Christmas cards to whole class

DS wants to send Christmas cards to his class. I know there are children of different faiths - is it offensive to send to the whole class assuming there will be children who do not celebrate Christmas? Feels mean to leave some children out but also don't want to offend. Don't want to get flamed for the question but would genuinely like advice.

Our primary school banned this on eco grounds. Writing 30 cards x 30 children is just NUTS. Never mind the expense of buying the cards in the first place.

School encouraged children who wanted to write a card to write a "class card" to all their classmates which would be displayed in the classroom. A LOT more sensible. Probably too late for this year but would definitely suggest it for next year.

Strange to take away a reason to write! The kids love sending/receiving cards.

I think it's fine, there are children of other faiths in DS' class and all are happy to receive Christmas cards, ds was thrilled to get a card at Diwali from a classmate even though it's not our faith he was very interested to hear about hers

PersephonePomegranate · 06/12/2025 07:35

How would you feel if your child came home with something Eid or Diwali related? Would you be offended or would you think it's nice that someone was sharing their culture and celebration with them?

3 kids in Primary school, 90 cards going back and forward, all to be binned in the first days of the new year.

What a waste.

Don’t bin them- cut out the pictures and they are your gift tags for presents the following year!

Give to the whole class, completely fine
especially if the cards are cute animals,
snowmen etc rather than full on nativity scene.
I have yet to meet a non Christian person who would get offended by a Christmas card, in fact have given and received cards from Muslim/hindu colleagues and most of them celebrate Christmas in some way too.

NameChanger20252 · 05/12/2025 22:31

You can’t control if someone gets offended 🤷‍♀️ Feel free to send in a card you deem to be appropriate. If any parents don’t want to display it in their home, they can throw it away.

lanthanum · 05/12/2025 22:29

For reception kids, it is a great motivator for some writing practice. Start early, though (but don't take them in until they're all done). We did three a day - and she started with the kids with the shortest names.

What a miserable school! Environmental reasons, such rubbish 🤣 When DD was in primary school we used to do class cards for all 28 children, including a candy cane or chocolate in each. All gratefully received and many other parents took part too. I did this as a struggling single mum - the cost was negligible so I don’t agree with that either.

Our school encourage it - good writing practice!

In the 80's I taught in a school in the West Midlands which was about 75% Sikh. I remember being a bit surprised that we did both a carol service and a nativity play! On the other hand, in the 2010's I taught in a school in Switzerland. We had quite a militant non Christian family who objected to us having a Christmas tree in school. That year it became a "peace tree" covered in dove ornaments. That lasted 1 year as the backlash from the rest of the school community demanding the reinstatement of our school Christmas tree won out and we were back to having a Christmas tree. We didn't feel too guilty as the original tradition of trees was both pagan and from that area.

DS’ friend in class is a Muslim and sent Christmas cards last year. Only realised he was Muslim when O spoke to his mum in the summer and she mentioned them celebrating Eid.

Send them!

AmberRose86 · 05/12/2025 21:31

When I was in primary school (back in the early 90s) I gave a Christmas card to a girl who was a Muslim. She returned it to me all scribbled out with a big sad face on it 😂

I was sad about at the time but I see now that clearly that attitude came from her parents, rather than her. My friend asked her why she did that and she didn’t really know the answer.

The mini Christmas cards I bought in the sales cost £1 for 32. My daughter enjoys writing them.

Yes we got a class pack for £1.50 from the works
32 cards

Money goes to charity too, my DS (age 5) enjoyed writing them and as a reluctant writer got some sneaky handwriting practice in! 😊

WINs all round!

My Muslim neighbours too.

I don't know where people get the idea from that anyone is offended by Christmas.
I'm an atheist. Doesn't bother me either.😅

Edited

Same. Literally no one is offended by Christmas.

Not celebrating it is not the same as being offended by it.

It’s just the flag shaggers who would have you believe otherwise.

Hcs1985 · 05/12/2025 21:22

Thanks all- think as many pointed out I was overthinking

Definitely send them to everyone, my children attend a very multi-cultural school, with friends of various faiths and from many countries- everyone loves receiving a Christmas card, zero issues from anyone over many years.

I have loads of Muslim and Hindu friends who wish me a ‘Happy Christmas/Easter’ and likewise I wish them a proper ‘Happy Diwali’ or Eid- using proper names of celebrations is not offensive.

Screamingabdabz · 05/12/2025 18:55

Anyone likely to be “offended” by a little Christmas card from a primary school kid would be an absolute knob and not worth worrying about. Moderate, thinking people of other faiths are generally pleased that religious culture and festivals are honoured and respected. It’s only miserable dipshits that get wound up by anything remotely relating to God.

justpassmethemouse · 05/12/2025 17:31

Aw that’s a bit Scroogey. I used to love working through the register writing my cards. Even now I have my stash to give out and look forward to filling my shelf!

Nah, it's not. Christmas cards are literally just landfill that hasn't been thrown away yet.

tarheelbaby · 05/12/2025 18:29

I know it's wasteful for the eco-system but younger children really get a kick out of cards at school. When my DDs were there, albeit 10yrs ago, there was a 'school' postbox and cards were handed out at the end of the day. So sending a card to every child in the class is a great idea so that no one is left out.
Do the big supermarkets still sell cubes of cards? Often these are winter themed so skirt the religion issue. At a minimum, everyone enjoys a few days off to spend however they like and probably with family.

(A few years ago, on a rack of cards with specific names, I saw a Happy Christmas, Mohammed! card ... )

Cherrycola4 · 05/12/2025 18:24

Include everyone, even the Muslim families at our school have advent calendars etc.

Tootiredforthis23 · 05/12/2025 18:22

Just send the cards and don’t overthink it. My kids school is very diverse, people of all religions send Christmas cards, all attend the nativity and any Christmas events the school puts on. Literally not one parent of another religion has ever complained (the school also celebrates Diwali, Ramadan, Chinese new year etc). I used to work at a predominantly Muslim school and pretty much all the kids joined in with Christmas jumper day etc.

I’m pretty sure the idea that people of other religions will be offended by the word Christmas was decided by some white person in a quest to be ‘politically correct’.

Ahfiddlesticks · 05/12/2025 18:08

You send them to all the class. I tend to get the cheapo kids ones that come in a box of 30. It has never occurred to me to leave kids out - you'd basically be doing it on the basis of skin colour because you can't know for definite if a family celebrates Christmas or not.

Fwiw, several of my Muslim colleagues "celebrate" Christmas, they have trees and presents and nice food and enjoy receiving cards. They celebrate it as a secular festival rather than a religious one (I think most non-active-christians so to be honest).

My kids have certainly received cards from some of their Muslim classmates, they've also received eid party bags off a couple, which I thought was a real lovely gesture and opened up some lovely conversations about the celebration.

I say this as a church leader!
