To think night mouthguards are extortionate - are there safe cheaper alternatives?

Posting here for traction. Just been quoted £500 by dentist for a night time mouthguard becauae I clench & grind my teeth really badly. 6-8 weeks to wait for it too, all the while still getting headaches and jaw ache.

I did look on Amazon but there are so many unregulated products out there and I'm scared of choking in my sleep or ppisoning myself with plastic chemicals.

Does anyone actually use a safe, well fitted alternative that doesn't cost hundreds?

DH just gets the moulds and does them himself with a saucepan of hot water. He’s been doing this for a few years and his teeth are now fine so they’re obviously working.

I can’t adjust to having a mouth guard in, I had to use one for a teeth whitening program for three weeks and every morning I woke with a tense, sore jaw and a headache as I was seemingly clenching my jaw overnight. The Botox thing is interesting, DH sleeps like the dead anyway so is fine with a mouthguard but will file that away for the future!

I'm afraid I was about to suggest Amazon

I got one from there

I must admit, it hadn't occurred to me that I might poison myself!

What I will say is, don't spend too much money until you find out how you feel with the mouthguard in. In that regard, it's worth getting something cheap from Amazon to see how you feel.

I'm a terrible sleeper - had insomnia since I was a teenager basically. And I find it even harder to sleep with the mouthguard in.

The grinding tends to come and go. It is very bad and some mornings I've woken up with my jaw so swollen, I actually can't put food in my mouth. Though some might say that's not necessarily a bad thing! 😂

I ended up having a Botox injection and the man who did it was very good and taught me through the simple manoeuvre of where I keep my tongue! Like literally the location of it in my head.

I'm hoping I'll never have to have that Botox injection again. Even my NHS dentist said to me that that was the only way though. I think quite a few people have it once and if they work on retraining the movements, it does help

Wish you the best with it. I do know some people are very happy with the mouthguards that's been custom-made for them at the dentist.

It's definitely worth shopping around, I just picked up one from my dentist for 275 about 2 weeks after fitting.. That's still pricey and I wish I had shopped around for alternatives, but not as bad as you've been quoted.
