To wait until he comes around for his parcel

It’s not the first time. It’s just ramping up closer to Christmas and I’m annoyed.

Over the last fortnight we have had several parcels for him which he never comes to collect, so me or DH end up taking them over just to get them out the house.

Last Friday DH took one over (I told him not to!) as it had been with us 3 days. I made a point of asking the postman if he gets notified we have his parcels and was told he does.

To my annoyance DD took a parcel for him Monday (she said the postman just passed it to to her whilst half asking /telling and walked off so it took her by surprise) so we now have a huge box in the hall. I am adamant no one is taking it over and if he wants it, he can bloody well walk a couple steps to get it!

Just for context, he is not physically disabled, or elderly. He is always coming and going (we’ve seen him leave and come back to the house several times today, so he could easily have knocked!) I refuse to go hand it to him!

AIBU to just keep it until he comes to get it? I’m being stubborn but he’s taking the piss now and we’re not his personal depot! DH says we should take it over on the weekend if he’s not knocked but I say no or he’ll keep just assuming we’ll bring it to him like his own personal assistants. AIBU?

I’ve had plenty of parcels delivered to neighbours and not been notified of it. To the point that we once had a replacement sent from the company, only to realise that, unbeknownst to us, our neighbour had it the whole time. I honestly wouldn’t spend so much energy on it if I were you.

I would take it round, tell him you’re pissed off with him not collecting so you will refuse to accept future parcels for him and if one gets left without you realising you’ll be leaving it on his doorstep.

Exactly what I'd do. Give him back his parcel and say that you're not accepting any more on his behalf, and he should make other arrangements, if he can't be there to receive them himself.

JustSawJohnny · 06/12/2025 19:05

I voted YANBU but you also kind of are.

Tell the postie/delivery drivers you don't take in for anyone but yourselves. Put a sign on the door if you have to.

Put his parcel outside and let him come and get it.

You are being way too accommodating.

AngelicKaty · 06/12/2025 19:02

@quietmagic I don't know if this has already been suggested OP, because I've only read your posts, but have you ever considered setting him (and/or his partner) straight when you take a parcel over to their house? I mean, God forbid that you should find your spine and deal with him/them assertively. You should just say that you're fed up with taking parcels in for him when he makes no effort to come and collect them and they clog up your home. Consequently, you will no longer be taking in any parcels for him as you find his 'couldn't care less' attitude rather presumptuous and he can find another storage facility.

Luckye · 06/12/2025 19:01

Just tell him to come and get it don’t take it over

Theunamedcat · 06/12/2025 18:40

A big box? Sneak it over in the dark and put it infront of his door so he falls over it on his way out?

Thewitchofeastfinchley · 06/12/2025 18:38

Is it too much trouble to take it? My neighbour gets packages all the time and sometimes forgets them, and so do I. I simply take it to him, and he does the same - in the rush of the day-to- day I often don't notice a note on the porch or the delivery email. Why make a big deal out of it? If you need his support one day, you'll regret having antagonised him for something so petty.

Filmouse · 06/12/2025 18:14

My neighbour had a go at me for taking her parcel in?!!! I think she was suggesting I was being nosey 🤣..Told the postman not to give them to us in future..a few years ago at my last house took countless parcels in for neighbour as she was always out until one day the postman said I am not going to let you do it .anymore..when asked why he said
I have asked her to take yours a few times and she's refused! Some people are just strange or dont care.

I’m willing to keep it forever at this point just to prove a point because yes I am that petty 🤐

I once had a pair of shoes for my neighbour for three months.

PorridgeEater · 06/12/2025 11:03

Don't take parcels.
If it is taken in by accident, you could put a polite note through neighbour's door saying it was left in error and you will have to return it within xxx hours.
Not worth getting cross about.

zingally · 06/12/2025 10:34

Moving forward, stop accepting them.
Any that do get accepted/forced upon you - I'd be leaving them outside his front door. If it rains, oh well.

Back in about September, I arrived home to find a completely sodden Amazon box on my doorstep. It wasn't addressed to me, but was falling apart. I took it inside and worked out it actually belonged to the same number house, but the next street over.
I took everything out of the destroyed box, and it was a load of computer equipment. EASILY £500 worth of stuff.
I put it all in a bag and drove it round to the correct house - feeling neighbourly. A chap in his mid-20s answered the door, and when I explained, casually went, "Oh... I wondered where it had gone... I thought they might have taken it back to the depot..." No thank you, or obvious appearance of relief. I'd just saved him chasing up a LOT of money! Not sure I'd bother next time.

Many years ago, I took in a smallish parcel for a neighbour when I lived in a block of flats. They never came to collect it, I never dropped it off... Long story short, 6 months later I opened it and became the owner of a very nice baking set!

valadon68 · 06/12/2025 10:10

I have had to have a word about myself about not being so uptight about this just yesterday 😂

Went round twice with parcel, left friendly note, have they surfaced? No! Can I hear them going about their lives indoors as though there is a sheet of tracing paper gently trembling between us? Yes! I think I'll just take it back to the PO after a couple of weeks if they don't come round.

Owly11 · 06/12/2025 10:06

I have all of my neighbour's phone numbers as we have a WhatsApp group. There will often be a post along the lines of

Does anyone have a parcel for me? It says delivered but fuck knows where.
I'm out today, can anyone take a parcel for me?

It's nice having neighbours that help eachother out. I know it's not very mumsnet, we're supposed to hate and be suspicious of everyone.

Yes!
I take parcels and when I see their cars pull on driveways I nip out and shout from doorstep… “Steve I have a parcel here for you!”…. Then they nip over and grab it… or I Chuck sliders on and run it over to them if they’re struggling getting shopping out or whatever.

T1Dmama · 06/12/2025 10:01

I’ve had parcels left with neighbours before and the email literally says just that!! ‘Left with neighbour’….

I hate it as then has to knock several doors to find out which bloody neighbour… so I have in the past just left it a few days until said neighbour catches me pulling on my drive.
Some of these delivery drivers / postmen etc don’t really care as long as they don’t have to carry it round / return it to van…
DD took it in, so let DD pop it over and leave on his doorstep!

Chickadee001 · 06/12/2025 09:57

JUST REFUSE TO ACCEPT THEM FULL STOP!

Andepeda · 06/12/2025 07:40

My new neighbours weren't at home, so I said I'd accept a parcel for them. Two men then carried a bed down the drive, they left it leaning up against the wall because I wouldn't have it in the house.

I was alone that evening, it started to rain, so I managed to get it into the hall.

The neighbours had gone away for the weekend. I'm such a mug!

HelpMeGetThrough · 06/12/2025 06:28

We had this with our previous neighbour. Parcel of wet wipes turn up and they didn’t come to get it, but bloody knew where it was. Buggered if I was taking it around, as I’d had enough of their sodding parcels.

It ended up being here for a week before I dumped it on their doorstep and refused to take any more, which pissed the delivery drivers off. God knows if the wet wipes made it to them or somebody swiped them.

Never taking parcels for neighbours again.

I have a lovely neighbour who I take parcels for but I ended up asking for her number so I can let her know as she doesn’t seem to read emails etc. He might not have seen the notification of delivery or it might be in his junk folder - are you sure he’s just being lazy?

Yes, I know that we don't always get our email notifications and we've had many a delivery 'note' put through the door with absolutely no information written on it. Luckily, we never have stuff delivered to a neighbour as we've a shed at the front, but it wouldn't bother me at all to pass some parcels on if needed.

BobblyBobbleHat · 06/12/2025 05:21

I couldn't be bothered with being miserable about it and would just pop them over whenever I'm in and know he is too. I really don't see why it is a big deal.

Planesmistakenforstars · 06/12/2025 05:13

quietmagic · 05/12/2025 23:13

I’m not taking a strangers number so I can text him to say he’s got parcels with me. I’m not a depot 😂

Family consensus now, we’re keeping it in the garage and all have bets to how long it takes him to send his minion over.

Edited

I am spectacularly petty and would hate this shit. When someone comes round, I'd answer the door, gesture to the hallway and say that you know nothing about a parcel and have no idea where it is, oh well, they'll have to come back when (DH/DD) is back, no idea when that will be. Rinse and repeat for all of you.

SpidersAreShitheads · 06/12/2025 03:11

I am in absolute amazement that people don’t know where their deliveries are or if they’ve been delivered elsewhere. And yes, there are four disabled people in our household too so all shopping is done online. I also have a cluttered inbox (currently there are 110,241 unread emails waiting to be sorted 🫣).

I still track every delivery like an obsessed stalker 😂🤷‍♀️

To wait until he comes around for his parcel
