This is madness. Can the last taxpayer in the UK please close the door behind them.

Well according to Awaabs Law if its social housing thats the landlords job and it extends to private landords next year

Well she needs to report the landlord to the council because they have powers to deal with rogue landlords

Absolutely but if her living conditions are that bad wouldn’t you do what you could to try to improve it?

Isn't that exactly what she is doing by going to college and working towards full time employment as a TA?

It takes time and doesn't happen overnight.

Absolutely no need to swear at me. There is not the case where I live. TA jobs are snapped up

It’s called working to provide for your family. It’s not a new concept

To be fair, she is as entitled to 5.6 of those weeks off as any other worker.

Hmm...maybe we should value what SAH/part time work parents do as much as we value work outside the home.

Eleanor Rathbone's work on the Mother's Allowance was a long time ago but imo still relevant.

I don't like Mary Harrington much but this article summarises the issues with Eleanor Rathbone well.

As I said you can do that but you should expect to pay for that yourself

Or she could work as part of a holiday club or clean the mould off /report damp to the landlord to get it sorted.Or become a sit in nanny over the holidays. Nothing in life is easy and there are things she could do in the 16 weeks she has free. Sh change tac and get a different full time job. She has this choice

You’d still need childcare evenings/weekends. I’m guessing your friends weren’t single mothers?

Or have partners who don't work the standard 9-5 and aren't back in time for evening work.

Oh i dunno A lot of parents on here seem to be happy to leave the children they claim to love to be cared for by someone they have no respect for or actively despise.

Yes and they are the same absolute hypocrites who will moan like fuck when there is a lack of TAs to help with their precious darlings when TAs start leaving in droves if they havent already due to these kinds of attitudes.

Well TA’s havent left yet have they because it obviously suits their circumstances.

But it isn’t the government who pays it’s the taxpayer who are becoming more disillusioned by the day. You could work weekends. Also if you are working full time you are still contributing with tax and NI. It seems like we live in a time where if it’s slightly difficult then people throw their hands up in horror at having to be creative.

I work weekends. I can't work more as my son has possible SEN and can only do short sessions as nursery.

JenniferBooth · 01/12/2025 15:58

phantomofthepopera · 01/12/2025 15:49

Where? In her damp tiny flat with black mould all over the walls and a few sticks of furniture, no equipment, no TV, in an area where most local people wouldn’t even venture into? I very much doubt that people would be biting her hand off!

Cheaper for the government to provide a small top up for one parent to be part time than it is for them to pay UC childcare care. Next year my youngest is at school and there is very little in the way of wrap around care so no choice but to be part time.

I also have zero network to help out with free childcare. We managed by paying for it, working compressed hours where we need to. Other friends work nights in supermarkets or weekends at pubs if they don't have childcare. Another friend does cleaning from 6pm in offices.

You’d still need childcare evenings/weekends. I’m guessing your friends weren’t single mothers?

Yes if you can fund that yourself. It is not the responsibility of other people to pay you to do that.

Who the hell is going to give someone a job for one week at half term, or a fortnight over Easter and Christmas? What about childcare? She has no relatives in this country.

Some people just don’t live in the real world.

Yes and they are the same absolute hypocrites who will moan like fuck when there is a lack of TAs to help with their precious darlings when TAs start leaving in droves if they havent already due to these kinds of attitudes.

Benjithedog · 01/12/2025 15:42

Only if they can afford it and not rely on benefits to do it. It is not the responsibility of the taxpayer to pay for it. It’s down to the parents to fund it.

37 hours on the new NMW, means that the FT worker is taking home £21,126. The PT worker is therefore bringing home £6,874 a year, which would be tax free and working 10 hours a week. Their maths is way off.

phantomofthepopera · 01/12/2025 15:49

Benjithedog · 01/12/2025 15:28

They could offer childcare over school holidays. As a TA people would bite her hand off if she did this.

Well as a benefits claimants I get way less than that. So I don't really see how that's possible.
