To refuse to pay this nursery charge

2 children in nursery. Been really happy there. A few niggles but nothing major. This month's bill had a £40 per child charge for an activity that they only do in winter. It usually kicks in in December through to April but this time they've charged it early. The issue is that they've not actually done the activity yet. I spoke to the manager about it and she was very abrasive and came out with some absolute nonsense about why it was on the bill. She lied and expected me to just suck it up. I'm livid but the conversation is over as far as she's concerned and if I push it any further, I risk being asked to leave. Do I just write it off for the sake of peace and my blood pressure?

OP posts:

I'm not sure how I can explain it any clearer than I already have.

You really haven’t been clear from the beginning.

Jeronnemo · 29/11/2025 08:34

Neither. I'm just beyond frustrated at how willfully people are misunderstanding my situation.

Your posts are incredibly confusing, that's why 😂
I'm giving myself an headache trying to fathom out all your comments and it's not much clearer when you use the "see all OP posts" option lol. So can totally see why the nursery got a bit WTF?! They're probably confused as well.
So you usually do an activity in November, it hasn't happened but you've still been billed for it?
If that's the case then not much really you can do until the rest of the winter activity months finish and tally up how many activity sessions has actually happened and how many payments you've made. Then query and ask for a refund if you've paid too much.
If it's not happening until December though, it ain't December yet. Maybe they need the payment upfront this year to pay suppliers or whatever this time, regardless of what happened before.
So long story short, YABU to ask for a refund so early and confuzzling everyone including the nursery by the sounds of it 😬

PinkTonic · 29/11/2025 12:28

The situation wasn’t unclear at all and I think all this “oh well if 30 of us don’t understand it’s clearly you” is a load of bollocks. All it takes is one disingenuous ‘misunderstanding’ and everyone piles on.

There should be a clear answer to why the charge is on the November bill. If they had changed to charging a month in advance for the extra activity, notice would have been reasonable. I’m mostly shocked at the fear that challenging an unjustified extra charge would lead to the children’s places being removed. What a racket!

BillieWiper · 29/11/2025 12:26

Ok so you paid for it to happen in November and it didn't. But you're willing to pay for it in December as it will definitely have started then.

It does sound like she's ripping people off with the November payment.

Have you spoken to other parents? Does the nursery have a head office or owner above this woman?

Shakeyourwammyfannyfunkysong · 29/11/2025 12:25

Can you just explain very clearly OP is your aggrievance that you're being asked to pay in advance for an activity or that you're not being refunded for an activity that you haven't/will not be be doing?

OP is lucky to have you championing her cause with so much effort now that she has apparently stepped away.

Happy to be of service.

OP said it’s a monthly charge in her 3rd post on the first page. Read the thread.

I did, just not very well it seems 😂

mcmuffin22 · 29/11/2025 12:20

I understand what you mean. You pay say 4x£40 over the winter months for an additional activity. The nursery have added another month of payments but not actually done another month of the activity. What reason did they give for not doing it in November and are they tagging on an extra month at the end ? If not I would ask for a refund.

Didimum · 29/11/2025 12:19

schoolfriend · 29/11/2025 12:13

Ahhhhhh - it’s a monthly charge? I thought it was one annual charge and you’re getting wound up about paying for it a month early.

it’s unreasonable to charge you for a service you didn’t receive.

Jeronnemo · 29/11/2025 08:04

Nope. It's a monthly charge. I will pay it in December and it WILL happen in December. It's November that's the issue.

Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService · 29/11/2025 11:43

All the other things about lack of government funding etc (whilst true) are irrelevant in this case.

How are they irrelevant, though? IF a nursery is basically forced to make up an excuse to charge for the extra funding that plugs the gap, whilst not being allowed to explicitly state the truth, how else do they go about it?

Have the other parents not complained because they haven't noticed, don't want to rock the boat or have understood the tacit reality?

Are you for real? You condone nurseries adding imaginary charges to bills to cover ‘inadequate’ funding?

Yikes.

LiteraryBambi · 29/11/2025 12:12

Is it part of a chain? If so, I would contact head office.

If it isn't resolved then I would just not pay the last installment and explain you've already paid 5 fees for the 5 months. It's very unlikely they will kick you out, especially if you have 2 kids there

Didimum · 29/11/2025 12:09

CharnwoodFire · 29/11/2025 10:39

Gosh, the OP comes across as really aggressive in her comments.

I don't like aggressive people.

Good luck on Mumsnet!

I think if 30 ppl are asking then its not clear. Those that are asking are simply not being able to match up the dots because the posts are NOT clear. Others who aren't asking have made an assumption that op has been conned based on certain statements she has made. Let's prove it right now because I still dont get it and you obviously do (not saying that to be rude I genuinely mean I dont understand and I want you to explain it to me) has op been charged for an activity the kids are never going to do or has she been charged one month in advance and will continue to be charged so the number of charges matches the number of activities. Please confirm this and fingers crossed for all of us idiots who don't get it, op will confirm yes or no.

She has been charged for an activity that they are never going to do.

1st Nov payment was for activity in Nov.
1st Dec payment was for activity in Dec
… and so on until April.

Nursery didn’t do the activity in November, but won’t refund the activity money, and OP will be charged again in Dec and onwards.

Honest review on daynurseries.co.uk. Include pros and cons, highlighting inaccurate billing, not refunding and refusing to communicate with parents.

MysticChevron · 29/11/2025 12:01

Ay eye? Is that you??

Didimum · 29/11/2025 11:58

Makingpeace · 29/11/2025 10:29

Urm.....no I'm still unclear.

Thing happens in December, usually. Costs £40.
You paid £40 for the thing already.
It isn't December yet so thing hasn't happened.

Now is it:
(A) You want a refund because the thing isn't going to happen in December or any other time = reasonable to ask for a refund.
(B) You want a refund because the thing hasn't happened yet but it will, so you want a refund now (29th Nov) only then to be billed for it again in December (2 days away) = unreasonable to ask for a refund.
(C) Something else entirely.

Edited

It’s perfectly understandable and OP has explained multiple times.

She pays £40 per month, per child, for an activity that takes place Dec, Jan, Feb, March and April. She pays on the 1st of the month for that month’s attendance and activity. This year they charged for the activity on 1st November, but the activity did not happen in November. She will continue to pay on 1st Dec, Feb, March and April, so had paid for an extra month.

Read the thread. It’s not unclear.

bluewhitebluewhite · 29/11/2025 11:58

@Jeronnemo Do you have a history of falling out with people? Just wondering…

Your responses on this thread do not evidence your ability to be diplomatic, and as of now you have not provided details on what the lies are so that we can form an opinion.

Her question wasn’t on whether the lie sounded legitimate or not. Her question was whether to pursue it or accept it, knowing it was a lie.

YOU do not need an opinion on the lie itself to answer OP’s question.

OP’s answers have been entirely appropriate to streams of people not reading the thread properly.

PigeonsandSquirrels · 29/11/2025 11:47

X is an unknown excuse. You don’t need the specifics when you can surely imagine something… it was raining on the planned day (but it didn’t rain), there weren’t enough children booked in (but nursery was full), the court/pool/forest school was closed (but it was open). Not hard to imagine without needing exact details.

Edited

So shall I use my imagination to form an opinion on this situation? Seems nonsensical.

PrincessofWells · 29/11/2025 11:48

Just store it away and when your bill comes in for the final months payment when your children leave for good deduct it from the final payment.
