Neighbours have decided that myself and NDN park some of our cars in another street to make it fairer for everyone. AIBU to ignore the request?

I live on a street with unrestricted parking and few driveways. I know it might sound excessive but my family and NDN family have 7 cars between us. I can’t get a drive out in as the street is really narrow so I would need the space opposite to be empty in order to exit.

A neighbour on the street knocked on my and NDN to explain that our six cars take up too much space and means that:

  1. neighbours who finish work late can never get a space so have to park on another street and walk
  2. their weekend visitors can never get a space
  3. on weekends they sometimes have to park in the middle of the road to unload their shopping and then go and find somewhere else to park

We we’re told that ‘they all’ think everyone should agree to use a maximum of 2 spaces to use as they wish and any further space needed should be used in the free car park about 1/2 mile away.

Also that the two teenagers (one mine, one NDN) don’t need cars as they are still in school so should have no need for cars anyway.

I get that parking spaces are at a premium, and can be frustrating when all the spaces are taken, but I don’t want myself or my dc to walk 1/2 mile in the dark (or the light, for that matter) just to placate the neighbours when there’s a space available. All our cars are pretty much used on a daily basis.

NDN told the messenger neighbour that it’s first-come-first-served. I do understand the annoyance but don’t agree with the suggestion because some houses only have one car and some houses don’t have a car, so should balance out in theory, but obviously doesn’t in practice.

Would I be unreasonable to ignore the ‘request’?

Suggestions welcomed.

Ah that explains the need to tell others how to behave on a public forum. I thought it was an interesting question, so perhaps not so 'irrelevant' to everyone, but thanks for your guidance officer

You think asking the OP if she thinks that spending £5k on car insurance is fundamentally wrong is an interesting question?

Car insurance is a legal requirement.. it can't be fundamentally wrong to purchase it, so what was the relevance of your question?

I still don't get why you said you (and NDN) have 7 cars? Who counts NDN cars as "theirs"? Unless you were hoping that people would read it wrong and be outraged

If it’s 7 cars and op said her household only has 3 cars.. then living alone ndn has 4 to themselves?

I think because OP and NDN are impacting the on-street parking more than the other households, and the complaining neighbour 'targeted' them.

OP's OP was completely clear. It's not her fault people don't take the time to read properly.

I gave the total number of cars as we live next door so the messenger neighbour spoke to me and other offender together.

I accept that it’s unreasonable so I’ll find a solution. I have 3 cars in my household and will find a compromise that works for my family and fits in with the ‘two parking spaces’ limit.

7 cars??? That's taking up the whole street. Be a considerate neighbour

Is there no one who can read/understand a whole thread?

In a road with unrestricted parking it's first come first served. I'm guessing you have adult children living with you.

Well, I work for the police so you’re not far off are you! 👏🏻.. still, it’s irrelevant as I already stated 🙂🙂

Nah....my young adult won't want to walk either down a rural A road or across the muddy fields in the dark for 6 miles a day.

I think a lot of posters live in an alternative universe with schools, unis & workplaces right on the doorstep and/or served by a fully integrated public transport system that runs 24/7.

Fair point I have edited. However the OP was misleading in her opening post.

Which part of "but my family and NDN family have 7 cars between us." is misleading?

Buy far cheaper cars, don't insure young adults who would be better off walking and not driving for a thousand reasons, not least, saving aloe of money and keeping more dangerous drivers off the streets.

Yeah mad.

You have no idea of the value of the cars of the young adults. Insurance is notoriously high for them even on 'cheap cars'. And buying a cheap older probably less reliable and less safe car is frequently false economy.

Dying to know how you think people like my young adult son should get his workplace by 7 am - 15 miles away and no public transport.

How can spending on car insurance ever be 'fundamentally' wrong? It's a necessary and legal requirement.

Yea, that is definitely one of the weirdest MN takes - in a crowded field.

You sound like a nightmare neighours, way too many cars.

TigerRag · 01/12/2025 11:17

BoogieBoogieWoogie · 01/12/2025 10:17

So you/your adult children don't want to have to walk the streets in the dark but you're happy for little kids to have to??
I do think that families with young primary aged children should have the priority over your adult children.

Unless there's a massive drip feed about one of them being disabled and unable to walk far, I'd agree

My parents had this issue - someone over the road had 7 cars, wanted to park in the street and expected everyone else to park elsewhere. Parents put a drive in and now they have to put up with some idiot parking too close

Yabu
nobody needs seven cars and it’s only morally acceptable if you park the lot on private land

I used to live on a terraced street where there was barely enough room for one car per house. It was an unwritten rule and almost universally adhered to that we all had a “space” approximately outside our own houses and any extra cars /visitor cars would mostly need to be parked on other roads

edit- yes sorry I have rtft and three cars is not unreasonable though I can see it might cause some neighbours aggro (parking in our street is a lot harder since our neighbour’s 18 y o got his own vehicle). It sounds like you are dealing with all appropriately

So basically what you are saying is it’s not unreasonable for them to have to walk the half mile etc but it is unreasonable for you to walk the half mile?

unfortunately you sound entitled, inconsiderate and selfish all in one post so I voted YABU

PeasePuddingPottage · 01/12/2025 11:02

Bet some are used as taxis!

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 01/12/2025 10:56

I agree with your neighbour. If space is restricted then a max number of cars per household parked on the road is much fairer. I have no doubt you’d agree if the boot was on the other foot. It’s about consideration for others.

ZenNudist · 01/12/2025 10:49

3 cars isn't daft if you have 3 driving aged people in the house. It's not neighbour's business to tell you where to park. If your NDN has 4 cars it depends if that's 4 cars in daily use or say someone has work and personal vehicles they can still park on the street if they get there first but its frustrating if they don't use the 3xtra vehicles that much.

We have 3 cars and one isn't used much so we park it round the corner and move it around a couple of streets.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 01/12/2025 10:48

I think you should check with your insurance re deciding to park overnight away from your road in a car park.

I do think you should still treat it as first come first served. You having 3 cars when you have 3 drivers living in the house is not excessive. Yes, your neighbour with 4 cars might be taking the piss a bit, but that’s not you.

You could put yourself out for a couple of years while your DS is at home then once he’s left home (uni or getting his own place) you find one of those 2 car households has their dcs grow up and get a car which they happily park on the road.

How does asking if 'spending £5k on car insurance is fundamentally wrong', relate to ANYTHING op is talking about though?
