Listed something for sale. Get a message saying it is available and what are dimensions. No hello? No please? Such basics.
Edited to add: the dimensions are already in the for sale advert.

I was a Woolworth's Saturday girl and this is what we were trained to do.

The shop keepers in my little local shops - greengrocer, butcher, baker still say please and thank you.

i was a Boots Saturday girl and we were too. I loved working there, it was a coveted job back in those days

LeonMccogh · 17/12/2025 15:02

The flip side of the people who push past others in shops etc are the ones walk sooooo slowly and dither and block aisles with trollies etc.
They are just as rude!

BauhausOfEliott · 17/12/2025 14:53

I'd say please/thank you if it were me. I just naturally do it, without even thinking.

But equally, I really couldn't give a shit if someone who's just buying a jumper off me on Vinted doesn't bother with those sorts of pleasantries. If someone says 'Hi hun, lovely jumper, could you just possibly let me know if it's true to size for a 12 or is it more like an oversized fit? Thanks so much xx' that's fine, but the response isn't any less of an effort for me than it would be if they just said 'is it a true 12 or oversized' and it doesn't bother me at all.

GinaandGin · 17/12/2025 14:48

I would respond with a screen shot of the ad with the dimensions circled in red

They arent there to be mates with you are they. its called business.

All more reason to be polite otherwise if it were my friends I'd be saying "yo dickhead".

glendabrownlow · 17/12/2025 14:14

I agree that 'please' and 'thank you' is basic courtesy and society is better for it. Just to add, I have sold a lot on Vinted this year and I would say that around 80% of people I was in contact with were polite and friendly. It makes such a difference. I did the same as a PP said with the rude ones, I just ignored them.

I agree op. It is very easy to say please and thank you. I must live somewhere very odd in the fact that cashier here say please and thank you and also chitchat if they can.

I started serving customers in our family "corner shop" as a young teenager. Saying hello, please, thank you and bye, was basic manners and certainly nothing that someone needs to be trained for! You shouldn't need "training" to say thank you to the shop assistant when they give you your change and receipt any more than the assistant should need training to say "please" when they ask for the amount due after ringing through the till. The World has gone mad when people seem to think they need "training" for basic manners! It's what parents and teachers are there for!

I have literally just said about cashiers not saying please and you have assumed I have awful manners.

I say please and thank you when appropriate. I also say sorry far too much, like I am apologising for my own existence.

A cashier not saying please when they say how much your shopping is, is not being rude. How would they even say it? "Please can you give me £23.50 for your items?" They are not asking for the money... they are stating how much it is and are waiting for you to pay. I have never heard a cashier say please and I am pretty certain if it was a thing then it would be part of their customer service training, and you would hear it all the time.

Sorry, but I'm laughing at the idea of cashiers having 'customer service training', We get half an hour with a till operative when we first start, everything else is picked up along the way - there is no 'customer service training.' There is very little training AT ALL.

(I always said please and thank you, by the way, but I'm old).

Narrow country lane, just little me walking in one direction and three lads walking towards me spread out, none of them moved to one side for me. I wouldn’t move into the ditch for them!
I just don’t understand. I will always tuck behind a walking partner if someone is coming the other way on a narrow path, and am always happy to step into the kerbside for the more vulnerable. I’m sure fewer people do that now.

Same with walkers/ramblers on our canal towpath. They come 2/3 abreast and expect everyone else to jump out of the way. I used to but don't anymore and now just stand my ground and they always look shocked that they have to fall into single file. Bad manners and arrogance isn't the preserve of the young nor male. Older/elderly women are just as entitled, especially in groups!

Manners maketh the man,as my old mum used to say.

I have friends who always say please and thank you to the Alexa thingy!

Love a well mannered chap/chapess.

Nail on the head. Nothing wrong with simple pleasantries and they don't take up any time at all. It "oils" your social interactions with other humans.

Badbadbunny · 17/12/2025 14:01

Dragonscaledaisy · 17/12/2025 13:51

Funnily enough, that's exactly how I see it when I choose to ignore the rude, entitled individual and give whatever I have on offer to someone else. 😂

I agree. I walk with my feet when it comes to shops and other service providers who can't be bothered with even the faintest of manners. Likewise, as a seller on Facebook, Ebay and others, I either ignore or sent blunt replies when a potential buyer has no manners or asks stupid questions.

I'm too old to tolerate it anymore.

Same with my business. I'm 100% pleasant, helpful and polite to my clients, hence not losing a client for several years and most clients staying as clients for 10-15 years and over. But when I get an email/contact form from a potential client and there is no sign of manners, I don't engage and don't take them on. I have enough work and don't have the mindspace to deal with difficult, arrogant or ill mannered people.

Died during COVID time

Long before that. Covid just made it worse.

PistachioTiramisu · 17/12/2025 13:44

I completely agree with you OP - it doesn't take a minute to say 'please' and 'thank you' People's manners are sadly lacking these days - just look at the horrific 'can I get' in a cafe or pub! What happened to 'please may I have' or 'could I please have'??

FallingIntoAutumn · 17/12/2025 13:42

I agree and I agree it went with Covid. People don’t see people as other humans anymore.
people used to smile and say thanks in a shop if you let them go. Now they just ignore you, maybe just walk at you until you move.

XenoBitch · 17/12/2025 13:42

Namechangerage · 17/12/2025 00:14

There is an alternative! If there is a group taking up the whole pavement, I just stop dead. I don’t move, I don’t barge. I don’t say anything. I look bored. Then they usually just step around me with a confused look 🤣

I think I might try that. Thanks for the tip Smile

What a bizarre comment. Do you not say please and thank you when making a transaction of some kind?

I have two anxiety disorders, including severe social anxiety, and autism but I don't use it as an excuse to be rude.

Neither do I. I am never rude to shop staff. Never.

TroysMammy · 17/12/2025 08:47

I see questions from customers on a Facebook business page eg "do you have steak in stock". It's so rude especially since the lovely busy business owner who we all know the name of replies quite quickly. What's wrong with "Hi (name) do you have any steak in stock please?"

Moretwirlsandswirls · 17/12/2025 08:43

Apart from the fact it feels good to be polite, basic manners get you further in life. I’m a teacher and I always pull pupils up on please and thank you. I teach teenagers. I also notice manners in others, very much. If you want your kids to get on in life, good manners make a big difference.

Goditsmemargaret · 17/12/2025 08:42

I agree and people are even worse when it's free. I remember receiving follow up messages two minutes apart "Dimensions... ???... Hello??? "

I say please and thank you to my hens when I ask them to move out of the way when I collect the eggs. I think if it's bred into you, you can't not do it.
