AIBU in thinking that King Charles' passing will devastate Britain?

If you remember back when Queen Elizabeth II died, how upset most British people were and how it caused some social insecurity as many British people saw her as a sense of strength and a rock due to her continuity and longevity, but with her gone, they weren't sure how Britain would fare. Hence, the large crowds of mourners and a lot of upset.

King Charles III - though not as admired as Queen Elizabeth was - also has longevity and a sense of continuity in a different way: not as monarch since he's only been in the role for three years, but as a royal figure, i.e. he has been in the spotlight since the 1940s and conducting royal duties since the 1960s. When he dies, will Britain finally feel as though the older generation of royals - who for so long have provided reassurance and comfort to the British people - have gone?

Will this lead to a lot of soul-searching about where next Britain must go and perhaps cause social tensions due to the insecurity of identity? Who will the British look to to guide the nation from then on? Who will be their new rock?

He is of no consequence to me. His mother was different.

Two words for why I have very little respect for C: Michael Fawcett

That’s interesting Mothership4two

Was it the OSCR 2021 investigation and findings that he had exposed the then Prince’s Trust to substantial risk in relation to uninsured paintings some of which were later found to be fake?
Or was it the alleged bullying or worse in 1998?
Or the alleged cash for citizenship and honours in 2021?
Or the alleged laundering of gifts in 2003?

that did it for you in the end? 😬

… there is so much choice, it’s hard to narrow it down I must admit… .

It’s a shame but I can’t even remember if Fawcett was involved in the £3 million in cash allegedly handed over to Charles’s royal aides in 2015 in Fortnum and Mason carrier bags by a senior Quatari politician!

Oh hang on, how silly of me, weren’t most of these alleged scandals investigated internally by Sir Michael Peat and others, and by the Met in a couple of instances, and nothing untoward was found?!
So it’s strange Fawcett ended up resigning so often. Really perplexing isn’t it?

Life in the Palace must be so colourful and fun! What larks eh?

😀

Of whomever wrote this 'hard work' nonsense, their definition of hard work and ours is waaay different.

Getting home from work at quarter to ten at night covered in bruises and cow shit with your feet having grown into your steel toe cap boots, having a shower and a bit of toast and crawling into bed, just to do it all the same day is a bit different to signing some papers three times a week or cutting a feckin ribbon.

Hard work my arse.

I mean, even sitting in an office all day typing things into a spreadsheet is probably more onerous and doesn't come with 8 months holiday!

PenelopeSkye · 08/12/2025 07:05

They are, in general, a dysfunctional family (the whole premise of being so on show makes it almost impossible not to be, the scrutiny over the lives of young children who have no say over it borders on abusive), who are still revered by a small number of people who think wealth and power are the only way to be happy or respected. The country did feel a sense of sadness when the Queen died, but this was more mourning the loss of a feeling- a nostalgia for a lost time, than actually sadness about her as an individual. Charles dying will not have that same effect. The media need content so of course will make a huge deal out of it. The vast majority of people will be entirely unaffected.

I'm interested in George and whether or not he has, or will have access to social media as he gets older. He might rebel and say F that, I'm not doing it, gimme a few bob, I'm off to make lucrative Tik Toks (or whatever!).

It would take a special type of child to voluntarily agree to a life engineered for his ascendence to the throne, especially now. I can only imagine that it might look boring and frightening to him. It was different before the advent of SM. But now G will see how the peasants live and he might like the look of it! Interesting times ahead.

I doubt it. They are groomed to believe this is their Destiny and they were born to it. It doesnt take a ' special kind of child' it takes a child told from birth that they will be King. Not to mention that they are also responsible for keeping the Monarchy alive and all the family money and wealth. His father could well live for another 50 years so I dont know how much of a Monarchy will be left by that time in any case. Hopefully if it does its just him and his spouse living in max 2 homes and not sitting on billions of £ while telling people who are struggling with the cost of living that all they need is the free things like love and walks in the park instead of things that them paying their fair share of tax would go towards, and being treated like their words are a great revelation to us all and proof of allbthe 'hard work they are doing behind the scenes'.

People are always saying the King and Princess Ann work so hard/are workaholics. Can anyone provide actual evidence of this? Three engagements a day isn’t evidence, unless you can show they aren’t brief phone calls or an audience that lasts 15 minutes.

All I know is that our joint nations simply cannot afford another:

£162 million spent on a funeral

plus

£72 million spent on another Coronation.

Not while our elderly parents are being treated in hospital corridors. We need to get our priorities straight.

I agree with this.

Spending on this level is insane.

This country is fucked. I had botched NHS surgery in 2017 that I needed two revision surgeries to put right. A procedure that was never appropriate for me. I got the first in 2022 and the second this summer. I have lost eleven years of my life to this condition and I am still struggling every day to get well and yet this level of money is spent. I've worked since I was 15 and had a 45 year career that ceased abruptly. If I treated a dog like I have been treated, I would expect to be prosecuted.

Some old inbred dude gets to wear cloth of gold and be driven in a gold coach with a woman he cheated on his wife with and yet we are treated with distain by the country. If the balloon went up, we would be expected to fight though.

Sickening.

Isn't that just because you're an Irish nationalist?

No, it's because she isn't a sycophantic twat who believes that the Royal Family are special and better than us simply due to an accident of birth.

Without their Royal titles and the sycophancy with which they are treated by the media, they would be just ordinary human beings who don't seem to be particularly blessed with intelligence, beauty, humour or compassion.

Seriously?

I beg to differ!

If Lownie hadn’t written his book, Andrew would still be walking to church with them this Christmas.

Not that much has changed in reality for him even now. By all accounts he is off to live a very nice life in Bahrain to avoid being extradited.

I strongly suspect there were also sorts of administrative hurdles, not to mention familial hurdles to overcome to get to that point. Especially when the person in question was Mummys favourite.

What the heck? 😨
Er nope. 👎
A lass from Northen England here 👋

Now most people who I know, cannot wait for William to be King. 👑
Most people haven't forgiven Charles for being a cheating twat to Diana, and saying he wanted to be his mistresses tampon (in tampon gate) 🤢
Most people see Camilla as a chain smoking, adulterous, horse faced cow 🐎 despite the new (ish) wedding vows 🫩

Those are not my views, but most of the people I know of 'oop North' of England. 🙃
Personally, I thought Harry was a top guy that you could go out for a pint with, then he met his wife, who showed a lot of promise.🤞

Next thing you know, the media were awful to Meg, and then she (rightly or wrongly so) went on Oprah, and then lo and behold... Markle the debacle, took the piss out of curtseying to the queen (his Gran, a.k.a the head of the firm) and it all went downhill from there 😫

Will Charles be missed?
Nope, not as much as Diana was 💯
And definitely not as much as the queen 🇬🇧

They are not 'workaholics' by any stretch. Each have been estimated to rack up the approximate equivalent of two month's full time work pa leaving them to enjoy most of the year as they please (pot shots at assorted wildlife is big I believe).

The ES prize isn't particularly well regarded by experts in the field of fundraising for climate change and spends far more on admin and glitz than it does on the headline prizes.

W's enviromental stance is also at odds with the destructive yet lucrative mineral mining rights granted in the DoC since he took over.

I'll give you the Prince's Trust but idle W has no interest in taking it on which suggests it may well pass away with its founder.

The York daughters 'careers' are mired in controversy with one working for a firm accused of breaching sanctions against Russia and the other working for a firm previously on the edge of bankruptcy and saved by a last gasp debt restructure.
Both continue to racket snd schmooze round the Middle East apparently glad-handing Daddy's connections.

Be a royalist all you like but at least look at what's staring you in the face.

This 👆 perfectly put @CathyorClaire

MoFadaCromulent · 08/12/2025 00:41

Very much dependent on what his made up feelings about Paddington are so the media can pretend he's just like normal folk.

CinnamonBuns67 · 08/12/2025 00:37

I think we'll manage. You seem to think we was much more upset as a nation than we actually were at the passing of the Queen, sure it was a bit sad but it didn't cause social insecurity and it'll not be any different with Charles.

Few people in Scotland care.

Agreed ,I'd think that's a shame for his family.
That would be it.

Mothership4two · 08/12/2025 00:30

It did go on a bit @Onbdy! I have heard people say they went to observe RF weddings and funerals because of 'history' not because they are particularly invested. Not enough of reason for me to go to any of it though!

‘Most’ people were upset?
I must have missed this! 🤷‍♀️😂 Most people didn’t give a fuck. If I remember correctly there were a record number of complaints to the BBC about the relentless coverage of her death and funeral. The royals are an absolute laughing stock and are becoming increasingly irrelevant in today’s society. I‘m sure there will be the usual nut jobs queueing to see a body of a man they didn’t know, hysterically crying over the death of a person they’ve never met. They will definitely be in the minority though and to think it will be ‘most people’ is batshit!

Now this is a really sensible idea. If any British monarch really cared for ‘their people’ they would look at the state of the economy, the NHS, housing etc, and chose to massively scale back the monarchy, put their fortunes into a People’s Wealth Fund then sit back and feel deep joy at the difference they had made to the lives of everyday ordinary folk.

I totally agree

I for one would give very little of a fuck. I would think, as I do about anyone Ive never met but heard of that has died "oh that's sad". Then move on with my day.

Pretty much.
Sad for the direct relatives and close family.
However the passing of someone I don't know won't affect me.
The concept of royalty is ridiculous anyway. Centuries ago, someone won a battle, said God told them they're in charge and everyone kowtowed to them and their descendants.

Witheringlights · 08/12/2025 00:16

2021x · 07/12/2025 22:16

I think KC is pretty realistic. He is the first monarch to be constantly exposed to the public feeling about him. I do think he was wrongly villanised for the relationship with Diana and he has been consistent on many things since then. He has also shown backbone over Andrew which is something I thought they would brush under the carpet.

There are some issues that come with being that highly public i.e. the issues associating with pyschopaths and narcissists e.g. Jimmy Saville and others, th very public airing of family issues and the alternative health crowd but I think he has been a decent public figure for many decades considering he doesn't really have any experience of being one of the ordinary folk.

He has shown backbone over Andrew?

We need to be a republic and use former crown assets to create a wealth fund for the people, much as Norway has.
