i remeber when holiday cards where more personalized to people u give them to but by a friend i just recieve a generic card with them and their toddler on focus with «merry chritsmas and happy new years to you and your closest!» and thats its. No personality to the card or where i save them up more than just putting them on the fridge til chritsmas is over and then bin. Im not saying people should write a whole bible on the card but cmon😂.

I'm thinking the OP isn't in the UK as she has referred to Christmas as 'the holidays'. Maybe different expectations culturally?

If she's American, she's completely out of touch with the done thing in the US.

So you're not satisfied that people have gone to the trouble of getting a photo taken, printed, and your correct address on the envelope?

Nobody I know under the age of 45 sends a traditional card any more. It's all photos of them and their family, pets, and whatnot. I like to see the photos, especially when they add a new baby or pet to the family.

We did this the year I had a bad accident.

to be honest that year people were lucky they got cards. It was a lovely photo though

Livemenot · 12/12/2025 19:52

I would just appreciate that I received a card and that someone thought of me. Plenty of people don’t even bother sending a card, much less making it personal.

@ThePoshUns
I’ll spell things correctly. I know that must be shocking to someone whose messages look like they were typed by a raccoon running across a phone screen

Lol you really don't, you have multiple spelling mistakes and you've spelt personalised the American way :P

I only send cards to the neighbours, because they send them to us. It usually says something like ‘merry Christmas, from OopOop and family’. I don’t have any memories with them, or anything personal to write.
I don’t send cards to close friends and family, because I see them all the time and it’s a waste of a tree! I can talk to them about our memories 🤷🏻‍♀️

"To neighbour, Merry Christmas! Remember when that fox shat on the pavement and we both stood in it? Love, Me"

"To neighbour, best wishes for Christmas and 2026 when, for the love of God, I am begging you to stop parking so close to my car that I can't open the driver's door. Have a great one!"

I think this may be a wind up post

I just like getting a card tbh. Sure, it’s nice if the sender has personalised it a bit, but I imagine many people get “what the fuck do I write?” stage fright over stuff like this.

DH and I have a tradition of writing ours in the same pub on the same day every December. Our friends can generally tell where they were on the list by the soppiness of the message inside (and the quality of the handwriting) and whether theirs was written after drink one or drink three.

roshi42 · 12/12/2025 15:46

Oh dear - you've just described my cards! I figure the photo of me and the toddler is the nice thing - they're mostly for relatives I don't see very often so I think they'll likely be interested to see what the baby looks like now. But I don't bother with a personalised message in all honesty. I don't really get any with long messages either, but I'm pleased to receive them still. I'd be a bit sad if I got none at all - shows someone's thinking of you and nice to have up over the few weeks of Christmas. They'll be a thing of the past in another generation though I predict.

saveforthat · 12/12/2025 15:39

Regardless of how much is written in the card, they are a token that someone is thinking of you and add to the Christmas decorations. Nothing like a row of Christmas cards on the mantelpiece over a roaring fire.

Jackiepumpkinhead · 12/12/2025 15:34

The cheek of you 😂

See I’m with OP here, there’s basically no point just doing ‘best wishes’. Why bother?!

I bother because I like Christmas cards. To me they are Christmas. I like looking at them displayed and I like sending them. I might not write much in each one but I do think about the person as I'm writing them

Boomer55 · 12/12/2025 15:24

With the cost of postage, and the boredom of doing them, I wish we could all stop them. But people get very stroppy if that is suggested. 🙄😂

OopOop · 12/12/2025 14:57

Starting to see why people don’t send you friendly, personal Christmas cards to be honest OP!

Getting a comment deleted on a thread about Christmas cards is quite a feat! I missed it thankfully!

1apenny2apenny · 12/12/2025 15:02

I solved this issue by saying ‘that was a great day, thanks, see you soon’ when we’ve ’created memories’ with people and stopped sending any Christmas cards 🙂🎄

Meowmeowgirl · 12/12/2025 14:59

@OopOop
mentioned a generic card. You turned it into a personality analysis. Impressive leap — shame it landed nowhere.

@Tintarella you get it! I rather someone send me a message on phone instead with that instead of it in a card

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying sorry @Meowmeowgirl Blush .... but I am happy with any Christmas cards I get. DH and I only get about 25 these days, we used to get about 70 pre 2010s...

Whatever I write, I always check that the spelling and grammar are correct before I post it!

They have a toddler. It's a miracle you got a card!

I used to think this. Now i have a toddler and a partner with cancer I am 1) grateful to be thought of by others sufficiently for them to write, address, stamp and post a card and 2) massively smug to send any of my own with the correct names and addresses to arrice before 25/12.
