Is the renaming of Dublin’s Herzog Park antisemitic?

I think it is . Why make this decision at a time when anti semitism is increasing?

I think that’s because it’s part of the Western world @SharonEllis. It’s closer to home in that sense. US news is absolutely huge too, Russia/Ukraine etc. And not many on MN support Russia or Trump so less controversial here too?

So it’s human nature I think. Doesn’t cover anyone in glory though, the way we’re all so self-obsessed.

I think you will find overall it is Israel 'that has been put under the microscope more than any other nation on MN' over the past two + years.
Absolutely they have for their war crimes and potential genocide would be strange and concerning if they weren't.

Even if you accept war crimes committed by Israel (Which I do) or genocide (which I dont) here are war crimes and genocide in many other parts of the world with NOTHING LIKEthe attention that Israel gets either in Ireland, the UN or lretty much anywhere else Thats the fucking point.

Irish state's active decision be be at the forefront of criticism of Israel though
Which is not antisemitic. Should everyone just say nothing when they see war crimes taking place. Give over you are now equating criticism of the Israel government with antisemitism thought that was antisemitic.

I have zero issue with the Irish governments stance on the actions of the Israeli government in Gaza and the west Bank and maybe they were one of the first to be vocal about it but they were certainly not the last.

Oh for gods sake, really? Again we go though this?? Criticism of Israel is not automatically antisemitic. Of course it isnt. Nobody ctiticises the Israeli government more than Israelis.

But you can't say criticism of the Israeli government 'isnt antisemitic'. That's ridiculous. It often IS motivated by antisemitism. If the only foreign country you bang on about is Israel, you are almost certainly antisemitic. If you see only Israel to blame for the conflict you are antisemitic. If you accuse people who express support for Israel as being paid by the Israeli government you are using antisemitic tropes and you might want to check what antisemitic propaganda you are consuming.

And, by the way, Rachel.Moiselle is also pretty critical of the Israeli government. It doesn't stop her being able to recognise antisemitic criticism of Israel and separate it out from non racist criticism.

And anyway, that wasnt the point I was making. I was talking about why Ireland had a high profile in this debate. Its not because of Self-hating Irish people, as Rachel has been characterised.

No genocide has taken place.

As far as anti semitism is concerned the fact that the Irish Government had to step in over the proposed renaming of Herzog Park illustrated the concerns at high level about antisemitism in Ireland.

I've been listening, very closely.

I'm sorry that you had a difficult experience abroad. Prejudice is always hurtful and upsetting and its always unfair when ordinary citizens are held responsible for the actions of their government. Those Israelis have probably experienced it time and time again themselves. Many Jews and Israelis are actively self censoring, hiding their identity and simply not going to places where they know they will be harassed.

None of that is the result of a PhD student whose written a few articles exaggerating the Irish state's active decision be be at the forefront of criticism of Israel though. We're all agreed now that Moisrlle's documentation of antisemitism in Ireland is broadly fair and accurate. Choices about foreign & domestic policy have been the Irish government's choice, and brought them to higher prominence. Whether its Higgins disgraceful behaviour, the Occupied territories bill, intervening in the ICJ case, being one of the last to adopt the IHRA definition, and one of the first to pull out of Eurovision (obvs not directly the governmebt in this case). People can't not criticise Irish policy, politicians and citizens because someone might, unjustifiably, be prejudiced against ordinary Irish citizens.

If there are videos of UK people celebrating in the streets on Oct 7th, you'd think they'd be more worried about their own country tbh.

I can assure you that in the UK we are up against both the lily livered government and, in many cases the police e.g. the Met in London and West Midlands Police, in trying to combat antisemitism here.

HappyFace2025 · 10/01/2026 13:45

Boolabus · 10/01/2026 11:33

As ever the obsessive oversentivity about criticism of Ireland seems more important than concern for the Irish community which undoubtedly and unequivocally has real concerns about antisemitism in Ireland from the very top, the President, to minor politicians to wider society.
Absolutely not true. Ireland has been put under the microscope more than any other nation on mumsnet so people get defensive, the focus is disproportionate and has a sniff of anti Irish about it, which coming from a UK platform hits a nerve. What is generally not happening is posters disagreeing there is a problem and acknowledging something needs to be done about it.

Google Ireland antisemitism and see how many articles and posts are out there on it more than anywhere else, is that deserved? Are we that much worse than anywhere else to warrant this massive international focus on our antisemitism problem?

You obviously haven't listened to a thing people have said if you've only now come to that conclusion.

One thing that has really upset me about all of this hyper focus on Ireland is how it plays out in the real world. I wasn't going to share this story but I have decided I will. Me and family were on holiday in a European city over the summer. We were on a guided tour there was just two groups us and a group of adults. Tour guide breaking the ice asked us all where we were from. We said Ireland other group Israeli. They tutted turned away and said I'm sure you'll understand why we won't want to engage with you. We were so embarrassed and upset my teenage kids really embarrassed and thought they'd done something wrong. This is what happens when you smear a nation of people without context. I was sad for us but also sad for the Israelis that they felt we were that horrid a friendly chit chat on a guided tour was not possible. The super focus on Ireland and what is being said about Ireland and how Irish people are being portrayed and some of the exaggerated claims Rachel has made fuel an anti Irish rhetoric which has consequences. That is very different to most people's wish to address and bring to focus antisemitism in Ireland. Surely it's about building bridges and understanding not about pulling people further apart.

Well this turn took an unexpected turn. On the one hand so much concern for Ireland's reputation. On the other trashing Ireland's democractic structures and dismissing the significance of its publicly elected representatives in its capital City. Ok, very interesting. I always thought Ireland was quite a healthy democracy.

No idea what those now deleted posts said but in answer to your query
I always thought Ireland was quite a healthy democracy
Ireland does rank quite high on the democracy indicators. We do though have a very centralised system of government and imo there does need to be more effort to devolve powers to more regional and local structures. As a result voter turn out for local elections tends to be quite low in comparison to general elections unless there's a particular local issue exercising people. It also means the calibre of some local councillors can be quite poor and inexperienced, many career politicians or more experienced professional candidates would use it as a platform to central government so can move on quite quickly.

OpheliaIsntMad · 10/01/2026 13:01

@Boolabus
@Boolabusdon’t disagree with any of that. It must have been an upsetting experience.
Meant to add-
The only thing I disagree with is your blaming Rachel for reporting the issue.
It’s the denial of the issue that has made it worse

Have you started a thread on it? That's what I queried. If you haven't I'm not spreading an untruth I am highlighting the disproportionate focus on Ireland.

Ireland is responsible for apportioning its own bias, as is any other country.

You only have to look at the Eurovision song contest for a preview of how hostile the feelings towards jews are, not to mention Glasto. As with all countries, there are good and bad eggs. It gets quite tedious when the I'm anti Zio phrase is used.

Yes - good and bad in all countries. But if the good people remain silent the racists and antisemites win.

It’s okay to be concerned about how your country is represented or misrepresented on the world stage as well as being very concerned about tackling anti-semitism here. It is normal to worry about several things at once. You’re extrapolating from a discussion thread to say that the former is more important to people than the latter? Not at all fair. Meaning gets twisted on here.

Rachel’s words you posted upthread are indeed damning as @Boolabus said. There is clearly much work to do.

Thank you for acknowledging that Ireland needs to address the antisemitism highlighted by Rachel Moiselle.
The UK also has a significant problem as do most countries in Europe.

Minimise minimise minimise. Jews ARE being victimised, harassed and pursued by MANY people, including those in power, whether formally or currently. Maybe it's time to jog memories of a certain minister, who quickly deleted his antisemitic tweet after Jewish kids were kicked off a flight. Let's also not forget the current chief constable of West Mids police, who's facing an inquisition over his handling of the Villa football match. Whether it's full on antisemitism or appeasing other communities, it's ALWAYS at the expense of Jews. Hmmmm...the BS on these threads is always off the scale.

You do seem to have a passion for minimising this issue. At the end of the day I will listen to Jews and their allies.

Hear hear Sharon. Well played on finding evidence of what you've been saying all along, despite the desperate attempts to discredit you. Those attempts speak volumes. Semantics about phrases you've used with regards quantification, seems to be the new way of minimising antisemitism and haven't we seen MANY ways on this forum.
