Using ‘myself’ when it should be ‘me’.

Or even worse…

‘I, myself, wanted to order the fruit scone’.

Just say ‘I wanted to order the fruit scone’ - it doesn’t make you sound any more intelligent.

Language is always evolving - words like "sick", "bad" and "wicked" used to have negative meanings. Amongst the "yoof" of today, and probably a couple of decades ago, they're used in the positive. I'm fine as long as I can generally understand what's being said - if I don't, I probably don't care what they're saying anyway. My main bugbear at the moment is the pronunciation of the word biopic. It's not biopic pronounced as in anti-biotic, it's buy-oh-pick.

I get annoyed when interiors magazines say 'she sourced it from' and then say an antiques market or a shop. No she didn't. She bought it, just like everyone who buys their stuff at IKEA.

There are posters on MN who will say stuff like,

"My husband enjoys cooking. He went out to the supermarket and sourced the ingredients."

"I am hosting my some friends at the weekend. I'll be cooking from scratch and sourcing my meat from the local butchers."

🤣🤣🤣

At the moment, ‘milk and cookies’ for Santa/FC.

Where did this come from? - as if I didn’t know!

in the U.K. he expects a tot of something warming, and a mince pie or two. Who on earth wants cold milk on a midwinter night anyway?

I think they’re fine but I am a person with an intentional elevated old money aesthetic.

😄

Annoys me when people say anyways instead of anyway and myself, yourself. It’s me and you!

One that has really been chafing my crack recently is when people refer to sex as ‘intimacy’ as though they have the same meaning. The reason it bugs me is that it’s often in situations where men are trying to present their (often post-partum) partners’ reluctance to have sex as a deliberate emotional neglect. Because that has nothing to do with ‘intimacy’ (which can look like anything from laughing together right up to sex, but try convincing these men to settle for anything less than penetrative sex in these situations and you’ll get short shrift). It’s disingenuous use of language deployed to make their selfishness seem more benign.

That and calling it ‘seggs’. For God’s sake grow up.

It really bugs me when people say 'two times' instead of twice. I've noticed it on adverts on the tv as well. How hard is it to say twice?!?

MabelMoo23 · 06/12/2025 22:28

hun and hunni.

I'm in my late forties, a professional woman with a degree and a career and two children,

I am no one’s hun, hunni or “a girl”

Sorry, was trying to scroll up and clicked it. I don’t know about these in particular, but yes some ‘trendy’ phrases annoy me too.
