Just for fun.

40s= aristocracy
30s=middle class
20s=working class
10s=underclass

I always thought I was middle class until I discovered because I was 16 I am indeed underclass.

and I guess if you’re one of the few who became a mother in your 50s you are a queen

Working class. 28. And I had two in my early 30s. I have a working class background and occupy some hybrid ground between wc and mc now. Thank god I'm not aristocratic, I don't have the patience for small children anymore but maybe the family nanny could deal with that?

Coffeeishot · 08/12/2025 12:55

My mum had me as an older teenager she was marched up the aisle before I was born, im just thankful that doesn't happen as much anymore she had an awful short lived marraige then had "the shame," of being a young divorcee.

CowTown · 08/12/2025 12:55

Middle class. Which is true, as I did many “middle class” things before having a baby—degree and work placements abroad, for example.

CinnamonBuns67 · 08/12/2025 12:53

Working class and that is correct

I think this has changed over time. I had my first at 28, but that was nearly 50 years ago and was considered old to be starting a family. Definitely consider myself middle.

True one of my grandmas also had her first at 16 back in the 60s no one would of considered her underclass (obviously she was also married)

Nearly every day there is some mention of "class" on this site. In Scotland most of us could not care less about what others deem them to be.
It's a wee bit sad tbh and classless 😂

I’m guilty of being fascinated but in my defence I never thought about it at all until I discovered mumsnet a year ago, I always thought because I wasn’t rich and also wasn’t completely broke that I was middle class. Now I know because of the age I had my first child I am a complete peasant 😂

Working class. I was 22 but I live in a wc area, and 30odd years ago it wasn't particularly unusual.my dc are now in there 20s and 30s but have no children.

Justcashnosweets · 08/12/2025 12:43

Middle class 🤣

spiderlight · 08/12/2025 12:38

Middle class, but apparently I came from aristocracy. My mum was nearly 47 when she had me, so closer to full-blown royalty, really! 😆

TurquoiseDress · 08/12/2025 12:26

Middle of the middle, first baby arrived when I was 35 and a half 😁

Ohthatsabitshit · 08/12/2025 12:23

Proper posh girls have their first child in their twenties on the whole.

My husbands mother is old money, she and all her old money relatives had their first child in their early twenties, especially the ones who married up.

GiantTeddyIsTired · 08/12/2025 12:24

Started trying at working class, finally succeeded by middle :) so about right I suppose.

Ohthatsabitshit · 08/12/2025 12:23

Allswellthatendswelll · 08/12/2025 12:21

Middle and I am!

But really posh people have their kids in their 20s as they don't have to worry about things like mortgages and career progression. So the theory is off!

MorrisZapp · 08/12/2025 12:21

Middle. Every bit of research bears out that the more educated the woman, the later she starts having kids. Of course it isn't a blanket rule, and nobody serious would say you were underclass simply because you had a baby at a young age.

Simonjt · 08/12/2025 12:18

Middle class, but I would be working class when the oldest was born. I’m an immigrant, the UK class system doesn’t apply to me.

Greebosmum · 08/12/2025 12:18

Working class

InMyOodie · 08/12/2025 12:18

Middle.

InlandTaipan · 08/12/2025 12:17

TheNightingalesStarling · 08/12/2025 10:40

25 so working class.

The time was right. I'm now approaching 40 parenting teens not babies and I wonder how new mums in their 40s have the energy for it but they obviously do. And its their choice.

I guess it depends on your set up. If I'd had a baby in my 20s I'd have had no time and no energy as I'd have been working full time to put a roof over our heads. By my 30s (40 for dh) we had a roof and he could keep it on whilst I focused on the kids.

Sharptonguedwoman · 08/12/2025 12:16

Middle

PennywisePoundFoolish · 08/12/2025 12:10

27 so working class. I guess it's broadly right, only GCSEs, work in retail. DH is a tradesman. We have a mortgage and live in an OK area. I grew up in a very middle class town, both parents from quite tough working class backgrounds who got decent jobs and were able to get a mortgage and my dad retired with a very decent pension.

My dad's mum had her first child aged 30, which was considered very late in 1936! She'd been told she wouldn't be able to have children following a bad accident. Her mother was unmarried and was sent away after, and she was raised by her maternal uncle. If she was still alive I'm sure she'd laugh her head off at being categorised as middle-class!

RobinEllacotStrike · 08/12/2025 11:56

Ha ha ha I’ve finally made it. Im aristocracy apparently- where is my pony?

whatwouldlilacerullodo · 08/12/2025 11:52

Having kids in your 20s can either mean you're working class OR upper class (at that age you already have a house, income and paid help, so why wait?)

Pacificsunshine · 08/12/2025 11:47

Middle class which is correct.

I would encourage my own DDs to have children in their 20s, if they can. Children didn’t turn out to be less disruptive to one’s career later. And the benefits of doing it when it is biologically optimal are not to be sniffed at.

Octavia64 · 08/12/2025 11:46

23 so working.

definitelt not. Had just finished my first degree
