AIBU in thinking that King Charles' passing will devastate Britain?

If you remember back when Queen Elizabeth II died, how upset most British people were and how it caused some social insecurity as many British people saw her as a sense of strength and a rock due to her continuity and longevity, but with her gone, they weren't sure how Britain would fare. Hence, the large crowds of mourners and a lot of upset.

King Charles III - though not as admired as Queen Elizabeth was - also has longevity and a sense of continuity in a different way: not as monarch since he's only been in the role for three years, but as a royal figure, i.e. he has been in the spotlight since the 1940s and conducting royal duties since the 1960s. When he dies, will Britain finally feel as though the older generation of royals - who for so long have provided reassurance and comfort to the British people - have gone?

Will this lead to a lot of soul-searching about where next Britain must go and perhaps cause social tensions due to the insecurity of identity? Who will the British look to to guide the nation from then on? Who will be their new rock?

To reiterate - loathe all the free loading, Chinless Hanoverian Twats. Only hope that someone is allocated to count in and out the amount of (mostly looted / appropriated from Colonies) jewellery Mistress adorns her bedraggled facade with. I would like to know how many gifts in kind re rent free properties / jobs she's managed to assign to her family / cohorts. Yup - loathe them all but getting away with sticking a Crown on mistress during a supposed sacred ceremony takes the biscuit.

jumpingthehighjump · 17/12/2025 07:00

Did people love the Queen Mother? I think the opposite.
Elizabeth, yes, because of longevity
Diana died in a tragic accident so yes
QM was an overbearing snob who drank too much and died in debt.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 16/12/2025 22:27

Many were devastated by Diana’s because she was so young very small children. People loved the Queen Elizabeth and also the Queen Mother so we’re sad about them. I feel sorry for Charles. He waited so long to be King and got terminal cancer almost straight away. I don’t think there is a deep love in.

I mean the thing is, shes married to The King so shes Queen. Her official title is Queen Consort as all the other wives of Kings have been. They were also known as Queen. Monarchy isnt a democracy. You take what, and who you are given. If they are on their 6th wife, all the wives are Queen. If the King is 6 years old, they are still King. If the King is collaborating with Hitler, they are still King ( unless they can force an abdication, cover it all up for 80 years and blame it all on some commoner). What any of us plebs thinks is of no consequence.

The establishment did say she would never be known as queen and then it got slipped in later and nobody objected as they had down a PR job on the public

nonody seemed to remember

Mothership4two · 16/12/2025 16:55

My memory is muddled - it wasn't the Queen's dying wish, it was her Jubilee wish 🤔

Mothership4two · 16/12/2025 16:53

Oh I agree @LidlAmaretto our wishes are of no consequence to them. Just think it's a bit rich that a song and dance was made that she wouldn't be called Queen, which was later confirmed, when all the time it was pretty obvious that this was a lie. I think the public are treated like mugs sometimes and unfortuately a fair number buy into their baloney.

"Clarence House statement 2020: ‘The intention is for the Duchess to be known as Princess Consort when the Prince accedes to the throne. This was announced at the time of the marriage and there has been absolutely no change at all.’" 🙄

Loathe all the freeloading Twats - 'come the revolution!' etc. particularly after the convenient wiping of collective minds that the mistress would never be awarded the Accolade of Queen*

I remember at the time of the "she will never have the title of Queen" a Royal reporter (can't now remember who) said "of course she will be called Queen C when the time comes". Then we had the guff (spin) about it being the Queen's dying wish. Basically the RF are quite happy to break their word.

@Giftmarse
Just head first - without a Snorkel - into Camilla's Breakfast Bucket Gin! You grow Gills ensuring love of the old, in Coutts debt Queen Mother plus ability to whinny, Buck Teeth like Red Rum and Haunches only ever seen on most rare of Stags - no wonder so popular with the Royals - talk about a Hunt! Leads you on wild Goose Chase whilst always being willing to be caught! However, you will have to shell out for used Feminine Hygiene Products as 'Trail Fodder', being 40 years past sell by date. Also, always take gamble re Double Barrelled Shotgun over being driven by (allegedly) drunk Chauffeur through a Tunnel.

I bet more people's lives would be transformed by the royals not dodging their bloody fair share of taxes

jumpingthehighjump · 16/12/2025 15:05

I admire Charles for his Princes Trust (I know someone whose life was completely transformed by it) but William being William refused to take it on when Charles became King. Why? He could have expanded it, given it a new lease of life, it is - after all - something that the Royals have done that actually has worked. I think he wanted to be in charge of his own project, but surely royalty is all about handing stuff down.... patronages, military titles, any titles.

As for the Early Years nonsense, just open Sure Start Centres again... Kate could have championed something like this with another name so she could remain apolitical.

As far as Earthshot, yes worthy, but it really has no effect on the UK and every time I have watched a programme or seen the awards it seems awash with celebs. Keep going with it, but go back to basics and cut out the celebs and up the donation money.

LidlAmaretto · 16/12/2025 14:58

FuckRealityBringMeABook · 16/12/2025 14:01

And Kate can fuck off with her early years guff too. Nothing against her personally but why not just give the funding to actual fucking universities with fucking experts with PhDs in this stuff, not someone with an undergrad degree in art history.

They have. There is acres of evidence about the importance of early childhood on child development. It needs funding for health centres, parenting classes, early intervention strategies, surestart centres etc. It doesn't need a Princess wafting round kicking leaves around on one of her 4 private estates telling parents that they dont need her husband to pay taxes they just need to take their kids to the woods. Shes talking to Royalists who will clap and overpraise her for doing nothing of consequence. Same as William. The only tangible things the Royals have done of any consequence are the Princes Trust and possibly the D of E, although thats just some middle class kids doing activities for UCAS points and paying a lot of money for it! They were both estsblished over 40 years ago.

Loathe all the freeloading Twa*ts - 'come the revolution!' etc. particularly after the convenient wiping of collective minds that the mistress would never be awarded the Accolade of Queen - as she was Crowned - she managed to grind her Fag out in handy Footman's hand (trained not to wince - Brit version of Kung Fu warrior having to bare handle Charcoal Brazier) when it was placed on her head by current Paedo "Head of Appreciative of Youth Charms". Luckily, she had another Fag behind her ear and lit with Swan Vesta - struck on her Sandpaper Curls which having been glued into submission by hairspray since 1962 given up the Ghost - not realising they were sentient / self aware and could crawl off and create a new society or preferably, drown themselves in her Breakfast Bucket of 150% proof Gin Martini.

I don't know what you're on, but can I have some?

Theslummymummy · 16/12/2025 14:52

Please provide a source for the claims "most"

And to rest of it- give over. He means nothing and does nothing.

I agree about the putting your hand in your pocket. I in no way a fan of Prince Harry but had a whole lot more respect for him in this regard when he donated £1m to a UK charity recently (the name of which escapes me)

FuckRealityBringMeABook · 16/12/2025 10:44

Whatever charities they set up there are already charities working on the field that would be better served by not duplicating efforts on the ground but just giving them the money.

Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService · 16/12/2025 09:34

Mothership4two · 16/12/2025 01:34

Their 'charity' work does stick in my craw a bit. Hey you multimillionaires, put your hands in your pockets (and give a decent amount) rather than asking the significantly poorer public to do it

Yes, it always seems so ludicrous and self-serving. If a charity whose work you value asked you, as an ordinary person, to help them find any number of ways to raise £1, which they so desperately needed... would you waste your and everybody else's time and resources; or would you just instantly open your purse and chuck them the quid yourself without any fuss, ceremony or PR-seeking?

Scale it up from the amount of money that a normal everyday person has to the obscene wealth of the royals... it's exactly the same thing.

Mothership4two · 16/12/2025 01:34

Ukisgaslit · 15/12/2025 15:58

If William wants to make a difference he could pay his taxes like the rest of us.

He will continue to to be the king of empty gestures

I've never been one way or another opinion wise on the Royals until the late Queen gave 12million to buy a woman's silence .
Time to revaluate what they do and their monies.

Not to mention stepping in at the 11th hour to Paul Burrell's trial. Still wonder what that was all about and what they had hanging over them?

CathyorClaire · 15/12/2025 20:35

They've been sealed since for 'dignity and privacy'

Yep.

Phil's is a notable example.

Liz has gone so why not unseal?

As an aside I would love to know how the 'penniless prince' accumulated an estimated £22m fortune.

Claradiplomatique · 15/12/2025 20:28

I’m married to somebody in a political type job so I have to pretend to care. Well actually, I just won’t say anything and just smile and nod.

Thankfully we live overseas so it will have minimal impact on me and it’s a good way to get out of functions I don’t want to go to.
