To think the biggest difference between family Christmas' is whether you dress up or not

This is a light-hearted one after some frankly depressing threads this morning!

But after having a few blended Christmas' now the biggest difference doesn't seem to be when you eat, whether you have turkey or not, if you have alcohol from 6am onwards but whether you dress up. My family is firmly in the pyjamas from Christmas Eve to boxing day camp, we might throw on some different leggings to go for a walk, but hey we're wearing big coats so is it really needed?! But we then go to some houses and suddenly everyone is super fancy, wearing heels inside the house and maybe even changing again for dinner.

I feel like all Christmas invitations should come with a dress code!

YABU = No clearly there's something else to watch out for with a Christmas invite because other families are crazy
YANBU = I've also been incorrectly dressed at another family's Christmas

Neither of us own a Christmas jumper Grin

We do get up and dressed though, as the dog needs a walk. Normally fleece leggings and a big jumper for me, trousers and a warm top for DH.

What about the people who just wear their regular clothes? In our house we put on the normal things we'd wear on a winter weekend. Staying in pajamas would remind me of being ill and depress me, and dressing up seems a bit daft to faff about with a turkey and then sit in my own house.

Daisywhatsyouranswer · 13/12/2025 12:59

I had to read your op twice, are you honestly saying you go to peoples houses in Xmas day in your pyjamas?

PandoraSocks · 13/12/2025 12:56

I don't wear PJs during the day unless I'm ill. It feels wrong.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 13/12/2025 12:54

Pre-Christmas jumpers, I just wore a red, green or sparkly top with jeans. Nowadays, usually a Christmas jumper and jeans. Anyone who visits wears similar. When I was little, I'd wear a velvety dress like others have mentioned.

I couldn't ever wear pyjamas during the day. I'd never feel ready and able to get on with stuff!

ChristmasinBrighton · 13/12/2025 12:46

I’m from a council flat background and we always wore our best clothes Christmas Day.

I felt a proper idiot staying at aristo uni boyfriends for Christmas and finding they all stayed in pyjamas all day, even his intimidating dowager style grandmother.

TheChosenTwo · 13/12/2025 12:45

We are not a family who dress up
for christmas. We host for a lot of people, it’s a large scale operation and I’m not doing that dressed in my fancy clothes. We do presents then get showered and changed into clean but comfortable house clothes. Everyone who joins us is also in comfortable clothing made for sitting about playing games and eating. Loose fitting clothes mainly!
I’ll most likely be in my leggings and a sweatshirt. I don’t give a crap what anyone else turns up in, wear your best party dress if you want!
No pyjamas for me, I don’t even own a pair as I sleep naked which is a bit much even for our informal christmas 😂

Lostsadandconfused · 13/12/2025 12:37

My family always dresses for Christmas. We decide on theme colours and everyone dresses to the theme. This year it’s red, pink, white, gold and silver.

I’m wearing a pink linen shell top and matching bias cut midi skirt, silver sandals. And pearl snowman earrings and a Christmas headband.

Even years when my ex husband and I spent Christmas Day on our own we’d still dress up for lunch and set the table with the best china etc.

TroubledBloodyMary · 13/12/2025 12:30

Who are these (possibly drunk) posters imagining that anyone shows up at someone else’s home for. Christmas lunch in pyjamas? 🧐

I cannot get on board with wearing pyjamas during any daytime - never mind Christmas.

Have some decorum people :)

I don’t even wear them at night. I just don’t understand the fascination.

I host at Christmas - usually between 12 and 16. I don't care what you wear in general, but if you show up in pyjamas you're not getting any dinner. It's fine if it's just the immediate family at home, but if you have guests or if you are a guest, it's disrespectful, IMHO.

Yes, it's not like guests would go round to someone's house in pyjamas any other time of the year, surely, so why do it on a special day like Christmas? Boxing Day is pyjama/relaxing day in our house. I want to chill and slob out, but Christmas Day is for fine things! 😬

Not the point but those of you wearing jeans on Christmas Day, aren’t they uncomfortable after all the food?

Jeans are very comfortable clothes that

Crushed23 · 13/12/2025 12:08

I always dress up! Even when I’ve been invited to more casual Christmasses. It’s a special occasion, plus I love an excuse to dress up tbh as I’m pretty casual in every day life.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 13/12/2025 12:07

I hate the pyjamas thing. I don't judge it in other people - obviously do what you like! But for me, pyjamas when not in bed signify illness or depressingness, not special occasions!

There are a few differences between the way my family does Christmas Day and the way my in-laws do. It mostly comes down to timings of meals, present opening etc and the fact that the the tv never goes on with my family. We play more games than the in-laws too.

Ahh that was my Christmas outfit in the early 90s too! Usually a Laura Ashley hand-me down. Lace tights and shiny shoes always made me feel special 😍

Yes very special. We were very lucky ❤️

We always had new clothes for Christmas Day as children in the 70s. Velvet dress, lacy tights, patent shoes. If we are going to my sisters we will dress up. Nice blouse and trousers. Men, smart casual. This year we are staying at home and at my sister’s Boxing Day and we will dress up when we all get together. Pajamas? God no

SpigTheFish · 13/12/2025 11:36

In my family group and friends too, we all dress up for Christmas.

I cant imagine spending days in pyjamas.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/12/2025 11:36

I dressed up as a child because we often went out for Christmas lunch. A Christmas Day at home tends to be a Christmas Jumper day. I don't want to be cooking in best clothes, and we tend to start the day with parkrun.

I wouldn't spend the day slobbing around in pjs. They're shapeless things for lying and sleeping in and not that comfortable for moving aound the house in because the bust: waist: hip ratios aren't designed for women's curves.
(Currently slobbing around the house in joggers-of-despair and a hoodie, much more comfortable and warmer!)

BluePeterAdventWreath · 13/12/2025 11:32

I’m from a heels inside family and make an effort every day family - shower, hair washed, make up on, whether I’m in, out, or working from home. It’s what I do, for me, I like this version of me best and before anyone says otherwise, I am from a close family and we understand the spirit of Christmas, children, charity etc etc

PJ’s - shower and put clean ones on, if you’re going to that much effort, why not just wear clothes, joggers? I own one pair of PJs which I bought for an overnight hospital stay, so do you put a bra and knickers on too? If not do you not feel slovenly and scruffy and half awake. The only time I’d be like that is if I was ill, so it’s alien to me.

This thread has made me feel old.
If you can't dress up at Christmas, what's the point of life?

EXACTLY

though I don't know if age has anything to do with it, maybe people always did this

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 13/12/2025 11:23

No, we are a pretty informal family but we dress up a bit for Christmas Day

You get these threads every year, so I know it's normal, but I literally cannot imagine anything more depressing than spending Christmas Day in PJs or leggings.

Christmas is a time for a bit of sparkle!! That's the dress code

springtome · 13/12/2025 11:22

I understand staying in your pj’s in your own home but if you were visiting someone in their home, surely you would get dressed?

We do get dressed and try and look nice or at least festive.

gogomomo2 · 13/12/2025 11:20

Never nightwear ever (hate it even at night!) but there’s a mix of jeans and smarter here. I’m most comfortable in a dress and leggings or thick tights anyway but I’ll put on something a little more festive eg my dark green velvet dress rather than cotton, dh puts on a shirt rather than t shirt typically, mum dresses up more and insists dad wears trousers not jeans but my brothers will be in jeans so no enforcement. My DD’s wear what they want (adults) but tend to follow my style anyway
