Just for fun.

What are some things that you have done in the past or do now that you know most MN’s would find you unreasonable for?

I’ll go first:

  • I’m so unbothered if you choose to have a child free wedding and my children aren’t invited. Even close family weddings. It’s your day I’m not going to kick up a fuss that you haven’t invited to my children. You’ve probably given me at least 6 months to a year notice, I’ll just arrange childcare. If I can’t - then I can’t come and you can’t be mad at me!
  • Chose to have 2 elective c sections for no medical need.
  • Given my children chocolate occasionally before the age of 2.
  • Son slept in a cot until almost 3!

I’ve never said I’ve found my crew/ posse on a post
i let my cats eat off of my plates
my husband doesn’t compete in a secret hobby that I can’t mention as it’s seriously outing
I have a loo brush
i tumble dry everything
I’ll change my sheets when I can be arsed but was my towels after every use

Dontlletmedownbruce · 16/12/2025 18:15

My kids always bathed twice a week, hair once a week.

Biskieboo · 16/12/2025 18:15

I'll sometimes have a drink even if it's just me and the kids in the house. I'm perfectly happy pooing elsewhere than in my own home, and especially at work. I hardly ever lock my doors. I very often just let everyday annoyances and minor impositions slide, preferring to give people the benefit of the doubt. So long as somebody is competent I don't give a flying fuck about them being 'professional'.

I used the now defunct laughing emoji to take the piss out of people making stupid comments on MN. Before it got banned, that is. Blush

It’s your fault it’s gone 🤦🏻‍♀️ 😂

I mean we are all grown ups can’t believe people got so butt hurt over someone laugh emoji them.

Did everyone miss the ‘piles of presents’ thread?! Buying your children lots of presents at Christmas is peak MN. Anything less than a mountain of gifts - which they may even lose interest in unwrapping before they get to the end - is “joyless”.

It seems to me like there's two camps

  • the competitive overbuyers who buy mountains of gifts. Tend to be very concerned about the magic of Christmas and do jolly and festive things like threatening violence against children who might clue in their 12 year old that the Santa story isn't completely accurate.
  • the competitive underbuyers who like to show the first lot how superior they are and demonstrate their sustainability credentials by hanging up a paper chain their Aunt made at Primary School in 1964 and is still perfectly good, reusing wrapping paper and buying each child only one small hand carved, locally made wooden item and a second hand book. Very angry about Christmas Eve boxes, elf breakfasts and the like.

Of course, the vast majority of Mumsnetters do what everyone else does and buys their children as much of what they want as they can comfortably afford provided it isn't likely to cause death or serious injury and can be fitted into the house without building an extension, and even most of the people professing to be in the above mentioned camps are exaggerating for effect.

I don’t own my own home.

I occasionally enjoy a modest amount of cannabis.

I see quite the opposite, anything more than a “thoughtful” gift and a satsuma is viewed as profligate and your child will grow up to be an ungrateful ratbag.

You’re not imagining it, it’s definitely far more common to pool finances and have ‘one pot’ on MN. I think because most women are on / have had / plan to have extended maternity leave of up to 1 year, or work part-time around the kids, and so benefit from pooling finances.

There is no benefit to a woman who earns equally or more than her husband of doing this, and is actually ill-advised where differing attitudes to money/spending are involved. Nothing chips away at a marriage more than arguments about money.

I think you're right.

I earn more than DH and mortgage, nursery fees etc are all 50/50 but anything left over is ours and another unpopular MN thing is believing if he wants more 'fun money' after all bills are paid, he can earn it like I do.

Of all the controversial topics that have arisen on this thread, I did NOT think it would be toilet brushes that derailed it. Peak Mumsnet.

RanyaJerodung · 16/12/2025 17:57

KittyFinlay · 16/12/2025 17:55

Yes I know that but it's still got yucky stuff on it, even if it's sat in bleach. No judgement at all to those who use them, I don't think about how other people clean their toilets, but I feel nauseous at the idea of having one in my bathroom.

Fine. Folks are different! Some of the toilet brush threads have got a bit insane on here !
I have been seriously slagged off for my toilet brush usage 😂😂😂

PoliteSquid · 16/12/2025 17:57

DH and I have shared all our money since we first lived together.

I don’t stress about my pension or investments.

I love buying my kids loads at Christmas- even now they’re older teens.

loo brushes obviously- we have one next to each loo!! Ditto washing bedding/towels. 😬🤣

Bleaching a toilet brush sounds like a palaver that wouldn’t work for me. If it works for you that’s great.

Bleach in the toilet, flush, scrub with a cloth, throw it away. Wash hands.

No miserable toilet brush sitting there in a puddle in a sad little holder. Plus I don’t have to mess about buying toilet brushes. I’m not saying you have to do it that way, so why are you telling me I’m wrong and I should use a brush?

A little acceptance that not everyone does things the same way would be lovely. Edit to add that I see you have - so Thank You.

Read my posts.
I never said that you were wrong.
I never criticised you.
I was curious about your method.
I have made it very clear that folks do things in different ways and that's perfectly fine.

Right, so a social worker can give you money for a spa day? Not being goady, genuine question.

Yes, there are ring fenced funds for carers that are intended to be spent on helping them sustain their caring role. So spa days, afternoon tea, theatre trips, getting a cleaner to do a deep clean, or pay a gardener are all fair game. It’s not meant to be spent on household costs.

I feel like joint finances are normal on MN? Maybe it just feels that way because we have separate finances and if it comes up on a thread, I'm always told that I have a room mate, not a DH or I'm clearly doing marriage wrong.

The disposable clip on ones for me, I just find the idea of a brush sitting there covered in whatever you last cleaned out of the toilet really icky.

You bleach it after use.

I have always left my children in the car when paying for fuel at a petrol station. Pay at pump has only just arrived in the last few years where I am, but there was no way I was lugging a car seat in one hand and tucking a feral toddler under the other arm, whilst I went over to pay. (caveat - neither of mine could undo their seat belts or escape from the car at this point).

My sole nod to safety was to leave the car unlocked, so that if something did happen they could be grabbed and removed quickly plus the car alarm would go off if you locked the car and left them in there and that was really embarrassing.
