Eurovision Israel

Think Spain, Norway, Ireland etc are right to not take part in Eurovision as Israel are allowed to take part . Russia was banned due to murdering innocent civilians in Ukraine. But apparently it's ok for Israel to do the same and murder Palestinian children... I do not know what kind of world we are living in

The big difference between Russia and Israel that seems to be passing a lot of posters by is that Russia invaded Ukraine without provocation, whereas Hamas, supported by numerous Palestinian civilians, attacked Israel without warning and murdered over a thousand people and took hundreds more captive - some of whom they then killed in cold blood.

Hamas could have stopped the war months and months ago if they'd agreed to hand over the hostages. The blood of thousands of Palestinians is on their hands, but they've played a blinder with their propaganda.

ultracynic · 05/12/2025 18:37

Just don’t let non-European countries take part in Eurovision, so it’s a geographical decision not a political one. Really bloody simple.

Meanwhile if Israel had been thrown out it would probably have all settled down again. What a shame.

I think Israel would have sued and the sponsor would have sued and not covered the event. So it wouldn't have settled down.

Moroccanoil apparently have a clause in the agreement that Israel has to be a participant and they have a deal to sponsor on that basis.

Eurovision are financially struggling and possibly would not have survived that.

I think the contest will, in the end, be a complete and utter disaster and may now no longer end up going ahead for a variety of reasons.

The non participants so far are Spain (big five), Netherlands, Ireland and Slovenia with Iceland likely to withdraw next week.

Belgium are wavering - it gets hosted by different broadcaster each year (for language reasons). The one who hosted it last year isn't happy but supports the decision of the other broadcaster. So it's not clear exactly what will happen long term there.

Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark all voted for the changes ( if they accepted the changes, it would mean there wouldn't be a vote on Israel's participation). This means all four are likely to compete.

Finland has since confirmed this.

The UK stressed they wanted the contest to remain politically neutral.

A delegation from Kosovo (who aren't recognised as an independent country by Serbia) were at the meeting, which is interesting in its own right as they've been saying for some time they want to join. (Because it effectively legitimises them).

The risk for Eurovision here, is if too many countries pull out, the semi finals become pointless which creates an issue with planning and viability (Eurovision is struggling financially - and likely dependant on it's main sponsor, Moroccanoil who are Israeli. It's debatable whether they could find another sponsorship deal as good, so in some ways they are fucked either way).

Tbh having been in 2024 and witnessed first hand what the atmosphere and tension was like, I won't be going again until this is adequately resolved. It's undermines the whole contest and the idea you can pretend it doesn't is ridiculous.

I am neither pro Israel nor probably Palestinian. I am a Eurovision fan and frankly this whole thing is going to kill the contest.

Yeah probably.

what used to be a fun night, albeit with political/tactical voting, is now just a reminder of how shite the works us.

very sad 😞

Meadowfinch · 05/12/2025 18:18

I think the UK should back out too.

Leave Israel and their dodgy tactics in isolation.

Regardless of the reasons for boycotts, it’s farcical to hold a European contest which major European countries pull out of to accommodate a Middle Eastern country.

This.

Israel is now a genocidal pariah state.

As such, they should have been banned from Eurovision.

RandomTyping · 04/12/2025 18:05

I fully agree with you. Every credible organisation, from the UN to Amnesty International, agrees they are committing genocide.

Seems like 49% of readers don’t agree with UN, amnesty international and other relevant world renowned & respected organizations? Mumsnetters always seem to know best!

redange · 05/12/2025 11:44

Does Ireland's 'bizarre' love in with Palestine and 'hatred to do with anything to do with Israel have some sort of romanticism towards a United Ireland. It seems totally illogical and miss informed to equate Northern Ireland and Irish unity with Palestine and Palestinians to me. Why do people on the left of Irish politics see this as some kind of 'justification' or moral equiv ency to virtue their own ends.

Oh come on, our own governments do the same.

Stop being one sided

CheekyChickenFucker · 05/12/2025 11:30

I think there either will not be a contest this year or it will go ahead on reduced numbers and be a farce (which let's face it, it has been one for a long time anyway). They will not kick Israel out for fear of being accused of anti-semitism. Even if the unfair voting practices prove to be true, they will still be too scared to do this. So I think it will be heavily reduced numbers (with the UK still participating, but coming 25th still even though there are only 15 entrants 😁)

I didn't watch last year. I'm just bored of the format, the controversy and attention seeking of the entrants. Even the final is far too long with too many entrants.

ScribblingPixie · 05/12/2025 11:13

I think it's unfortunate that Eurovision fans have taken it over and made it something other than it originally was, with the competition's consent of course. The point was to bring people together with music and a competition between composers via their TV companies. Politics wasn't involved eg Spain was a dictatorship and welcomed in. No flag waving. I'd prefer the countries who want to make it political excluded themselves.

Desdemonadryeyes · 04/12/2025 20:19

Proper lolling at Kosovo being given credibility if they are allowed to participate in EV.

NB. I think Kosovo should be recognised.

Ddakji · 04/12/2025 20:08

Russia were not expelled for “murdering innocent civilians in Ukraine”, they were expelled for illegally invading a sovereign state.

Can you explain why you didn’t say that? I mean, I know why but I’d like to hear you say it.

I do vote for other contestants as well if they are any good.

But you've already decided you're voting for Israel without them even having a song yet. You are part of the problem.

Coffeeandbooks88 · 04/12/2025 19:28

Why don't you just vote for how good they sing rather than any political stuff? This is one of the reasons I don't watch Eurovision anymore.

Well, precisely. As an actual music lover, I understand that there are now thousands of other songs, artists out there that will obliterate anything seen on EV.

It’s just a ceremony of pomp, camp, glamour and now politics too.

But not actually about music is it. Not like the glory years where you actually had a global hit win the thing.

Hortesne · 04/12/2025 19:38

Eurovision has brought this on themselves. Once they banned Russia they set up an expectation that they'll ban anyone else as long as enough people demand it.

TheignT · 04/12/2025 19:31

Forget the politics, just say Eurovision is for European countries which seems logical.

The protests and threats against the Israeli singer was why everyone voted for her (including me!). She survived the Nova festival massacre and managed to rise above all the hatred directed towards her. Clearly many people felt the same as she won the public vote.

I will vote for any Israeli contestants multiple times once again this year, as they will also be having to face up to all the haters.

It's a song contest, not a popularity contest.

Their song was absolute bobbins and I was shocked they got so many votes.

Slow hand clap for people like you who are ruining the spirit of the contest.
