To be switched off to Christmas this year?

If anybody else just switched off to Christmas this year?

It’s almost like it’s all happening around me, but I literally don’t care at all, I have no feeling of magic, or any desire to get particularly involved.

I’m enjoying wintering and the dark nights, and cozy evenings in.

I have a fabulous trip to take away with my family unit over the Christmas period, but I have absolutely zero interest in anything Christmassy.

There aren’t any kids in the equation, And I’m really looking forward to the two weeks off. But I just have zero interest in Christmas at all this year.

Does anyone else feel the same way? I can’t quite understand where it’s come from!

@Woodlandthemes67 just reading through these comments, I just wanted to say I think you have hit the nail on the head there so well, that when life is so busy, the Christmas break if you don’t make it really wild and busy, it’s actually a fantastic time to switch off. I think you’ve really hit the nail on the head completely, and I think that’s how I would describe it going forward, it’s not that I don’t want to have the time period, I’m just going to change the way I enjoy it. Thank you!

I have no interest in Christmas and resent the money I have to spend on present and also hosting Christmas dinner. Can’t really opt out, but gosh I really would like to sleep through it all. No magic here either!

Goodness @SillyCecilia !! Who will be coming over to yours on Christmas Day?!

InMySpareTime · 11/12/2025 07:40

I’m usually feeling a bit festive by now but I’m all out of sorts this year. I saw a rat in the kitchen last week, and even though pest control have put a crapton of poison down I can’t go in the kitchen until I know the little fucker is actually dead.
The issue is taking up so much head space I can’t even bring myself to put up decorations.
Christmas technically doesn’t start until 25th and runs to the 6th of Jan, hopefully my head will be back in the game by that point (and my kitchen will be clear of critters so I can scrub it then use it again).
For me, the Christmassy feeling starts with baking mince pies or gingerbread, I can’t do that yet so I’m sticking with feeling autumnal for a bit longer. Winter is long enough without invoking it early.

StarsTwinklingPomanders · 11/12/2025 07:18

I often go in waves op and having all of this rain doesn't help at all.
I'm sure you will feel more xmassy at some point

Maryberrysbouffant · 11/12/2025 06:59

I’m the same and have been since the kids grew up.

I enjoy some of the events I go to/meeting up with friends etc but I find hosting stressful (mainly because my DH doesn’t like visitors so it rubs off on me and I end up worrying about his feelings on top of everything)

We don’t have any choice but to host because the dc live out of area and I’m not going to ban my own kids from coming at Christmas.

Mikart · 11/12/2025 06:56

Dh and I are going to a cottage by the coast on Xmas eve for a week. No Xmas food, no mingling with people we dont really like and no decorations.
Taking lots of wine, cheese and books .

I think it’s gone too far and has actually peaked. Capitalism always has to push everything to extremes.

Think post covid commerce has gone super charged to squeeze every penny out of us all and we have realised we’re being played snd Christmas has been overtaken as a marketing exercise. Hence the proliferation of new “traditions”. We are now more knowing and cynical somehow. Unless just me getting older and hitting menopause!

JimJonesLivesInMyHead · 11/12/2025 06:35

Christmas is a load of shit.

tobee · 11/12/2025 03:23

I'd usually fancy going to see something in the theatre or go for drinks, or for a meal but everything seems take the piss expensive, it's hard to muster up the enthusiasm.

Dh is recovering from major surgery, my parents are very elderly and in poor health. My kids live at home but are adults and so haven't been excited for years.

The weather forecast is utterly bum from now until Christmas; wet and mild.

I usually like to have a few sherries, Christmas cocktails, getting out the chocs and mince pies but I'm on mounjaro and have gone off alcohol. I'm eating lovely food but it's all healthy and not very festive!

I'm going to write out a Christmas list of things to be done tomorrow. I was meant to do it today but couldn't be arsed.

SumUp · 11/12/2025 02:18

Definitely, haven’t been motivated to put a tree or decorations up. If I didn’t have adult kids coming on Xmas day, I would go off somewhere hot.

Woodlandthemes67 · 11/12/2025 02:13

At this point in my life, having facilitated Christmas for everyone for over two decades and enjoyed it, celebrating every other year or every third year would be fine for me now. I’ve just got so much to do in ordinary life that I would really welcome some peace during the Christmas break. Instead of which, I am hosting for ten, because my adult children are students and don’t have homes of their own yet. It will be lovely, I am so grateful for everything we have, but the build up feels like a struggle this year for some reason.

Touty · 11/12/2025 01:50

Not bothering with it this year.

DarkForces · 10/12/2025 23:41

Last Christmas was only about a week ago. I'm definitely less enthusiastic than a decade ago. I'm trying to find some novelty by going off piste for Christmas dinner!

Barneysmomma · 10/12/2025 23:32

Oh and working in healthcare means often working over Christmas so the ones with small children can have time off. And instead of winding down in the run up, we just get busier & busier! Sibling I'm NC with could never understand that & didn't see why I couldn't drive 100 miles on Christmas Eve after working for 8 hours! Sorry, rant over now......

LemograssLollipop · 10/12/2025 22:27

It's so over hyped it just isn't sustainable year after year not for such a protracted period of time. Pp point on consumerism was bob on.

I feel sorry for the people getting sucked into special boxes on 1 Dec for Elves coming having just done boo boxes for Halloween. Xmas Eve boxes, millions of presents for the mountain on Xmas Day. They say it's for the kids but kids can be be happy with a few lovely gifts.

Take the consumerism out of Xmas!

NoWomanNoRedRedWine · 10/12/2025 22:26

I have found my people!

Roselily123 · 10/12/2025 22:20

I believe Christmas is what you make it.
The kids may have grown up and gone , but I love seeing all the decorated trees in the houses, enjoy the break from work, the good food and drink.
We don’t do adult presents or any cards.
So fairly stress free.
I believe Christmas was designed to get us through the dark nights.
Shortest day/longest night is 23rd December, so Christmas is half way through the darkness, to the light.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/12/2025 21:44

I’ve spoken to quite a few people who feel like this this year. Just seems to be that kind of year.

Netcurtainnelly · 10/12/2025 21:35

Your far from alone.
Its only brainwashing since birth that makes people think they have to celebrate.
Most people are bored of the yearly bore and expectations.
You've only got to see the problems on here, to know its far from a happy time.
Sit it out, it will soon pass.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 10/12/2025 21:19

So glad to find people who feel the same. But sorry that you all feel like that, but at the same time, completely get it, and also, feel the same. I think the poster that said that the consumerism, makes us feel worse it’s definitely right. Plus how early it starts. I could get on board with two or three days of festivities, perhaps. 🫨🤣

ZenNudist · 10/12/2025 21:16

I'm the same. Dc are 11 (nearly 12) and 15. They want high value items like bikes and phones that are enough without buying more tat. I'm fed up of spending £££ on things we don't need.

I'm interested in advent and Christmas from a Christian perspective but that doesn't make me want to stick up a tree early.

Myfridgeiscool · 10/12/2025 21:15

I just can’t muster the energy to get up in the loft to get the tree down. I’m exhausted.
I've written one card!

blankcanvas3 · 10/12/2025 21:15

I feel the same way. DB who lived with us/I cared for died not long ago and I can’t muster up any enthusiasm at all. I’ve done the decs, attended Christmassy activities with DC, will be cooking Christmas dinner for family etc but what I really want to do is crawl into bed for the next 3 weeks and only emerge for a Bailey’s.

DontPokeMe · 10/12/2025 21:12

DC so have to make an effort. Definitely don't want to make the effort. Dreading getting the tree down and decorating it. Can't be bothered to wrap presents. In years gone by it would all done by now!

I believe the magic is lost to consumerism and it all starts too early in the shops. Nothing is sacred anymore - you can get a Christmas pudding any time of the year these days.

Merry Christmas! 😅
