To be concerned about a war?

Woke up this morning opened my SM and first posts I see are about a basically inevitably pending war with Russia. It’s the first I’ve heard of it. Sir Richard Knighton said the threat needs to be taken seriously and “called for greater honesty with uk families about what it means to prepare for the very real threat to national security”. He also said security situation is more dangerous than it has been at any point in his career and the UK can no longer rely on military forces alone to keep security safe. Finally the comment of “sons and daughters must be prepared to fight” it would take a “whole nation effort” and “families would have to face real sacrifice”

i mean wtaf? I certainly won’t be rushing to the frontline that’s for sure. What’s going on? Very concerned

Australia nearly got starved out by the Japanese

That premise isn't actually correct. The Australian population was never in danger of mass starvation, due to domestic food production, but the war did cause significant economic disruption and introduced rationing of certain goods (like clothing, petrol, tea, and butter) due to supply chain issues and the need to support the war effort.

Those who say it's not their war, do you think Putin will discriminate in your favour or something?

He doesn't care. His soldiers rape women. They steal children. They bombard civilians.

Eyesopenwideawake · 16/12/2025 09:24

Given that Germany feels it necessary to start digging trenches in Poland to shore up their defences, it's time to start preparing in the rest of Europe.

The youth of today will not fight .

And if a state player is starving the UK of imported food, because we have foolishly allowed ourselves to become dependent on imports.
If presented with a choice of starving or trying to prevent the attacks on food imports? Under those circumstances most people will fight rather than starve.

The youth of today will not fight .

How old was the Sydney shooter? Remind me?
How old are the guys climbing Lamp posts to tie union jacks to them?
Oh, they’ll fight
Some of them have just been waiting for an excuse for awhile

If it comes down to it, I’m not sure it’s a invitation. More a you will or you’ll be shot.
They will fill the prisoners up with conscientious objector first and then they’ll start shooting people
And then you’ll sign up

I've looked into this. If staying in the UK, Skegness is considered the least likely to be hit by a nuclear bomb, or the resulting fallout. Australia is considered the safest country, owing to it being geographically furthest away from conflict, self sustainable in terms of resources, and less likely to enter conflict due to political neutrality.

I say this all with tongue in cheek of course.

Warfare is far more likely to be waged by unconventional means. In fact, it already is.

It's not going to happen. When both sides have the means to completely obliterate each other's populations in a matter of minutes (and don't let any Russian apologists tell you the UK couldn't do that to Russia because it absolutely can), the prospect of any direct confrontation between them is so remote as to not bother thinking about

But is this not why world leaders are treading carefully around Trump, because if anyone is mad enough to do this he is.

That’s just not the case at all. Furthermore, I’d rather be shot than fight for this shit show country

I think we’re on course for 2029/30 As was predicted in 2019 before the alleged pandemic

"Alleged pandemic" 🙄

As a menopausal woman, I'd fight - I've certainly got the right attitude for it 😆

I wouldn't want my kids to fight, because them coming to harm is my worst nightmare, but I would personally if needed.

I get the young are fitter and more agile, but surely the healthy middle aged have advantages. I'd like to think we're more cunning and wily at least. Calmer under pressure. Some of us presumably are very fit.

But I don't like the idea of sacrificing kids to a war started by grown ups.

As a fellow menopausal woman- we ride at dawn 😅

I come from a military family background, they ought in previous wars after what happened in Iraq not one of my family members would fight for this country again. So the goverments going to have a big shock & its not just my family who feel like this.

That article is more aboutnour sons and daughters choosing career paths that in turn will help defend the country more than our kids fighting on the front line.
Warfarenof the future will include more cyber attacks, drones etc.

Those of you dismissing any idea of war, what would you do about the situation in Ukraine?
Nothing? Monetary support but no further? Let Putin win? Something else? Not thought about it?

Give them whatever we can spare. Russia will stamp their feet and make empty threats, but that's it. They're over 3 years into a war they thought would be over in a week (that they still laughably refuse to say is even a war at all), I wouldn't be losing much sleep over what they think

Crofthead · 16/12/2025 09:02

Russia can’t even overpower Ukraine after years. Don’t worry about them attacking Britain.

Meadowfinch · 16/12/2025 09:00

Russia is already indulging in a dirty war. Major cyber attacks aren't driven by spotty teenagers in a bedroom in Croydon, they are driven by state players.
The attack on JLR caused a significant drop in UK manufacturing output. Who do you imagine caused that?
I think we are far more likely to experience attempts to damage our national infrastructure - banking, power, gas, internet, water, food distribution etc

Russian political interference and attempts to create social unrest have been happening for a while.

As an individual, you can take basic measures. Keep some cash readily available, think about back up system to things you use every day. Keep essential paperwork or back up electronic versions to a local drive or USB. AWS and other data networks have already proved vulnerable. Consider how you would get through a week without access to the Internet or all your normal modern conveniences.
Beyond that there is little you can do now. I also have a 17yo. I'm aware of the threat but the only sensible approach is hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Tana433 · 16/12/2025 08:59

@Alpacajigsaw Completely agree with you. No way are my kids or nephews/nieces going to be fighting for this country. We didnt ask for it, not our circus, not our monkeys.

HoneyParsnipSoup · 16/12/2025 08:54

Then why don’t we just stand the army down and why are the experts concerned?

Because if you're an expert with a military background, or in a ministerial position covering the military, you're likely to (quite reasonably) believe the best way to ensure security is with a large well funded military - something we haven't had in the UK for at least the last 30 years.

The best way for this to be achieved quickly is by warning that in the event of a hypothetical war with a very real enemy we wouldn't be adequately prepared. It absolutely doesn't mean that a war is inevitable or even desired.

Also, there's nowhere to "stand the army down" from as they're currently not mobilized for war or doing anything they wouldn't otherwise be doing.
