To think that antisemitism now needs to be tackled in the strongest possible way?

The Bondi thread in chat was eye opening.

Forty pages and a lot of it whataboutery, excuses and vile antisemitism.

It’s disgusting.

It needs to be called out. It needs to be rooted out.

I feel so sorry for the Jewish communities everywhere. How can they possibly feel safe?

We consulted with the police about our own daughter's Bat Mitzvah recently and decided it was safe enough without paid security but that we'd ensure a friend was at the door to question people on arrival.

My cousin in the states had armed security at her son's Bar Mitzvah. And every one of my family's Jewish school or synagogue in the states has armed security guards stationed outside. My father's didn't but they had a mass attack about 10 years ago so they do now.

This is all so sobering.

I’m trying to imagine what would happen if any other demographic were under such a consistent threat. People would be up in arms and it would be frontline news.

I am so sorry you are all having to live like this. It’s not right. 💐

They are a tiny minority of Jews worldwide. Shame on you.

And? A tiny minority of Muslims are extremist but that leads to an increase in Islamophobia. I’m not saying it’s ok. It is just a fact.

SunnyViper · 15/12/2025 13:38

Reindeerrose · 15/12/2025 12:39

Same goes for some Christians, Muslims, Hindus... It's not exclusive to any group.

Exactly and I made that point about the increase in Islamophobia during the gulf conflicts. Extremism in any religion reflects badly for the entire religion, especially when unchallenged.

The government in Israel has done what it was always obvious it would do. And which has been pointed out, previously. Which is that it’s genocide has resulted, amongst other things, in nutcases worldwide who mistakenly believe they are taking revenge. I don’t support it, because I don’t support any violence, but I think that’s what’s happening.

Shite.

please see 9/11, 7/7, Manchester Arena, Bataclan, multiple gatherings in Europe, etc, etc, etc.

We are all targets for radicalised Islamists. Someone on another thread thought that it was an actual plus that only 34% of Muslims in this country would not report a terrorist.

I would say a horrible difference is that there is a mass of ignorant idiots who seem to think that the Gaza situation is “baddies vs. goodies” and Jews are clearly the enemy and people on Bondi beach - sad though it was - are to blame for the poor agonised gunmen’s justifiable actions.

Sorry how is it not being dealt with strongly already? I agree anti-semitism is awful but I honestly can’t see how the government/police aren’t already dealing with it harshly?

Well, I don’t think that the government officially recognising the state of Palestine just before the anniversary of the 07 October attacks was great.

I’m not sure that helped Jewish people feel more safe.

As for the Pro Palestine marches still going ahead that week, well words fail me.

David Schwimmer will almost certainly have been posting clips in the context of calling out/criticising/drawing attention to anti-semitism, not supporting it himself.

Yes, thank you.

my DD attended one of her good friends Batmiztvah parties recently at their local synagogue. They had to hire security ar the front gates. Security guards for a 13 year olds party. What is this country/world coming to? 😢

I think it’s actually a broader question than that - which is what do western countries do about radical Islam and the number of angry young men being radicalised into attacking people in the name of Islam.

Jewish communities are a target because of the ongoing conflict in Gaza - but, there is a more general trend in terrorism against ‘the west and western values’, and in particular by young men originating from / second generations from a handful of countries.

If you want to discuss attacks on Western values you do need to look beyond just radical Islam. Christian nationalism of the Trump/Orban is arguably a greater thread, embedded as it is in the powers of government. Addressing radical religious everything is what is needed.

Cynic17 · 15/12/2025 12:54

I am not a Jew, but I find antisemitism the most vile, baffling and heartbreaking thing I have ever come across. We, as a world population, seem to have learnt nothing.
In the UK, I think our politicians need to be much more vocal and active, especially the Labour party, given that antisemitism was rife among (a minority of) their members only a few years ago.

25milesfromhome · 15/12/2025 12:50

Echobelly · 15/12/2025 12:16

I would disagree that our government 'enables antisemitism'. I presume in that sense you are referring to allowing the Gaza marches?

I am Jewish and attended several of them, as have other Jewish friends. I have got a different picture of them from what was painted in much of the press. We never saw any placards nor heard any chants targeting Jews - yet they've often been portrayed as some anti-Jewish hate fest where Jews would be abused or worse just for being in their vicinity which they weren't at all. Protesters were there to highlight the appalling violence Netanyahu's government was committing, and continued to committed despite the ceasefire, in Gaza.

I think in many ways things are being conflated - to me, extreme Islamist violence is a separate thing to antisemitism as we traditionally think of it. We can't compare threats of awful things like Bondi beach to the different awfulness of the Nazi regime which people sometimes seem to be trying to do. We're not at risk of having an extreme Islamist government in the UK for example (despite what Elon Musk thinks, he's an idiot). I think the government and security forces are doing their best to prevent attacks, and to discourage antisemitism.

I think the best solution is more community cohesion, interfaith work, and just getting people in some communities to simply meet Jewish people and see us as human beings.
.

Extreme Islamist violence is rooted in antisemitism, as has been amply demonstrated by the way extremely violent Islamists keep attacking and killing Jews.

Sorry how is it not being dealt with strongly already? I agree anti-semitism is awful but I honestly can’t see how the government/police aren’t already dealing with it harshly?

When masked gangs of people are roaming the streets chanting horrible slogans and causing such disturbance that people are scared to leave their homes someone has lost control of the situation. The terrorist supporters are destroying public property and leaving hateful posters and stickers all over my city and putting up flags all over the place. It's a total mess and really, really isolating and exhausting for me. I am aware I can only speak for myself but that's my responsibility.

People say things like 'Jews don't feel safe' and that's true.. but it's also true we aren't actually safe, it's not just a feeling. As I have said many times and will keep saying, my 11 year old daughter was attacked by a group of teenagers yelling free Palestine. In school! The head teacher was apologetic but said she should really be careful about who she tells she's Jewish so I had to file a police report. Which came to nothing of course. So there is plenty of education needed in literally every area of responsibility.

do you disagree with the idea that 'globalise the intifada' is inherently problematic?

This is one of my local marches - hordes of masked students rampaging around campus regularly. With the stated and confirmed goal of eradicating israel. They put up signs all across campus to 'globalise the intifada' and 'death to the IDF' and shout that awful river to the sea chant.

It never does end with Jews 😥

Reindeerrose · 15/12/2025 12:24

I didn't see the thread in chat so can't comment on that. The Bondi beach attack was horrific, especially that poor little girl who was killed. 💔 I think it's incredibly difficult to tackle antisemitism effectively unless we can first define and recognise it clearly. Different groups are making this challenging. Some supporters of Israel are calling very legitimate criticisms of Israel antisemitism. Conversely, some Palestine supporters are framing genuine antisemitism as just criticism of Israel.
To deal with it properly, we really need a clear definition, but it seems like many people are muddying the waters for their own reasons.

The Jewish community in this country are massively productive, never cause any bother, get on with it, and are persecuted, enabled by our government.

I just don’t get it either.

I completely agree and I’m sick of it.

I know of a family who have been here since the 1800 and they’re leaving for Israel. They don’t feel safe, and that’s not right.

We don’t have to live like this.

What about the Iranian Mullahs and the leadership of Afghanistan who believe that no women should have civil or human rights?
Do we blame our Muslim neighbours for that? Say they've got a target on their back?

Yep. That’s why there was a spike in Islamophobia during the gulf conflicts.

I hope you’re calling out the bad behaviour of everyone from whatever ethnic group you happened to be born into?

If you’re white / christian perhaps you want to apologise for the KKK lynchings in America?

Or maybe you feel that’s nothing to do with you? Because it’s people you don’t know and have no control over?

Making people who just happen to be part of the same religion or ethnic group in some way culpable for the actions of people they have nothing to do with, thousands of miles away is literally what racism is. Does that still need explaining?!
