Liverpool attacker sentenced

Paul Doyle, the Liverpool parade attacker, has been sentenced to twenty one years and six months in prison for his attack that injured 134 people.

That’s 258 months, or less than two months per person injured. He’ll be out in half, so 129 months served. Less than one month per person. Reading the victim impact statements was awful. One from a little boy, who is completely traumatised, stuck with me.

AIBU to think this is a farce?!

He had multiple character references from many parts of his life to say that wasn't the case at all. Don't be blaming his wife fgs!

Obviously on this day day his temper was a big problem, but there's absolutely nothing to suggest it had been for the previous 30 years.

I'm afraid you haven't looked at the full details of this case. It emerged in court that he has a long history of violence as a young man, including biting the ear off a sailor in a drunken brawl and punching another man in the face in an unrelated incident. This was no one off incident, this was an example of male rage and violence and yet again innocent people have paid the price.

So many people on here saying it’s a harsh sentence.

“He’s ruined his life”

Look at bbc. Painting him as the nice neighbour, a man with two sides.

Rubbish. Calm down and stop van banging. You're as angry and reactionary as the defendant.

Dawnb19 · 16/12/2025 20:41

I hope he serves the full 21 years but I doubt it. We're too soft. I was actually expecting him to get off if I'm honest but I think he's lawyers will appeal it in a few years and he'll get it reduced. I hope not though but they will.

According to some newspaper articles he has PTSD and was discharged from the royal marines due to it. With all the people kicking and hitting the car beforehand he just put he's foot down. Again I hope they don't appeal but I can't see him doing the full 21 years.

Sesma · 16/12/2025 20:41

It seemed appropriate for the crime

LimpysGotCancer · 16/12/2025 20:41

He’ll be 68 by the time he gets out. Just young enough to enjoy a nice long retirement. It’s disgusting.

I think lots of people have absolutely no idea what it's like to be in prison, particularly for a long stretch.

15-20 years. Imagine that - I mean properly try to imagine it. Locked up, no liberty, the sheer endless boredom with no end in sight, away from family and friends, constantly on edge, fear of violence, the noise, never any peace. It is a very harsh punishment. As he deserves.

I'd love to see the some of the "holiday camp" brigade serve a few months and see what it's like. They get TV and PlayStations so it would be easy, right?

InlandTaipan · 16/12/2025 20:40

ireallycantbelievethis · 16/12/2025 19:25

In that had he attacked an affluent area of London I doubt the news would be running stories about him being the “nice neighbour” and a man with “two sides”

That's very naive. There's a reason that "Nice bloke. Quiet. Kept himself to himself" is a trope.

SwedishEdith · 16/12/2025 20:40

I thought it was a heavy sentence. Ironic that it was a crime committed through pure rage and the OP is frothing about the sentence.

This about his Twitter account shows something predictable as well.

I am all for harsh sentences and think all murderers should serve life etc, but in this case I think it’s a good one. I was worried he’d get a lot less

sittingonabeach · 16/12/2025 20:39

Papers have to be careful what they report before the outcome of a trial, so previous convictions won’t normally be mentioned until after the trial

nocoolnamesleft · 16/12/2025 20:39

dynamiccactus · 16/12/2025 20:30

Yes there was a shocking case where a drunk driver killed two teenagers on a pedestrian crossing (they had a green man) and he only got 6 years!

Horrific.

Pollqueen · 16/12/2025 20:38

Daytimetellyqueen · 16/12/2025 18:53

Why did he do it? I still don’t understand!

Another angry man who can't control his temper

mumofoneAloneandwell · 16/12/2025 20:36

Pedallleur · 16/12/2025 20:34

No. Why should it? He didn't get lost and stop, he drove deeper into the crowd raging at them. Had he driven over people he wouldn't have known or seemingly cared.

I dont think it should be, dont get me wrong

NormasArse · 16/12/2025 20:35

ireallycantbelievethis · 16/12/2025 19:13

So his mates (probably also violent too) defended him.

I wonder if the response would be this way if he had attacked an affluent area of London, as opposed to Liverpool.

Now you’re reacting with rage.

These people weren’t ‘mates’, and you’re accusing them of lying.

Pedallleur · 16/12/2025 20:34

mumofoneAloneandwell · 16/12/2025 20:03

Do we think his sentence will be reduced on appeal?

No. Why should it? He didn't get lost and stop, he drove deeper into the crowd raging at them. Had he driven over people he wouldn't have known or seemingly cared.

Mrsblobby88 · 16/12/2025 20:34

Calm down OP. You have asked if you are being unreasonable and are then going bananas when posters are telling you that you are! You are by the way. Child sex offenders get less time than that!

ireallycantbelievethis · 16/12/2025 19:32

And in what, thirty years, she never thought to speak out?

You're really trying to put blame on his wife here??

HonoriaBulstrode · 16/12/2025 20:30

The BBC are pushing that he’s the “nice neighbour” and he had “two sides”

The BBC aren't 'pushing' anything. They are reporting on the story. His previous history, good and bad, is relevant in trying to understand what happened.

The BBC reported all the victim impact statements.

do we know how he ended up in the parade of an opposing team ?

He was going to pick up some friends who had been attending the parade, having dropped them there earlier. This was all in the BBC's live reporting over the last two days.

nocoolnamesleft · 16/12/2025 19:44

Sentence is much more appropriate than I thought it would be, given eg what short sentences drunk drivers who kill get. Though he should be banned from driving for life.

BlackCatFanClub · 16/12/2025 20:29

There was a podcast episode of The Trial talking to Prof David Wilson about his thoughts on why he did it which is interesting.
I can’t remember the name of the condition he mentioned but it was all about anger and the need for control.

Ebok1990 · 16/12/2025 20:29

DappledOliveGroves · 16/12/2025 20:15

What I’m puzzled about is why he was so angry before he even got close to the crowds. The footage of him shows him running a red light on a dual carriageway, driving aggressively, and this was a few miles before the parade route. It seems he was raging as soon as he got in the car. Obviously his rage got worse (and he deliberately drove into people), but what made him be in such a foul mood to begin with?

We can only speculate. He may constantly be on a hairs trigger, with aggression and violence lying just beneath the surface.

Falling asleep at the wheel isn’t an intentional act.

He'd spent the night gaming though.

dynamiccactus · 16/12/2025 20:28

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 16/12/2025 20:21

@gillefc82 of course she's not tarring all fans at all she's just pointing out there can be an intense rivalry. Not the cause but perhaps a factor.

The rivalry between Liverpudlians and Evertonians is nothing like that. People support different teams in the same family - they're hardly going to want to kill each other. It is massively offensive (and the police discounted that anyway).

ireallycantbelievethis · 16/12/2025 20:27

TheNightingalesStarling · 16/12/2025 20:25

The man who killed 10 people and injured 82 others when he fell asleep at the wheel and drove onto a train line only got 5 years.

So the sentence seems more than adequate really.

No sentence is going to take away the trauma from that day.

Actually that was the case I was thinking of - Gary Hart. If he'd fallen asleep and hit a tree, he wouldn't have ended up in court. I thought in that case they were relieved that they could blame him and not the railway infrastructure as there were so many accidents around that time.

Pricelessadvice · 16/12/2025 20:26

I listen to a podcast about crime/murder in the UK and a shocking number of violent murderers have got out without 12 years.
I thought his sentence was quite high actually. Rightly so, but I was just shocked given how lenient courts can be over other crimes.
