It's unsettling common for people to admit to crimes they didn't commit.

I'm not saying that's the case here at all but a confession should not be used as a basis for a conviction, let alone a death sentence.

Among all the noise here, there is the serious question about how to treat people who may need to be incarcerated for possible decades until their death.

But just killing them because we can't think of the answer seems a tad defeatist. We've put a man on the moon, broken the genetic code, and are almost within touching distance of online GP appointments. Surely we can put some effort into a solution.

None of those “perks” make up for having to constantly look over your shoulder forever. The prison officers can’t be everywhere all the time.

If my loved one was murdered, it would bring me no comfort at all that the perpetrator would face the death penalty.
State sanctioned murder is still murder.

W can't go around hanging people because as a society we decided to be better than that.

If a fellow inmate hanged him of stabbed him, would I be sad? Hell no. Good riddance to him. But state sanctioned murder is not a route I want us to go down. Vengeance isn't a wise way to run society.

Talking about Robert Maudsley of course. A killer who should be given a long, long sentence like any other killer, but keeping someone in a glass cage is just sadistic, sort of thing they'd do in some of the most revolting parts of the ME.

You want him to suffer. You say it's right that he suffers, (as long as it's other criminals doing the punishing if I've read that correctly) how is that the mark of a civilised society??

Surely euthanasia is a far more humane outcome than the one you are advocating for?

Aren't some Gods quite big on forgiveness and repentance ? He may have a fairly cool God ?

He will have to answer to God for his crimes, and I don't know how he can ever redeem himself. He has tarnished his own soul, that is worse than death

Just came on to say similar. Add to that 23 hour lock up, over crowding, old crumbling prisons with poor conditions. There's a myth that they all have play stations. Only those with enhanced prisoner status can have one and they must save for them out their wages and can only be purchased from the prison service and are very expensive.

John Stewart Mill argued the death penalty was more humane than life imprisonment and offered the taxpayer greater utility. But I think we just became too squeamish about it.

If I were on a jury and there was a chance of the death penalty then it would be a not guilty verdict from me.

It's telling that the US states that have capital punishment also have to weed out peoples consciences.

Not the same. Im taking about sexual abuse. There have been 3 high profile cases in the last few months - all male nursery workers!

That's because people think they are reacting emotionally.

Of course the whole fucking point of having a legal system is to remove emotion and (try to) interpose some logic and rationality to achieve justice. And it comes as a surprise to (some) people when they learn to read that "justice" is not a synonym for "vengeance".

By all means, let's have a vengeance system instead. I've already bought shares in baseball bat retailers.

I am very divided on this one.

Part of me is in favour of the death penalty being an option for the prisoner. Life or death. Life in prison or go now, your choice.

I wouldn't choose hanging as the method though.

But if I had to serve on a Jury and my choice could potentially lead to someone having a death sentence given to them, then I couldn't say hand on heart whether I would still confidently find someone guilty.

What the fuck else are we supposed to do with these scumbags then? Pat them on the head, put them up at the Ritz and let them plant flowers and watch telly for a few years?
