Have I committed fraud?

Boxedin2431 · 12/12/2025 12:25

I am a single mum to three.

I have a UC review and bank statements are due.
I have three bank accounts and two I have not declared.
The two bank accounts I have not declared get child maintenance paid in from my children’s dads, respectively.
I have not had any other income apart from the maintenance and some help from my dad sometimes.
i transfer money between all three.
Two bank accounts are in my birth name, the third is in my middle name.

Am I in trouble when I declare them?

I only have UC, child benefit into the one I have declared.
i have child maintenance into one bank account and another child maintenance into the other bank account.

Shall I include 6 month statement for all three?

She has declared all income
maintenance is not relevant income

again, I don’t really agree with this, much more focus should be on NRP supporting their children rather than taxpayers.
but based on the current rules the OP has not hidden considered income, she has not committed fraud or received UC she is not entitled to

Agreed, but if asked to provide all bank statements and income, whether exempt to your claim or not ~ all bank statements should be provided.
There is a declaration somewhere within UC to advise universal credit are enabled to contact banks to request all financial details of each of their clients ~ and they do opt to take this route from time to time; fully accept there is nothing in the other accounts to affect the claim which is why it makes sense for them to submit all information

Jugjug · 12/12/2025 17:53

If you are getting the same amount of uc as you would of if you had declared everything properly in failing to see how its “fraud” or why anyone would care if you just explain you made a mistake.

google convicted benefits fraudsters and there’s always a specific amount they swindled. If you’ve swindled nothing it’s not fraud

viques · 12/12/2025 17:52

I have. And while child maintenance might be disregarded I imagine they will want to take a close look at the OPs finances as most people would think operating three bank accounts under three different names is a bit questionable.

Schoolchoicesucks · 12/12/2025 17:52

You should declare them all. Maintenance is disregarded but just showing them one account with transfers in from your other two will look as though you are trying to hide a source of income. Share the information and explain it was just a mistake at the earliest opportunity.

I send/lend/give money on occasion to someone on UC.
This has never been a problem.
But you do need to declare all accounts.
There was talk of the government granting powers to search accounts recently, but I'm not sure what happened with that.

The powers were passed and are active as of last week via kings assent.
I’ve commented about it further back

Sorry to disappoint you but she won't get into trouble because she hasn't committed fraud and has received the UC she's entitled to.

claiming you thought maintenance was disregarded when you own up to juggling money in three bank accounts you are operating under different names is not exactly a brilliant defence is it?

Get in touch with UC and talk through what has happened.

You can disagree with the system
but the OP does not have to declare child maintenance as income

Child maintence is disregarded

Yes, this is benefit fraud and hopefully they throw the book at you for it.

How is having 3 bank accounts with no money in them 'benefit fraud'? 🤨

I have never claimed UC, I assume at the initial claim you just declare your income?
totally agree she now needs to declare all bank accounts, but that does not show any intent to defraud

When I first claimed, I had to show statements... basically to prove that I didn't have £16k in savings. This was before Covid though. I know things were a bit more relaxed during the lockdowns as people were not going to the Job Centres.

BrokenWingsCantFly · 12/12/2025 17:27

Child maintenance hasn't been counted towards your income for years. As long as you don't have savings your hiding then everything will be fine. Tell them about the accounts though, they will see it is coming as maintenance, and not from various people as some cash in hand work or something

bittertwisted · 12/12/2025 17:26

XenoBitch · 12/12/2025 16:57

When you have a review, you have to declare all bank accounts. Yes, the CM will be disregarded, but a bank account is a bank account so it needs to be declared, even if there is nothing in it.
OP will show the statements and nothing will happen.

Former friend of mine who claimed benefits back in the days of Incapacity Benefit had two bank accounts. One was for her claim, the other was for monies she obtained from elsewhere including from a sugar daddy. She got caught in the end and done for fraud. They seem to have a way of findng out, I never dobbed her in it but it did affect our friendship, which came to and end as a result of her activities

None of which bears any similarity to OP's situation.

AngelicKaty · 12/12/2025 17:21

Bromptotoo · 12/12/2025 14:37

Another poster who fails to grasp what fraud is.

If the OP acquired title to benefit, or increased the benefit they were paid, by concealing assets or not disclosing earned/unearned income that is fraud.

If they've failed/forgotten to disclose bank accounts handling disregarded income then there's no fraud.

Absolutely. The worst OP is guilty of is an administrative error, certainly not fraud in any legal sense (as desperate as some of these PPs want it to be 🙄 ).

AngelicKaty · 12/12/2025 17:04

KilkennyCats · 12/12/2025 14:15

So monetary “gifts” of any kind plus money received from the child’s own parent; basically any money besides actual earned income have no bearing on your benefit entitlement?
This is literally insane.

Not entirely. Child maintenance is disregarded, as are small, infrequent monetary gifts. However, large gifts could affect a claimant's UC if it is more than the first savings threshold of £6k (which would result in a proportional reduction in UC up to £16k for the period(s) this amount is held, and then no UC entitlement at all above £16k - the second savings threshold). Similarly, regular gifts e.g. £300pm from parents to help with living costs could be treated as income. Nothing that OP has told us though indicates she would fall foul of these rules as she says she spends everything she has every month (so no savings would accumulate at all, let alone in excess of £6k) and her dad helps her out "sometimes" which, I'm guessing would be when she has an unexpected bill or emergency (like the washing machine breaking down).

XenoBitch · 12/12/2025 16:57

I have one account for UC and Child Benefit.
I have one account for child maintenance from one dad.
I have another account for child maintenance for the other dad.

Just declare them all and explain that you have no other income except child maintenance.

PurpleLlama421 · 12/12/2025 16:53

Boxedin2431 · 12/12/2025 12:29

I thought that child maintenance was disregarded.
Will I get into trouble for this? There are no savings, every penny is spent every month.

According to the government website:

“Child maintenance payments will not affect any benefits that you and your children get, including Universal Credit. You will not have to pay tax on them.”

bittertwisted · 12/12/2025 16:51

Nica07 · 12/12/2025 16:36

in which case there is zero harm in declaring all income in that respect

She has declared all income
maintenance is not relevant income
