Ban men from working in nursery settings

After yet another paedophile has been found guilty of awful crimes whilst working at a nursery, surely we need to rethink this. The risks are just too great.

I understand people’s concerns but this is utter nonsense… it would be like saying let’s ban men from being dads…

DS2 is a nurse. People with attitudes like yours really piss me off.

From when DS2 was about 4 he wanted to be a nurse, and he stuck to it. He’s absolutely brilliant at it. He’s won local and awards. He works really hard at bettering himself and his practice, and is a great role model for other males, especially DGS.

This case is absolutely horrific, but we can’t go round banning all men from professions. There would be an outrage if this was suggested of women

Men in any care role are dangerous. It doesnt mean I detest them, or think they shouldn't be there, but its a fact

A lot of men wouldnt dream of abusing vulnerable - but its terrifying enough that there are some that would, and then some that are able to

In my heart I worry about this, as my child is vulnerable. I think thats a fair thing to be concerned about.

And tbh men everywhere cause problems for the vulnerable. In the police and fire service, in each profession, women are vulnerable to harassment and sexism, and women in the wider public are also vulnerable

Irl though, men wont be banned from care roles

JustMe2026 · 03/12/2025 18:36

And yet some of the biggest news stories are mostly to do with women abusing children in nurserys and several are groups of them 🤔

youalright · 03/12/2025 18:34

Yabu most abuse happens in the home. Some children have no men in there lives being around male care givers is great for them

Galatine · 03/12/2025 18:34

Taking this idea to its logical conclusion, we would sack all of the men and employ Rose West and Myra Hindley.

Bushmillsbabe · 03/12/2025 18:33

The single biggest risk for a child being abused is the presence of a step parent in the home, the so called 'cinderella' effect. A child is 100 times more likely to experience abuse in a home with a step parent in it. It is not essential for a step parent to live with a child, so should we ban step parents from living with non related children because of the increased risk?

Its a difficult one

My heart is like 'yes, ban men from general society tbh'

I would ask how they came to find out about this - were there warnings?

Men in any care role are dangerous - my dd is non verbal and has a male teaching assistant and speech therapist

🥺🥺 terrifying

My heart goes out to the parents and the children xx

I would not put my daughter into a nursery or playschool that has men working there. I won’t even let my dd go to a childminder.

When I was growing the local childminder/ play school leaders adult son abused nearly 30 kids in my village spanning years. It was awful, so many families affected.

I would be more focused on the procedures and supervision that prevent any care worker from having the opportunity to abuse those in their care.

This. Not all abusers are men.

No. Boys in particular need healthy male role models from a young age to provide balance with the attitudes of Andrew Tate and his ilk. My dad did all the bathing, hair washing and drying, taking to school, preparing meals, reading stories, vomit mopping-up and comforting in my childhood, so I will always champion men as able to care for children just as well as women.

This again? 🙄

I think it's going to come up regularly, every time a new man is caught sexually abusing nursery children.

I don’t know how it explain it more simply to you to aid your understanding.

No I understand perfectly thank you and nursery agee children are especially vulnerable due to their young age and that personal care is required so extra precautions may be required that may not be necessary with older children unless they have additional needs.

I never understand this argument. Families are necessary to children in a way that male nursery workers are not to children who require nursery care. Also the demands and regulations upon a professional setting and business are understandably greater than they are in your average home. It is not reasonable to have background checks and mandatory training on everyone who enters your home but it is entirely reasonable and indeed important for nursery staff. That does not mean that safeguarding is also not important at home but it has to be different and as the parents are present in an environment they have control to a greater extent then they have when employing a nursery to look after their child.

Likewise you cannot expect everyone to have a food hygiene certificate and separate fridge at home when catering for guests but it is reasonable for a professional bakery or restaurant to follow those standards. Again it doesn’t mean that food hygiene isn’t also important at home.

And safeguarding is not about eliminating every single risk but reducing and controlling known risks. It will never be feasible to prevent all risks to children but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try to reduce them further or not make any effort at all because risk will never be entirely eliminated.

I don’t know how it explain it more simply to you to aid your understanding.

The main criminals in regards to oaefophile activity in nurseries are women.

excelkent nursery practitioners are excellent regardless of their sex. I work with a brilliant male early years practitioner. What we need is rigorous safeguarding measures and open whistleblowing policies.

How many female paedophiles have been convicted of sexual abuse in nurseries? I can't think of one for about 20 years 🤔

Whereas men make up 3% of the workforce and I can name 5 male paedophiles convicted in the last couple of years...

Coffeeandbooks88 · 03/12/2025 18:14

Why? The school nursery my son attends has a male nursery teacher. I think it is great. Male role model for some of the boys and the kids seem to really like him. Shame it is very rare.

Are you also going to ban men from being primary school teachers whilst your at it?

Of course the case is extremely upsetting and sad, there are also cases of women doing the same thing though. Predators find ways thankfully it's rare.

DS2 has a male nursery worker he's absolutely brilliant, incredible with the kids and well liked.

It's a parents choice if they are not comfortable with a male nursery worker, don't send your child. But it's unrealistic to think it's only men who are found guilty of child abuse.

Predators and child abusers are both sexes.

The vast majority of sexual abuse is committed by men. 98% of sex crimes have a male perpetrator.

Was this recently? That’s really poor, even when I went into nursery as a parent volunteer I had a dbs even though I wasn’t left alone with the children.

I don’t think banning men is the right approach. It would never be acceptable to ban a woman from a career path.

And what do we think about men in nursing, or elderly care, should they be banned from there too?

What we need is more rigorous safeguarding and vetting procedures.

such as

Nobody ever carries out intimate care alone. Nobody is alone in a shut room with children.

Everyone operates on a worst case scenario setting and does whatever necessary to eliminate risks.

Of course parents can vote with their feet and not choose a nursery with male staff as is their right, but I don’t think it’s right to just ban men full stop.

There are also many case studies of child abuse at the hands of female workers.
