To think my neighbours are just weird?

They’ve stolen my bin. Today is bin day, and all the bins were left out on the pavement after collection. I’ve just gone out to put mine away and couldn’t find it. It was in front of my driveway (I saw it from my window) but then I got a call so I couldn’t move it immediately.

I then see next door has put their bin back at the side of their house … but they’ve also taken my bin as well. Why are people so odd? I don’t understand this weird behaviour.

Bins seem to engender really strong emotions in some people.

I moved to my new house about six months ago, and every single bin day (before 7am), my neighbour comes onto my driveway and opened the bin lids to see what is inside. Sometimes he comes three or four times to check, all before 7am. I can see him clearly on the cameras.

He opens the black, brown, green and new food bins.

So, I brought them into the garden and closed the gate. Next week, he opens the gate and came into the garden to check the bins.

I told him that I could see him on the cameras and asked if there was a problem? He said that he often forgets what goes in each bin and was just checking.

I get that he’s old/retired/bored/has medical issues but, honestly I don’t care, now I just bolt the gate. He can ask his wife.

Just go next door and take the bin back.

I live in the roughest slum, and just wanted to clarify that we don't have bins, we burrow in the rubbish. I paid £8.40 to live here.

Well, apparently he had a lot more rubbish to get rid of than me so really needed 2 bins and anyway, I really should collect my bin as soon as it was emptied.

I’d say that I was at work when it was emptied but I brought it in as soon as I got home and that he needed to speak to the council about an extra bin as I needed mine

He'd then complain that I didn’t bring it in straight away and that the bin men wouldn’t empty his bin if the lid was up so needed a second bin

I’d reiterate that I was at work and he needed to ask the council for another/bigger bin, he couldn’t just take mine.

He’d then go on about how they wouldn’t give him a bigger/second bin, and wouldn’t even empty it if the bin lid was up….

He'd then go o a bit rant about the “clown-cil” and potholes, the skate park before circling back round to really needing a second bin and I should collect mine as soon as it was emptied.

It was on repeat every 2 weeks. I just nick it back now.

Oh my goodness, he sounds unhinged. 😱

GreenGiant167 · 11/12/2025 15:32

Could the binmen have put it there? Don’t overthink it, just go and take it back.

My husband did just that once. I’d got the bin in, he’d assumed I hadn’t and took the neighbour’s one. The fact that it clearly had their house number on it, and that he put it right next to our bin of the same colour didn’t ring any alarm bells for him apparently….

I'm genuinely curious as to what the debate from them constantly stealing your bin would be? 😅

Just go get it op, ring the doorbell as you start wheeling it down their drive, and if they answer just shout over your shoulder that they seem to have made a mistake and you're taking it back to your house.

This isn’t about the wrong bin. Would you go and put two bins back at the side of your house? Knowing you only have one?

I was just joining in with the thread!

If it wasn't the wrong bin then I agree with a PP. Definitely bin love which will lead to a litter of bin babies.

CinnamonBuns67 · 11/12/2025 15:02

Just go get it

Adelle79360 · 11/12/2025 15:00

People do get strange about bins. One time ours had gone missing. Turns out a neighbour 4 doors down had taken it. She couldn’t find her own (which had been left round the corner by the bin men) so just took ours. Fuckin’ weirdo!! I’m glad you retrieved it OP. You are not the odd one in this situation, your neighbour is!!

Timebudda · 11/12/2025 14:49

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/12/2025 13:19

Maybe their bin has fallen in love with your bin and they just desperately wanted to be together?

You might be blessed with a litter of baby bins.

Well obviously this there's no other explanation.
Let the bins love.

Roughest slum? Well I paid £840K to live in a shithole I guess.

Also I’m sorry but that’s such an MN way to put things 🤣🤣, it’s a sneery comment designed to make them feel better snd put others down using language a normal person wouldn’t say, Based on me saying a neighbour took my bin. I think you witnessing an actual slum would put you in a coma.

😂😂 i felt i could say this because it cannot be a serious thread and seems soooo crazy. Who wants to steal a bin fgs!! If you were actually a slum dweller i wouldn't have said it, I was being hyperbolic to get my point across not to insult you, promise! 🙏💐

Could they have moving it out of the way/wind for you?

Literal zero wind here.

Just go and get it. I’m sure it wasn’t an elaborately planned theft - likely two people who live there went to get the bin and the second didn’t realise it had already been done

Yes seeing a huge green bin already at the side of your house must be hard to miss ..,

Have you tried talking to you neighbours because, and this may shock you, they are the only ones who can answer your question.

I stole my neighbours bin once. Didn’t mean to. They asked and I gave it back! Unless it’s frequent, it’s probably not deliberate.

I’m going to assume you just don’t understand what happened.

This is not a case of they accidentally took my bin thinking it was theirs. They took their bin AND mine. That’s not a mistake.

Where do you all live that neighbours can't be trusted with your bin? Must be the roughest slum, no offence.

How do you know the bin men didnt do it?

Because like I clearly said in my OP I saw where my bin was. Also in all my years of living in a property I’ve never known a bin man to walk up a driveway and position a bin back.
