Does anyone have weekends like this anymore?

Friday night, got in, made chilli and nachos, fire on, throws on, pjs on, dh, me, dd (7) and ddog on the sofa watching films
Saturday, Dd did colouring in the morning, had pancakes, then her friend came to play, then she went to theirs for a few hours. I watched xmas films and sewed a top, Dh messed about on his computer.
I made lasagna and Dd came home, we had a dance to Christmas music then watched Home alone and bed.
Today we took ddog out to the woods, dd did clay, we made chocolate Christmas tree biscuits and played with her elves, played in the garden on the trampoline with the elves, had a roast, bath, fire, stories & bed.

Just been looking at Instagram etc and so many posts of visits to cities, girls nights out, santa spectacular shows, Lapland, London visits etc and just feeling a bit 😬
We will do a few Christmas outings for sure, but don’t seem half as busy (or wealthy)as lots of people. I remember lots of weekends as a kid being slow, but I was perfectly happy. We definitely do a lot more with Dd than I did as a kid, but do most of you do these kind of outings most weekends? Is Dd missing out?

Also I need to know how you get your child to colour for a whole morning because my kid can manage 20 mins max and that is incredibly good going from him these days. Those acitivities you mention would probably take up two hours tops here.

Sounds a bit stealth boasty. You know some people do normal things at the weekend. You also know most people don’t have the time or means to have a weekend you’ve described. You know the people you’re seeing on IG aren’t doing that every single weekend.

The people I see are doing it every weekend, that is what I see around me, so it’s no boast as they’d be doing it if they wanted to and probably find it bloody dull, hence my seeing if others do almost sweet fa on a regular basis

I wish families would do this more. The kids I teach are just so busy they don't get to just be kids. My cousin's DD
does dance, swimming, karate, piano, football and singing. Every weekend is filled with doing things once clubs are finished. Whilst I know they want her to have lots of opportunities she just needs time to play. To occupy herself as her time is micromanaged to the nth degree.

This is the cause of some classroom behaviour as kids need entertaining constantly. .

Springbaby2023 · 07/12/2025 22:44

Your weekend sounds lovely BUT I have a five and a two year old who would make me tear my hair out all weekend if I tried to do a weekend like that, not least because I can’t ship them off to a friends for a few hours.

We have something planned each weekend in December, it won’t take all day and it won’t be both days but I need to get out of the house with them for a good few hours else we all go mad. I might post photos on social media, this doesn’t mean I’m doing something all the time, I’d just never post photos of me making lasagne and watching a Christmas film (or my kids fighting, the endless piles of laundry to put away, the stressful dog walk with everyone bickering)

ThankYouNigel · 07/12/2025 22:43

YANBU. Your weekend sounds relaxing, fun and cosy. We do similar with our young children. It’s lovely to have unhurried time to play, read, eat and spend time all together. School eats into so much time during the week.

Jenkibubble · 07/12/2025 22:42

Ranoutofideasfortheelves · 07/12/2025 22:08

Why don’t more do it though? She has school all week, dance mid week one night, plays with friends or playground spring/summer nights, but winter we just take dog out and then in for dinner. Everyone seems to do so much

Don’t compare
Come off social media - without it gou wouldn’t be comparing as gou wouldn’t know

No FOMO
So liberating

MrsKeats · 07/12/2025 22:42

Don’t believe everything you see on social media media. Your weekend sounds fabulous.

Sillysoggyspaniel · 07/12/2025 22:41

You have one kid. You had a nice weekend. All wholesome needs met. Congrats on being perfect.

Tiredoftractors · 07/12/2025 22:41

We have (adorable but) totally bonkers 4 and 1 year olds with wildly different needs so frankly our weekends feel a bit like a sort of survival exercise/Japanese game show / test from God and I’m often quite relieved to see Monday morning and my desk. 😂 Yours sounds lovely, and I’d spend not a minute being jealous of anyone at Winter Wonderland paying £8 for a watery hot chocolate.

Last weekend we were in a city at a theatre, this weekend has been really chilled with dog walks and trips to a garden centre Christmas exhibitions each day, getting the tree, decorating etc. Next weekend, different city (for a special event followed by celebration lunch). Do I post sitting having a film night? No. Do I post our trip to the theatre? Yes.

Xmasbaby11 · 07/12/2025 22:40

It sounds completely normal and very relaxed. I am envious of the lack of chores! My DC are a bit older now but weekends were often like that when they were that age, just with a few more chores and probably a party to attend most weekends.

I think some families are more high energy than others. Some of my friends do an awful lot with their kids, but they still manage to keep on top of life, and they get their homework done etc easily. Whereas it seems to take us longer to get things done - kids want to get up late, need help with homework etc - so we are not a rushing round family. It is definitely better not to compare!

YABU because thst is the worst humble brag about what a wonderful family you all are I have ever seen.

Back here in reality, I have a dying swan of a DH so I went shopping in the rain, cooked a roast chicken dinner no one ate and then mopped up p*ss in the downstairs bathroom.

How do you know I don’t have any shit or issues?? I didn’t include them as the post wasn’t about going into those problems, it was about staying in at the weekend and missing out on Christmas days out for Dd

Lotsnlotsoflove · 07/12/2025 22:40

Sounds normal to me. This Friday night I had a chilli at my mums’s with my DD(3), my sis and brother popped in for a bit. We did some dancing and yoga with my daughter then went home to bed.

Saturday DH was working so me and DD had a lazy late morning in bed, got up had some food. Went shopping, ate lunch in Morrisons cafe with MiL, bought and Xmas tree, went home and decorated it - DD joined in. Then I made spaghetti and meatballs and DH came home, ate it went to bed

Today after breakfast, I cleaned house and cooked a casserole while DD played with her dolls/stickers. DH slept late then and did some DIY. At some point we had cheese sandwiches and a bowl of soup. Peppa pig on telly the whole day, didn’t change out of PJs til 2pm. Ate the casserole and then went to bed.

I don’t know what people expect from the weekend tbh.

Franjipanl8r · 07/12/2025 22:38

Sounds like a normal weekend. I’m not on instagram though so I have no idea what the alternate reality is that you think is “normal”.

Cyclingmummy1 · 07/12/2025 22:38

We did shopping, cleaning and ironing. I put up the Christmas tree and wrote some cards. DH watched the GP and we both had a couple of hours out doing our individual hobbies. I haven't time to go away!

Redpeach · 07/12/2025 22:08

Why are you looking at instagram if your weekend is so chill, just delete it

Right! Just do your thing OP. Why are you bothered about what other people are doing?

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 07/12/2025 22:37

I thought your post was telling us what a lovely weekend you had!

Sounds to me as if you did a lot, not boring at all.

GreenMarigold · 07/12/2025 22:36

Most of our weekends are similar to yours. Yesterday my daughter had a martial arts grading session and then I had my work Christmas party.

Today my other daughter and I helped out at a community event and then went swimming, and we all went to meet a neighbour’s new kitten.

Nothing glamorous but I enjoyed every minute.

PermanentTemporary · 07/12/2025 22:36

Those events are staggeringly expensive. I did get a Facebook memory that ds and I went to the ice skating at Somerset House with my sister, but that was 6 years ago. Who can afford that stuff?

I think you’d enjoy the Good Morning Mumsnet threads on here if you haven’t seen them. People do have nice plans on there but mostly it’s just quiet family or solo activities.

snoopythebeagle · 07/12/2025 22:36

Nobody posts their regular weekends on socials though, so you’re never going to get an accurate picture.

curious79 · 07/12/2025 22:36

Sounds brilliant. It felt like your last couple of sentences, saying your weekend was boring or similar, was a real plot twist!!!

MooDengOfThailand · 07/12/2025 22:35

No.
I don't think most people are out at parties, fancy dinners in restaurants and new sparkly outfits for every occasion.
As we circle back to feudalism - few people can afford it.
Only those at the top of the feudal hierarchy can.

FestiveFruitloop · 07/12/2025 22:34

Your weekend sounds idyllic, OP! Don't believe everything you see on the socials, the grass isn't always greener.

Nopenousername · 07/12/2025 22:29

You sure like minced beef

😂 Yeah, had a kilo of mince and don’t eat meat really during the week
