FiL crawling round on work video call

Am I being over-sensitive here?
I was on a video call this morning when my 73yo FIL came to get some things from the room. I realised, muted, said I was on a call and assumed he would wait until I said I was free. A minute later, I realise he has come inside and is crawling around trying not to be seen (he absolutely would have been seen). It was an external call, so not even colleagues I could laugh it off with). I'm absolutely livid.

For context, my study / home office is used as our guest room. This is not normally an issue. I had also warned him I was starting work and had to be on video calls 30 minutes earlier.

YABU - he is old, doesn't get tech, and no one said anything
YANBU - what sort of idiot does that?

My dm same age would have pitched in with the call. No concept of what work is and that video calls need to be professional, or what professionalism is.

I tend to move my desk into my bedroom when we have guests.

LT1982 · 09/12/2025 06:16

This is what video call blur/backgrounds are for

computergrandma · 08/12/2025 22:54

I'm 77 and wouldn't dream of interrupting my son or DIL if they were on a work call (or even a personal one)! Unless it was life or death, your FIL should have waited. I think it's worth showing him the video and saying (nicely) that you were on an important call to external clients and that they would have seen him crawling across the floor. This gives a very unprofessional image and could reflect badly on you. Ask him to please be considerate enough to allow you to take work calls with no interruptions in future.

If he needed to change his trousers to go out or to work in the garden, it's a bit difficult. He has to figure out everything he might want out of the room first thing in the morning? Not really very reasonable. How was he visible surely the camera is pointing at your face and if he crawled behind you he would be below the line of the camera sounds like he was trying not to interrupt.

Yes, I don’t get it either, unless he somehow levitated past the screen.

I do think this is pretty funny & even though it was an external call, the people on that call will have a sense of humour and probably howled about it.

I probably would’ve just switched my camera off temporarily.

NavyTurtle · 08/12/2025 15:10

RuralStyleless · 04/12/2025 21:47

No he's in mine. I think he was getting a different pair of trousers, but was too scared to look and actually figure it out.

YABCU - I would have just said, don't mind him. Scared ?? Seriously. Honestly - no one really cares.

Gossipisgood · 08/12/2025 14:25

I think this is hilarious, sorry OP. Bless he didn't want to disturb your call but managed to anyway & piss you off in the mean time. I doubt the person on the other end would have seen him crawling around on the floor. It's only if something or someone comes in to your space that it unblurs the background around you. Have a little word with him asking that he doesn't come in if he sees you're on a call & that once you've finished you'll give him a shout so he can get whatever he needs out of the room before your next call.

Oh this is like my mother. Knocking on door going "are you working"?

No I'm just sat in the study with the door shut at 10.30am on a weekday morning because I'm wrapping Christmas presents. Of course I'm bloody working!

Amazing the disrespect shown to the woman that pushed you out changed your nappy and held you while you puked. To all of you when you are on mumsnet in 30 complaining about your children and how they treat you.

Ooh - the love you have for your MIL just radiates through your post

All True.

SpaceRaccoon · 07/12/2025 19:43

What kind of a guest is loitering about in their guest room during the day - anti-social much

I think it's perfectly normal tp have a rest and reset in your own designated private space when you're visiting people, it's exhausting being on all the time or constantly in company.

BashfulClam · 05/12/2025 04:38

I any work from a different room as I need three screens so it’s not always possible to just move to another room. My bedroom doesn’t have a desk.

If I was working and MIL was staying she’d have to be booted out. She can’t take our room as it’s on another floor with no bathroom, as she visits the toilet 86 times a night I’d worry about her falling downstairs on one of her trips up and down. Plus our spare bed smells after she sleeps in it . Her house smells damp and so does she and her clothes and anything from the house ( I won’t ever tell her as she’d be mortified and upset).

Ooh - the love you have for your MIL just radiates through your post

MerryUmberHedgehog · 07/12/2025 16:25

He is your guest so treat him as such. Poor bloke.

Summergirl92 · 07/12/2025 15:13

Sorry, I was killing myself laughing reading this 😂 🤣 though it's actually not funny at all, I would be highly irritated and would have said something. 😤

A commando is a type of soldier. A commando crawl or army crawl is when you lie on your stomach and pull yourself forward using your arms, dragging your legs behind or sometimes using your toes to help propel yourself forward.

😂😂😂😂😂

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 06/12/2025 20:55

The way I hear people talk about parents over the age of 70 I find it totally disrespectful and lacking in any compassion. Wait till you’re over 70.

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 06/12/2025 20:50

Bruisername · 04/12/2025 21:50

Agree you should sort your background out or at least blur it

also find it’s not very friendly to make a guest get up and out and remember all their stuff by 9 either!

Especially an elderly parent.

SparklyLeader · 06/12/2025 20:40

That's hilarious! You may be annoyed now, but it makes a great family story that you will enjoy for years to come.

Newsenmum · 06/12/2025 19:26

Im sorry op that image is making me laugh so much!

Grendel7 · 06/12/2025 18:54

cariadlet · 04/12/2025 21:40

I get that would be embarrassing but working out of the guest room when you have a guest staying with you doesn't make any sense. Poor FIL is shut out of "his" room when you're trying to WFH.

I don't see why you can't take your laptop into your own bedroom if you have to make a work call while he's with you.

What on earth was so urgent that he couldnt wait though? Stupid man, I would have been livid! Unless the house was on fire he should have taken the hint.

DangerousAlchemy · 06/12/2025 16:56

Titasaducksarse · 04/12/2025 23:17

Put a background filter on. Unless people come really close to the camera you can't see behind.

Yeah this. I try not to ever go into our loft bedroom if my DH is wfh but he always says his background is blurred out and no one can see me anyway. I've definitely had to go in wrapped in just a towel after showering after a jazzercise class once as I couldn't wait til his call ended and needed to find new clothes & go out again to an appointment. Obviously I'm usually really organised but occasionally I do need to go in for something. Really hope no one has seen me scurrying around 😆 👀

ginasevern · 06/12/2025 15:00

"This is one of those things in time to come you're going to look back on a and smile. He obviously cares a lot about you and respects your work that he didn't barge in past and dismiss you, at 73 he decided to crawl in an attempt not to be a nuisance."

This. It really isn't a big deal in the whole scheme of things and he obviously didn't set out to maliciously sabotage your call. God knows we've all done daft things and to be honest this is pretty amusing. He's also highly unlikely to ever do it again. So OP, just move on.

Charminggoldfinch · 06/12/2025 13:43

I think your approach to guests staying is fine op. Not everyone has the luxury of having a home office and a separate guest room - and as guest rooms are less frequently used than other rooms it makes sense for them to be doubled up as an office (or any other hobby room you would like - you’re paying for it!). You gave him notice that the room would be unavailable whilst you were on calls - he should have taken out anything he needed in advance to not disturb you. To then further embarrass you on a call was not on really.

truffleruffle · 06/12/2025 13:37

Try to laugh it off and get a sign you can stick saying do not enter work conference

KilkennyCats · 06/12/2025 13:20

Kindling1970 · 06/12/2025 12:59

You know not everyone has a large house right?

Maybe don’t invite guests you can’t accommodate?
