AIBU in thinking that King Charles' passing will devastate Britain?

If you remember back when Queen Elizabeth II died, how upset most British people were and how it caused some social insecurity as many British people saw her as a sense of strength and a rock due to her continuity and longevity, but with her gone, they weren't sure how Britain would fare. Hence, the large crowds of mourners and a lot of upset.

King Charles III - though not as admired as Queen Elizabeth was - also has longevity and a sense of continuity in a different way: not as monarch since he's only been in the role for three years, but as a royal figure, i.e. he has been in the spotlight since the 1940s and conducting royal duties since the 1960s. When he dies, will Britain finally feel as though the older generation of royals - who for so long have provided reassurance and comfort to the British people - have gone?

Will this lead to a lot of soul-searching about where next Britain must go and perhaps cause social tensions due to the insecurity of identity? Who will the British look to to guide the nation from then on? Who will be their new rock?

😂😂I won't give a single thought to it when Charlie snuffs it

soocool · 15/12/2025 20:14

Well even if they kept the privacy aspect (for now) so as to hide the illegitimate kids all over the place and mistresses and gigolos galore, I do think that the Grant of Probate should be made available NOW.

That just shows the gross and net estate. So at least we'd get a look at something!

I don't agree with the will sealing AT ALL btw. Another way of squirrelling it away and keeping the great unwashed from having a conniption at their wealth, in large part funded by us.

I'm getting rather pissed off day by day with all this. And why shouldn't I?

If William wants to make a difference he could pay his taxes like the rest of us.

He will continue to to be the king of empty gestures

I get the feeling with Charles that he has accepted he is King and wants to do good with it ( while still takingvshedloads of cash for himself) but with William I get the feeling he wants to he King and wants to do as little as he can get away with in order to keep that role andcthinks hell get away with it through PR and talking about his ' family life' and 'privacy'. I wonder what excuse the Wales's will give when their kids are all at boarding school?

jumpingthehighjump · 15/12/2025 17:31

I think the Will sealing is important. No one in the UK can seal their Will unless they go through a really expensive lengthy procedure and no one does it. It's a public document except in the case of the Royal Family.

It all started centuries ago when a Prince left a load of jewels to his mistress instead of his wife. They've been sealed since for 'dignity and privacy'

What about our dignity and privacy?

soocool · 15/12/2025 16:52

I wonder what their justification would be (if anyone ever had the cojones to ask!) for not paying taxes like the rest of us, and for sealing their wills.

Er, well, you know, tradition, privacy, - add your own excuse.

Mothership4two · 13/12/2025 10:06

They will end up in the hands of Airb'n'b "entrepreneurs". Who will offer over (what will an an already high) market value and then fleece them out to make more squillions.

Proving - if anyone was unaware - that you need money[1] to make money.

[1]Preferably someone elses. Which brings us back to the royals.

I really don't think they will. They'll have clauses in the deeds, and the leases.

I'm no fan of William, but he's not completely stupid.

I don't know anything about those 24 homes, but I bet that they won't be a freebie but will be leased to the Cornish homeless charity. Same as happens with hospitals, Armed Forces land and other public buildings.

You think Kate gets treated worse?

sorry, I misread! I thought you meant Meghan looks like the worse or the two.

If only there was a way to create conditions in leases, eh ? If only,

They would just exempt themselves from those laws as is

Wingingit73 · 12/12/2025 18:03

Queen Elizabeth was only monarch for 2-3 generations. All we'd knowm..Charles. No.

SerendipityJane · 12/12/2025 18:01

reallyffspeople · 12/12/2025 17:58

I’d be shocked if they even made it to social housing in the first place

24 houses , wow that should do it, Where I live we have around 11k on the council house waiting list, the boarded up shops in the city centre are now tent cities and it is the same in many other cities

Meghan in ways ensured Kate was sainted.

I'm no fan of H&M but Meghan definitely comes out the worst when her and Kate are pitted against each other.

Yeah, no.

jumpingthehighjump · 12/12/2025 17:21

There's 24,000 on the housing waiting list in Cornwall. The trouble is it's the second home/Airbnb with people buying them up. And unemployment is a huge problem too

Not sure 24 houses will cut it!

lifeonmars100 · 12/12/2025 17:13

Doggielovelouie · 12/12/2025 13:36

Only 24?? The mind boggles

that land should come back to the public
