Dog has me at my wits end.

Our dog has been to vets, behavioural trainer and we have followed lots of other advice. She gets 2 big walks a day. Morning 2 miles and early evening 1.5 miles. She is a Cavapoo and 8 years old.

I’m at my wits end. She is a quite a nice dog but the destruction and attention seeking is killing me and I absolutely resent her now. I can’t have anyone in the house during the day without her barking forever. I can’t leave her without her barking forever. She has to be with me the whole time. We’ve tried anxiety medicine - no difference in behaviour. Behaviour has always been not great.

My kids adore her. What the hell do I do. WIBU to rehome her.

I used to do what I called a 'sniffy walk' for my German shepherd, it knackered her out much more than a long walk. I used chopped up raw carrots into little pieces, took her to our back garden which is actually a field across the road, sprinkled the bits all over the grass. She spent hours sniffing them out. She'd be tired out and calm for hours after.

MidnightMeltdown · 18/12/2025 12:55

Entirely your fault OP. You’ve got a dog without thoroughly researching the breed or investing in proper training. Now you want to dump it off somewhere like a piece of rubbish. Hope your kids do the same to you when you get old.

Sharptonguedwoman · 18/12/2025 12:47

vanillalattes · 16/12/2025 10:44

I don’t think OP is coming back.

I don't blame her. Long time dog owner here who made huge numbers of mistakes when we got our much loved Lab X who got lots of training and lots of walks and was not perfect.
Unless I've missed it, OP doesn't say if she's at home all day with endless time to deal with the dog or whether she's trying to work at home. If she's trying to work, then no way can she spend 3-4 hours at least walking, playing with, training the dog and it would be better off in daycare, which is monumentally expensive. Maybe agility training might help if it's gently done but it's yet more time we have no idea that OP has.
On holiday in Cornwall I noticed nearly every dog (and there were loads) was a poodle cross. As a child, the only poodle I ever knew belonged to someone who had to have it put down as it bit people. It was a very highly strung, snappy little dog and yet here we are, breeding those genes into nearly every crossbreed dog.

I've never met a "Cavapoo" that isn't slightly mental (and I meet and have worked with a lot of dogs). A mix of two highly intelligent, high energy breeds, they are prone to separation anxiety and attention seeking behaviour, and can be very destructive if they are unhappy. Literally every problem you've listed is a common issue with the breed mix. Ask any vet.
They need to use their brain all the time or they need to be absolutely knackered. Are the walks you do including any off lead running, ball or scent work? Or just walking on a lead?
As you've said, you have sought lots of advice from professionals, so MN probably can't add much more than they've given you. It would he a hard rehome at 8 years old and with the issues you've got with her. I don't think I could do it personally, but I wouldn't judge you. Just please don't shove her on Gumtree or Facebook (I'm sure you won't). There are few Poo mix charities about that can point you in the right direction if you choose to rehome.

I have a Cavapoo and she is nothing like this. Most well natured dog, quite happy on her own, rarely barks and has never destructed a thing, maybe I’m just lucky

He’s also not an accredited behaviourist and has no recognised qualifications.

Not surprised to hear that, thanks.

Probablyshouldntsay · 18/12/2025 11:18

Sorry OP- not intending to have a go at all, but 3.5 miles total isn’t very long. Do you have enough time in the day to up the mileage? Or funds to book a dog walker?

Not an avid watcher but he has never asked (for me) two critical questions. Is the dog neutered and does it get enough exercise.

Call in Graham from tv - Dogs behaving very badly. . He has magic solutions, almost always behavioural.

What a good idea. Of course some will say you need experience but chat gpt will be able to access millions of sources for advice.

I have two cavapoo littermates. I asked chatGPT for help in a low moment. It has changed my life (and theirs) and my house is so much calmer. I was at my wits end and couldn’t cope much longer - I’ve used two real life trainers previously, one was excellent but ChatGPT was like having that trainer in my house to guide me through every eventuality. They’re not perfect now but a million times better and still improving. My dogs are almost 8. Highly recommend trying it, you won’t regret it.

edit to add: we already used crates at bedtime but now use them more during the day too for them to settle in. You’ll be surprised how quickly they learn to switch off with the right leadership from you. It was stressful but totally worth it!

I was going to same exactly the same.

I have a rescue poodle who came to us with extreme separation anxiety, would bark at pretty much anything and just didn’t ever settle. We put in a LOT of hard work - I didn’t actually spend huge amounts on trainers but did do my research and committed to it. I’d say the separation anxiety took about 6-9 months of very consistent daily work (look up Be Right Back dog training) and introduced lots of games and play plus incorporated ‘settle’ & ’place’ commands. He only gets about an hour walk most days but once or twice a week we do a long explore with plenty of sniffing and off lead and at home we have enrichment toys, sniffle mats and chews.

ours is an absolute joy now - still barks at the doorbell (keep saying one day I’ll tackle that!) but can be left for a couple of hours, settles in his bed or on the sofa and is just lovely. I don’t believe there is anything wrong with the dog but I do think if you can’t or won’t invest time and effort into training you should look to rehome.

Hats off to you being able to retrain a dog. Thats not easy and your dog is extremely lucky. I dont get the feeling the OP was looking at putting in the hard yards and dedication needed to achieve similar.

People should not breed dogs like this.

If people didn’t buy these dogs there would be no market to breed them for … irresponsible people, I WANT as dog so I shall have one regardless as to whether I am capable of looking after it properly!

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 16/12/2025 13:10

Are you just doing walks? It’s probably not enough. My dog does around 7-10 hours a week at a scent training ‘club’, hydro/fun swimming 1-2 times a month, daily walks (albeit she will sometimes refuse a rainy walk as it’s not her main source of stimulation anyway), daily training for 10-15 mins, 10-15 mins of daily physio exercises.

In between that she mostly just wants down time on her own or snoozy cuddles.

She’s a dachshund, so technically a working breed, but we do a lot to tire her brain out.

BuildbyNumbere · 16/12/2025 13:04

PInkyStarfish · 15/12/2025 15:22

I can’t stand these dogs. I have met so many that are exactly as you describe.

I would usually side with keeping the dog if it were another bred, one that might calm down and behave with the correct training but these are one of the worst mixed breeds and I’ve met people who have spent a small fortune on behaviourists and the dog is still bloody awful.

Will the breeder have her back?

After 8 years?!? 🤣🤣

Ablondiebutagoody · 15/12/2025 15:18

Maybe she could "run away"?

Disgusting comment. Hope you don’t have pets … or kids for that matter!!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 16/12/2025 11:15

Please don't rehome her. She's 8 with separation anxiety - what the hell do you think will happen to her?

Poor dog.

BuildbyNumbere · 16/12/2025 13:02

You’ve allowed her to get like this over an 8 year period … she should have been trained when a puppy!! This is now the result of poor pet ownership … then get rid of her onto someone else, disgusting.
You need to sort this out, take her training and keep going and working with her at home. Is she crate trained?

She’s having a long gap between walks, what’s happening during the day? Have you tried a lick mat, snuffle mat or a kong? Some hide and seek in the garden ? It’s a long time with no mental stimulation

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 16/12/2025 11:15

Dozycuntlaters · 16/12/2025 11:06

My friend has a cavapoochon so i'm guessing pretty similar and he is the most annoying dog in the world. Not his fault, she hasn't trained him and doesn't walk him which I think is bloody cruel.

I'm sorry but a walk of 2 miles and 1.5 miles is not a big walk, its a small walk. He is bored and understimulated hence his behaviour, poor thing. Apart from those two tiny walks per day what else are you doing with him, or do you just go about your day and expect him to potter about and amuse himself?

vanillalattes · 16/12/2025 10:44

I don’t think OP is coming back.
