I think it is . Why make this decision at a time when anti semitism is increasing?

Herzog was a terrorist
Herzog was a member of a paramilitary group, Haganah who mudered thousands of Palestinians.
Haganah expanded significantly under his guidance
Herzog was directly involved in the ethnic cleansing of Palestinian towns and villages during the Nakba in 1948
Herzog was directly involved in moving Israelis into stolen Palestinian land.
Herzog was a key figure in the formation of the IDF and served as its military defence director. It's history then and to the current day is shameful.
His history is no longer hidden or diluted.
The truth is finally being exposed.

This really is a special interest for you. Do you take a similar interest in other Irish place names named for colonialists or terrorists or suspected paedophiles? Or is it just this teensy garden sized park in a posh part of Dublin?

I think the extreme desire for self protection is completely understandable, given the past..

I do think people have been confused and surprised that Israel, many of whose citizens know more than most about discrimination and torture and death at the hands of a genocidal regime, could act in the way they have towards other innocents, eg Gazan children.

I think that’s the surprising thing yes, and I do grapple with this frequently. Is it cultural trauma? Is deadening of empathy part of the IDF training?

Is it motivated by religious reasons in part- fear of Islam? I’m not read up on it enough to fully understand.

SharonEllis · 07/12/2025 11:26

@DontCallMeLenYouLittleBollix its antisemitism pure and simple.

I don’t know whether it’s a generational thing or what but I almost get the sense that we are forgetting just how bad the Holocaust was. When I visited Auschwitz one of the things that struck me was how modern and sophisticated it looked. This is recent history, not even 100 years ago. Can you imagine what that would do to a religious / ethnic group? This is why the IDF is such a formidable and powerful force- it’s grounded in fear and an extreme need for self-protection.

For sure. And That's a really good point about age. Its become sentimentalised with a soft focus on things graspable for that age. And the structural political side isn't the sort of thing you'll discuss with younger kids.

Yea same as. I mean I always found it horrifying as a child but it was the visit to Auschwitz and more adult focused literature (eg Frankl’s book) that really shook me.

DontCallMeLenYouLittleBollix · 07/12/2025 11:18

I'm always rather surprised that people are so keen to make comparisons between the Holocaust and Gaza, simply because it's so spectacularly obvious and indisputable that nothing is like industrial genocide other than industrial genocide. Even if one were to take the criticisms of Israel at the absolute highest, believe every stat coming from Hamas etc, it's simply not even close. I mean, imagine how much less awful the Holocaust would've been had it only been killing at a rate of 30,000 a year. If the Jews and Roma had emerged from it with more people than they started, instead of less!

It also invites the point that in the current iteration of the conflict, the thing most directly comparable to the Holocaust is in fact the Nova festival attack. Killing hundreds of people in a few hours mostly with bullets is exactly how the Nazis murdered the Jews of the ex-USSR. It's like the Babi Yar massacre, similar hourly rate even. Very Holocaust of bullets.

And it's not like there aren't loads of other analogies you can use, that don't inevitably end up being countered in such an inconvenient manner.

My point was in differentiating theirs from the actions of Nazis and providing a context rather than an excuse.

I think its maybe because its taught to children in school before they are old enough to properly understand the scale, context and importance of it. I know I wasn't able to until in my twenties or thirties. Anyone making a direct comparison between Israels current actions and the Holocaust really, really doesn't get it.

Ironically, it’s actually dissimilar because of what the Nazis did.

The Jews are probably the most persecuted group in history, with discrimination dating back 1000s of years. Nazisim is the pinnacle of this, with, as I’ve previously stated, entire populations of Jews disappearing from countries.

The idea of Israel as a safe haven for Jews is founded on this history. Does this justify the current conflict? No. Does it differentiate the situation from that of Nazi Europe? Hugely.

Oh yes, just like the slaughter of entire communities in Gaza.

70,000 people have been killed in the Gazan conflict - mainly bombing . Far too many . Criticise Netanyahu for that ( not people who are long dead and buried)
Millions of Jewish families across all of Europe were were worked as slaves in concentration camps and herded into gas chambers and slaughtered if they were of no use.
You are sick and deluded to equate the two events.

So like, if Ireland qualify for the World Cup are they going to boycott it? Likely a moot point.

There is a C of Ireland Church on Zion Road, thats why the road is called that. Not because of the Jewish school which is on the same road.

Eejits with their football matches, every time they run one the Jewish community stay away from the park. Playground is currently under construction anyway so won't be too many kids there tomorrow. And rain is forecast.

Ah OK. I didn’t realise that. My points about the other types of commemoration still stand.

The Nazis promoted anti-Semitic ideologies.
You are being deliberately ignorant and offensive.
( they also slaughtered entire Jewish communities in gas chambers and attempted a real and planned “genocide “)

What Israel is doing is not at all similar to what the Nazis did and you're making yourself look more and more ignorant. Its actually very possible to criticize Israel without resorting to this. Herzog actually fought against the Nazis and was involved in the liberation of Bergen- Belsen.
Just look it up, apologise, choose your words more carefully in future, or live with the accusations of antisemitism you're rightly getting on here.

Well you obviously do as You have posted a string of antisemitic statements which you apparently feel justified to do so you obviously think its socially acceptable.

I did not post anything that was antisemitic. Andi Zionism yes but not antisemitic.

‘the Gaza trouble’ wow. That’s some under statement right there.

The Gaza trouble like the Irish problem or the Indian problem.

Pesky natives causing trouble for the colonial rulers.

Not a Nazi. For reasons that are quite obvious. Look it up if you can be bothered to not post antisemitic crap out of ignorance.
