"We're pregnant"

I hate it so much. No he isn't pregnant. Not even a bit. Yes he's going to he a father. He's expecting a baby. His partner is pregnant. How lovely that he's excited about it. What an amazing dad he's sure to be, but he is absolutely not pregnant!

I'm as grumpy as a middle-aged woman can get but this one really pisses me off. Pregnancy is a uniquely female experience. Why the fuck do men need to lay claim to it?

Do they experience morning sickness? Worry about the effects of the pregnancy on their career and earning potential? Be judged by all and sundry if they decide to have a thimbleful of wine or a slice of smoked salmon? Go through the risks and pain of childbirth?

Is it just me? (I expect so!!)

I'm guessing that surely some producer out there has created some kind of man boob strap-on nipple bottle that can hold formula/breast milk that he can slip on like a bra, that looks like a pair of boobs, that can be refilled, that he can use to nurse the child. Dear Lord if this has not been created yet, nobody grab my idea and I'll make it myself!!

Oh my god stop!! 😂😂(That said you could try Dragons' Den!)

Christ alive, Stupid Craze 1,349 that humans have made up! So do you dangle the baby over the loo or what? And how can you predict when they will urinate? How insane.

Edited

Yes. The ‘communication’ piece is that they try to predict. IRL the poor child spent about 50% of its time over a potty. In baby group.

Kid would be 15 now. I wonder how it’s doing…

Ooh, so nearly a post!

But same as being a 'little bit pregant' a person is either pregnant or not

Not the same thing. Heavily pregnant is perfectly descriptive of being within a few weeks of giving birth, while a little bit pregnant doesn't exist.

I put this on here a few months ago. It makes me cringe. Apparently it’s so the men don’t feel left out 😂😂😂

Poor lambs. See, I actually find that far more offensive to men, giving them a pretend role in something they cannot do, than acknowledging facts whilst expecting them to step up as equal parents later on.

I agree, it's so cringey and I'm not normally one to get worked up about statements! If you're not having major surgery to have a baby or pushing it out your vagina, you're not pregnant!

Goldengirl123 · 12/12/2025 09:50

BeeHive909 · 11/12/2025 23:05

There’s nothing wrong with it sorry. I’ll be using the term because it’s true. Yes I’ll be carrying the baby and pushing it out but it takes 2 to make one. Both of us are taking the fertility drugs and the relevant scans. He’s also been the one injecting me and dealt with my hormones aswell as his own. Sorry but it’s our baby not just mine.

But he isn’t pregnant. He isn’t growing a child inside his body. You are both expecting a baby but he most certainly is not pregnant!

This childless old bat absolutely hates this expression!

Why is she a childless old bat?

It is a bit naff and twee and if dh had said it I would have taken the piss, but honestly to get annoyed about it is a bit mean-spirited. Let the guy be excited about being a father, and it shows that he is invested in the process at least. I don't see it as mysognistic, personally.

Another naff, twee euphemism, often employed by the Daily Fail. "XX celeb welcomed their first child" always makes me think of them opening the door to find a baby standing there grinning at them, holding its suitcases!

Well your not far off the truth when baby arrives by surrogate via rent-a-womb !

Noooooo! People say that? I feel violent. ACTUALLY fucking violent.

You’d have loved my old colleague who said “we had a natural birth, just a couple of paracetamol and it was fiiiiine”. When she came into the office to show the baby off she said what a blessed relief the epidural had been and the look on his face was a picture. Utter twat he was. And she had a second with him. Bless her hopeful heart.

Interesting point re women saying it. Is it a form of internalised misogyny? An attempt to make the father feel more included? Pregnancy is an amazing thing which only women can achieve. Don't men have enough? Do we really need to big them up?

Definitely internalised misogyny. We can't have anything for ourselves.

ChristmasRobinFly · 12/12/2025 08:46

My son has full custody of his child. ( I know custody isn’t thr right term before you come at me!?)
he doesn’t have a biological mother because of the abuse so you have no idea what you are talking about,
this makes me so angry that you assume all women are good and men are not

Of course I understand men can be great fathers. I'm married to one. Sounds like your son is one too. Not/never pregnant though. Nothing man-hating about it, just a fact.

Horrace · 12/12/2025 08:36

Its a relatively new thing. I'm sure my father or even my husband didn't say this. Its just a new wanky thing.
Whenever I hear a bloke say it. I call them out on it. Fucking ridiculous.

Cleikumstovies · 12/12/2025 08:33

"We got stitches" "We had a freaking nurse with a freaking pair of scissors chop our perineum whilst we were trying to squat out baby"

Aye did you, Jimmy?

MClair · 12/12/2025 08:21

I agree too, I hate it too but fortunately I have never heard anyone use that expression in real life only by celebrities or on TV shows that are likely written by men.

Blarghism · 12/12/2025 07:37

Also, when did Brits start 'formula' feeding?

I wonder how many couples say we shit ourselves during labour.

Yeah, exactly. I bet these men aren't so quick to claim the undignified parts of having children. They just want the glory.

I always think of the woman doing more of a complicated process to even get pregnant. Any man can ejuculate and dont 'suffer' with periods etc....

Yes, and ejaculation is pleasurable, unlike periods and ovulation pain and plotting your temperature and peeing on ovulation sticks.

TranscendentTiger · 12/12/2025 06:18

This type of couple also "welcome" the baby rather than the woman giving birth. I absolutely despise the phrase. It completely erases the hard work a woman goes through in labour.

It's when you don't use nappies and i stead constantly monitor your kid for signs of wanting to go. Incredibly labour intensive for mum.
