I don’t think I would bother to rise to that with a response.

But if I did, it would be: “You say that a lot - I guess you think it’s a joke, but you can see how the rest of the family would find that offensive, surely?”

Mookie81 · 07/12/2025 20:51

Maybe she did?
Is there anything truth to it?

Tryingatleast · 06/12/2025 00:09

What was the conversation before? But does she mean in relation to him and his personality etc or does your dh do cleaning/ have money etc? As in was she just botching at the time because your dh helped out or is it an out and out I’d love to have your dh?! (They’re all bad btw but obviously her wanting to shack up with your dh is worse!!)

Shedeboodinia · 06/12/2025 00:05

Just use other confusing fruit analogies back at her, such as

  • the grape doesnt fall far from the vine
  • you know what they say about one bad grape
  • my brother and I are like two peas in a pod, or should I say, two grapes on a vine
  • well when life gives you a bunch of grapes, make a good wine

Just have a 'bunch" of these ready to go and confuse her with these cryptic fruit based
come backs...

Babyghirl · 05/12/2025 23:54

Just say his ex partners beg to differ on that one.

Are you the same person who just posted calling husband a coward but won’t say why?

I think you might need to put your phone and your wine glass down and go to bed.

Oh dear yes.

Perhaps her SIL is right then?

My former SIL used to say that my brother was perfect and that it was very sad I'd never meet anyone as wonderful. My brother was and is an absolute arse. He had an affair and she tried to kill him so it turned out he wasn't that perfect after all.

WallaceinAnderland · 05/12/2025 23:27

It's a weird thing to keep saying. Say it once maybe, twice if you have to but repeatedly? How many times are we talking about?

Alicorn1707 · 05/12/2025 23:16

without clarification of what exactly she's referring to, would something like this fit @Bell501

"I could agree, but then we'd both be wrong"?

TomatoSandwiches · 05/12/2025 23:15

I'd tell her to not worry, my brother is just a late bloomer.

Bell501 · 05/12/2025 23:12

CandyCayne · 05/12/2025 22:45

You might have to expand.

Is she talking about your family or a bunch of bananas?

My replies would be very different.

Talking about my family

Assume of the brothers. My come back would be “sorry you’re so unhappy, DH and I are happy. Do you want to talk about it? “

Needs work.

So she thinks they are all rubbish, her DH slightly less so. If OP feels triggered by this she needs to ask herself why. Otherwise, surely you'd just say "oi, I think my DH is great!".

You have no idea of real life. Being judgemental doesnt help

Why do you need a comeback? The best of a bad bunch isn't exactly something to boast about.

Exactly its cheeky

Iwantsandybeachesandgoodfood · 05/12/2025 22:51

We need more context. It’s the sort of comment I would make to my sisters in law as a joke. But then my husband and I also joke about the kids getting their annoying traits from each other. What’s your relationship like with her normally? Was in definitely meant seriously?

CandyCayne · 05/12/2025 22:51

Is she married to your brother or are you married to hers?

IsThisTheWaytoSlamMyPillow · 05/12/2025 22:51

“Yeah, just a shame you didn’t get in there first…. or last…” whisper that part and then leave it hanging midair.

Peclet · 05/12/2025 22:50

Your brother is best of you as a wider family??
Maybe you could say- “bunch of legends”

Bell501 · 05/12/2025 22:49

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 05/12/2025 22:43

You could absolutely mess with her mind if you said, “So you think…” and then stop as if you’re having second thoughts about blurting something. I mean, she’s criticising your husband to your face so maybe she could do with a bit back.

Class lol

Because she is saying that the OP’s husband is shit?
