That prayer to Jesus is inappropriate at a company party?

I went with my husband to a company Christmas party and before we started to eat a woman came to the microphone and said a short prayer in the name of Jesus as thanks/blessings for the food. Everyone was expected to bow their head.

This is the first time I've been witness to something like this, it is a secular company with many Jewish, Muslim and agnostic people. We have been going to this Christmas party for 7 years and it's never been like this.

I don't know about not being allowed to pray, but I do know that there are plenty of people who would describe themselves as culturally Jewish.

Of course people are allowed to pray. Just do it quietly without compelling everyone else to take part. I've never been in a work place where everyone has been forced to take part in Muslim prayers.

I think it highly inappropriate to bring religion into the work place. Christmas parties are for getting pissed and hoping Sue from dispatch doesn't photocopy her boobs again.

And yet, noone would probably bat an eyelid if Sue did just that, mention Jesus though.....

TJk86 · 06/12/2025 17:17

No other religion would allow this. Imagine Muslim/jewish holiday where people are not allowed to pray. It would cause an outrage. Or a non Muslim person celebrating Ramadan just for the fun of it would be seen as cultural appropriation.

You’re really reaching now. Sad.

So it's reaching to say that drinking alcohol is not usually ok in a workplace setting? Really? Hahaha
And with regards to your later posts, calm down love, nobody here 'prayed at you'
You're starting to sound a bit hysterical now, almost frothing about your hatred towards someone because of their protected characteristics. You think Christians have the worst track record with regards women's rights?
It would almost be funny if it want so wrong.

why does it have to be broadcasted to everyone in the vicinity through the speaker though?

In Islam its the call to prayer, no idea how it would ruin your day though any more than church bells would

People of other faiths Ive met tend to be much nicer and far more resilient actually, it’s always the Christians who do the “boo hoo tears, woe is me, I’m so persecuted, you must let me do whatever I want and listen to me harp on and on and on” crap.

Yeah, I dislike fervent Christians. I don’t care if you don’t like that. Can’t stand their proselytism crap.

Just look at all the right wing trad wife, remove rights to abortion, deny women education and jobs, shite that is coming from the fundamental Christians in the US as well. They pick and choose their Bible quotes to keep women down. Horrible people with horrible views.

Oh yeah because other religions are so much better when it comes to womens rights lol (see: Islam).

If I walk past a mosque or a Christian church and hear praying then why would that bother me at all?
Its out of place at an office party though

Maybe Mosques should be banner then because if you’re ever in east London around prayer time you’ll hear it loud and clear with no choice of whether or not you want to listen to it. But no one would ever say anything as it’s only PC to be offended by Christanity and no other religions.

It is interesting how many expect that people should behave respectfully while being prayed at. Completely disregardi g how disrespectful it is to put peple in that position by doing the praying. Outside of family homes (when there are no guests) and places of worship, prayers should be personal. There is absolutely no reason for them to be said out loud if the intention is not to pray at people.

Typical. Calling facts “smug” when you just don’t like them. Pathetic.

I do like the facts. I love history and the origins of Christianity and the symbology behind certain things we assume to be Christian.

What I don't like is the parroting of this ad nauseum to justify a hysterical reaction by the OP to a pre-meal prayer.

What I also don't like is that this only seems to be directed towards Christian festivals. A quick google AI turns up the following re: Eid:

Pre-Islamic Arabia (Jahiliyyah) had festivals, some linked to seasonal changes, pilgrimage (Hajj), and lunar cycles (worship of Sin/moon god), with traditions like feasting and offerings; Prophet Muhammad transformed these into Islamic Eids (Eid al-Fitr/Adha) by integrating monotheistic worship, charity (Zakat al-Fitr), specific prayers, and ending pagan rituals, establishing distinct celebrations following Ramadan and Hajj.

I don't crow on about this when a colleague wants to celebrate Eid or go on the Hajj.

Before you continue to Google Search

All this smug stuff about paganism, we all know. Congratulations. We all know that St George was probably Turkish (or even Palestinian!). Its just a smug effort to discredit Christians and show superiority. If you were the first to come up with it, good on you. But this is repeated time and time again.

Very sweeping bigoted statement right there, insert any other faith or protected characteristic in there and see how that sounds?

I’m an atheist and to me it’s not a big deal.
Christmas was originally a religious festival and there are some people who prefer to remember that rather than the alcohol-fuelled, vomit-splashed, commercial and chaotic money grabbing excuse to eat, drink and buy crap that it’s become.

You have said exactly what i wanted but, I couldn't find the words. x

Brainwashed ?

Don't you mean de-programmed from religious indoctrination ?

Set free from religious dogma ?

Broken the shackles of religious oppression ?

Escaped the enforced belief of fairy tales ?

Or have we learned to think for ourselves .

Yes!

- if they want to pray, they can, if you dont believe, you quietly just let the prayer pass you by.

No one is objecting to private prayer. The problem is that this individual couldn't resist pushing it on others. Why did it need to be shared publicly if not coming from a place of "spreading the word of Jesus". It's the spreading the word part that is unwelcome.

Yeah, it’s the microphone and “expecting everyone to bow their heads” they can fuck off with that!

Creamteasandbumblebees · 06/12/2025 13:00

Never understand why people who dont believe in Jesus celebrate Christmas, it is literally a celebration of his birth!
It was a Christmas celebration, a prayer was said. If you dont like it, suck it up and forget about it and let those who are celebrating the real reason for Christmas say a prayer.
Jesus is the reason for the season!
Merry Christmas and God Bless you x

Because we are celebrating the season you stole from us that we have been celebrating for centuries quite happily without needing any other reason. Hope that helps you “understand” Yuletide blessings to you

MySilentLions · 08/12/2025 13:54

hihelenhi · 06/12/2025 20:18

Nobody is "outraged", we just understand basic workplace etiquette and societal cues and that it was inappropriate in that scenario and would have made others uncomfortable. This isn't someone sat at a table offering a private prayer. This isn't someone at one of your personal family gatherings. It's someone on a microphone at a work event behaving as if her colleagues are her congregation. It has a "conversion attempt" type energy. Just no.

Exactly. Work or a work event is not the place for promoting your religious beliefs.

Whoknowshere · 08/12/2025 13:54

40andlovelife · 06/12/2025 12:11

But a Christmas party is esssntially a celebration of the birth of Jesus. Why is it inappropriate to honour his birth at a party in his name?

You are correct. It should not have been called a Christmas party. It should have been called a end of the year or winter party. This is what our company calls it as many people have not interest in celebration the birthday of Christ and they won’t come

MySilentLions · 08/12/2025 13:50

Is drinking appropriate in a work situation?
Basic workplace etiquette for many many years not to drink no? Or are some thing that wouldn't be considered appropriate at work ok at a work party? People will extend that to getting drunk but not a quick prayer? Odd,

Edited

You’re really reaching now. Sad.

This was in the US and it was called a holiday party on the invites.

Is this not a key piece of information? People have already asked is this an American company.

No-one will be surprised at this happening in America because they are more bonkers about religion.

Snugglemonkey · 08/12/2025 13:40

Genevieva · 07/12/2025 03:09

Are you offended personally of in behalf of other people?

Saying Grace and spreading blessings and thanks is a harmless, thoughtful thing to do. I suspect the Muslims and Jews there weren’t offended at all.

Anyone imposing proseltising at a party is not being thoughtful at all. I would be personally offended, yes.

I see it as someone saying "fuck you and your beliefs, mine are more important. So I will hijack this fun occassion and make it uncomfortable so I can feel like a superior religious person."
