Liverpool attacker sentenced

Paul Doyle, the Liverpool parade attacker, has been sentenced to twenty one years and six months in prison for his attack that injured 134 people.

That’s 258 months, or less than two months per person injured. He’ll be out in half, so 129 months served. Less than one month per person. Reading the victim impact statements was awful. One from a little boy, who is completely traumatised, stuck with me.

AIBU to think this is a farce?!

Why assume he will automatically come out after two thirds of his sentence? He will have to satisfy a parole board that he is not dangerous, which means showing that he has his temper100% under control. Unless he undergoes very effective therapy he may find that very difficult in prison conditions.

sittingonabeach · 16/12/2025 23:20

@BeardofHagrid luckily one member of the crowd managed to access the inside of the car to stop it. He risked getting run over to do that

At first when I read about the altercation on Dale Street I did wonder if crowd issues had wound him up or scared ( not that would be an excuse but might be a context). However the court evidence is clear, he was the sole agressor on Dale Street, then chose not to follow the two routes for cars, and deliberately went down water Street, a pedestrian route. Crucially he seems solely responsible

No shit, Sherlock.

I care very little about his family, who will have looked past his clear anger issues for years. I care a lot more about the innocent men, women and children who were at the parade and who have been traumatised for life. Why aren’t you more angry about yet another act of male violence being excused and played down?

Can you also channel that anger toward the puny sentences for rapists please - while you’re at it. The victims relive their ordeal for the rest of their lives. Someone invading their body and trying to degrade them. Please save some of your anger for these type of offenders who sometimes get a bare slap on the wrist - if that.

The crowd was full of violent people who smashed his back windows and were kicking lumps out of his car. No wonder he snapped.

I know of a woman who drowned her child in the bath, she got four years. Huw Edwards got nothing for his horrific crimes! The judges just make up whatever they feel like.

That has been completely disproven in court from his own dashcam footage.

The crowd were smashing his windows etc AFTER he'd already driven into people in an attempt to stop him. Which again was proven in court.

wineosaurusrex · 16/12/2025 23:15

Even if his wife had noticed his rage issues, what was she meant to do? Go to the police (who barely bother to turn up to reports of actual crimes these days), and insist that they should intervene because her husband hadn't done anything but might at some point?!

Or get him mental health support to learn to manage his rage issues? Obviously the UK is a country with a crumbling health system and almost zero adequate mental health support available for the majority of the population. Perhaps if he had been able to access MH support he could have been able to learn to deal with rage episodes. So many crimes recently committed by people who are in absolutely desperate need to the MH support and intervention that is basically impossible to access in the UK.

There is NO justification whatsoever for you to blame his wife or family. Women are never responsible for the violence of men. HTH.

I’ve read enough to know this vile, evil man attacked one of the largest cities in the UK and a lot of people seem to think it was perfectly okay

Name one person who thinks what he did was perfectly okay.

Have you bothered to watch the footage? He was running red lights and driving very erratically before he was anywhere near the crowd.

The Bbc footage is completely horrific. At one point he slows down then carries on and drives into the crowd. My god. Can you imagine how terrifying it was for people caught up in it

Absolutely, my lovely neighbour is a student and was working in a bar on the same road, the first she knew of it was the screaming coming from outside.
She ran out and was convinced she was witnessing a terrorist attack, she said there were people scattered all over the floor. The poor buggers who were actually involved will probably be traumatised for years to come. The fact that this seems to just have been all down to uncontrolled rage is just mindboggling.

The judges are obliged to follow the Sentencing Guidelines, which are freely accessible online, if you can be bothered to search for them

wineosaurusrex · 16/12/2025 23:05

It's gross that you're saying this man is basically a violent psychopath and that his family MUST have known, and then also blaming them for his crime. How could they psychically have known he was going to commit this crime and go to the police in advance?! You're being absolutely ridiculous and melodramatic. If he is as evil as you keep insisting then his family were probably terrified of him and his biggest victims!

You're being weirdly aggressive to posters on this thread.

I think the sentence is is adequate.

sittingonabeach · 16/12/2025 23:05

It is a wonder people weren't killed

FiredFromACannon · 16/12/2025 23:02

It sounds like he was in an uncontrollable rage, and he had form for having a short temper and violent outbursts. Perhaps he’d been able to keep it under control fo a long time but if that’s the way you’re wired you probably can’t keep it under control forever. I think the sentence is about right.

As an aside I once got stuck in my car on a road outside a football stadium just as the fans started coming out, the road was suddenly filled with people banging on the car and shouting, it was terrifying, I shut the engine off and waited for them to all pass. It sounds like he was already in a rage an couldn’t control himself.

I barely know where to start but just to be absolutely clear, judges do not just make up whatever they feel like.

They absolutely don't

Roobarbtwo · 16/12/2025 23:01

lightlily · 16/12/2025 22:57

I thought the sentence was reasonable. No time will be enough for the family.

I have a close family member who was involved in a similar thing (group of people driven into where no one died but serious injuries/long lasting psychological trauma) and the driver got 5 years. No sentence would have been enough but I recognise that there are sentencing guidelines in place and we need a structure around proportionate sentencing.

Your anger/distain towards the wife and kids is misplaced but is relatable for me. I couldn’t stand hearing about how devastated the driver’s family were. They were negatively impacted of course, and must have been sad, but they weren’t the true victims of it.

No they weren't but there have been posts on here suggesting the wife is responsible

CheesecakeOnTheLanai · 16/12/2025 22:57

You are a complete and utter disgrace. He was driving erratically and dangerously long before he reached the city centre. People only began banging on his car when they realised he had no intention of stopping - at one point he slammed into reverse and crashed into an ambulance.
I am astonished that anyone could defend this behaviour, he is a violent thug who is very lucky he didn't kill someone.

I feel as though a part of the jigsaw is missing. I think he deserves his sentence but what was really going on with him, nobody knows. I don’t think it’s just road rage, and nothing underneath that. It doesn’t make sense, does it.

No it doesn't. It makes no sense why he would snap like that. As soon as he was arrested he said I've ruined mine and other peoples lives so he knew what he had done

Ebok1990 · 16/12/2025 22:54

ireallycantbelievethis · 16/12/2025 22:11

My ex was charged with GBH with intent and false imprisonment, both can carry life sentences but he got 10 years in total. He only injured me though, Paul Doyle injured over 100 people so I do think he got off lightly with 21 years.

It was said that only some crimes were brought before the jury due to the sheer number of people he injured

If someone hadn't jumped into the back of his car and stopped the car he would have injured more people. Go watch the footage where he's screaming move move fucking move at people and then drives his car into another group of people and then get back to me

HonoriaBulstrode · 16/12/2025 22:52

I didn't realise he was already showing rage and erratic behaviour before he got to the parade. So probably he didn't find himself stuck there by accident and panicking as a result.

He'd already driven into the city once that day, to drop off his friends who were going the parade. So it didn't come as a surprise to him. And anyway, anyone who lives in Liverpool must know what to expect if Liverpool FC were having a parade.

And presumably if there had been any issues on the first trip, the police carrying out the investigation would have found evidence of it. (And the friends would have made some excuse not to have a lift back from him.)
