen as female. Your industry ranks roles based on males and then female not by capacity to do the job you are being paid to do.

Your employer decided that you should brand yourself as having a "feminine thought process/ outlook" in work or opt out to be "inclusive" where your employer knows or should know that this act directly disadvantages you and all other female employees.

Do you think that your new starter if female will be treated better if she pretends she is not female (or not to have a "feminine thought process")?

Or will there be a new way of spliting and ranking by sex eg males, males who claim to females, females who claim to be male, and females?

xAwaywiththefairiesx · 18/12/2025 13:24

Fearful is ridiculous. People are such wet cabbages.

But you didn't really need to put that in your signature, did you? It wasn't necessary.

Mine is blank. I am clearly a woman. I'm happy to leave it at that.

Men saying they’re women is mocking women in many of our opinions. But of course that never counts as mocking.

superbakedpotato · 18/12/2025 13:22

Your personal beliefs don't entitle you to act childishly and unprofessionally at work. I think Nigel Farage is a steaming turd of a human but I don't add that to my email signature. And laughing in your bosses face can't have gone down well either, hope you're not too attached to your job if that's how you choose to behave.

The pronouns section is there for whoever feels they want to use it. If you don't want to, then don't. It's pretty simple.

It made them “fearful”? God help us all if we end up going to war. People really have become weak and need to get a grip.

Possibly, though I reckon it could be exaggerated language to get attention, or that the OP portrays an image of being difficult which contributes.

Notice how overused 'devastated' is, for example.

@Helleofabore off topic but so glad to see that a professor at UCL is so openly being a sex realist.

Gives me a tiny bit of hope.

When you think of what is going on at KCL down the road though, ....

I know what you mean.

Prof Sullivan has been a welcome and clear voice.

@whittingtonmum

I am ridiculing those that feel the need to tell us their 'preferred ' pronouns

If I were you I would carefully read your employers bullying and harassment policy and reflect on how much I'd fancy the risk of being taken through a disciplinary or grievance procedure.

If the answer is not very much I would adjust my attitude and behaviour at work accordingly (suggest that laughing in the meeting with your manager wasn't the best move you could have made if you wanted to avoid risk).

Of course if you don't care that much about your current employment, future references etc just behave how you see fit. It wouldn't be considered good professional judgement in many workplaces.

I think this can be interpreted as ridiculing those who share their preferred pronouns at work. I would not call this is professional behaviour or think it's acceptable in the workplace. If I were your manager I would have asked you to take this down before complaints come in. You don't have to share your preferred pronouns if you don't wish to do so but 'take a wild guess' is not appropriate in the workplace. No doubt transphopbic mumsnetters will disagree but wonder how many of them work professionally in environments where diversity and inclusion are regarded as part of a professional business environment.

If men are allowed to use she/her pronouns and vice versa, which is utterly ridiculous, then you’re going to get equally as ridiculous comebacks sometimes. Biological reality isn’t transphobia. And if people think it is, whatever. They need help. Bringing dangerous ideology into the workplace is hardly professional now is it.
