To think your eyes/eyeballs aren’t self cleaning?

I’m not sure how it came up in conversation but me and DH were rocking about showering/cleaning and DH mentioned he doesn’t open his eyes in the shower much. I asked how he cleans his eyeballs and he looked confused. Turns out he doesn’t wash his eyeballs at all. He closes his eyes and washes his face but not his actual eyes?

AIBU to tell him his eyes don’t clean themselves and he needs to open his eyes and rinse them with the shower?

😂 You are deliciously bonkers @HumourMeThis

Well yes obviously but you don’t get foreign objects in your eyes everyday to make them water, so surely they need washing daily too?

I grew up with this information. My parents told me how to wash my eyes and I remember being quite young when I still used to shower with my mum and she would wash her eyeballs this way too. I don’t think it’s as unusual as people make out.. similar to whether people wash their legs or not.

You’ve got to be taking the piss? Please tell me you’re trolling 😂

ETA - I see OP confirmed being a troll as suspected, but the sad thing is there are people this stupid out there 😫😂🙈

ElReverendoGreen · 28/11/2025 22:34

Jesus Christ. Of course your eyeballs are self cleaning 😨😣

what happens when you get an irritant in your eye? Your eye waters….to get the irritant out and to….clean it.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 28/11/2025 22:34

Ok, joke it was.

Let's hope nobody really thinks you should wash eyeballs!

BlakeCarrington · 28/11/2025 22:31

Beg pardon?

or the penis beaker one.

BaalSatanas · 28/11/2025 22:33

It’s actually illegal to wash your eyes unless you can take them out of their sockets, just saying.

murasaki · 28/11/2025 22:33

The thing is, even if the OP is joking, some other mad person said they did it!

Literally no thread about unusual washing habits will ever top the penis beaker thread. But nice try, OP.

I almost believed you for a minute.

Or Mexican House Thief or Maui Disney Princess… oh dear op, must try harder!

Ive always been taught to open my eyes under the shower and rinse my eyes because otherwise I would get conjunctivitis and infections because gunk builds up in them. Surely that makes sense! I can’t imagine not washing my eyes 😳

FFS, mains water is less hygienic than your tears.

You could of course try using bleach instead.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 28/11/2025 22:32

Well, if this isn't a joke, then it should be. It's quite funny 😅

Seriously OP, do you honestly think that eyes need to actually be washed? 🤔😵‍💫

I mean, as much as our tap water is safe to drink and possibly rinse your eyes out in an emergency if you need an eye bath for chemicals, I'd be very cautious if o was a contact wearer of opening my eyes in the shower to wash them! How do you think those who wear contact lenses in the shower get serious eye infections? (Hint: you shouldn't wear them in the shower)

Oh, it's a joke. Hilarious. 🙄

Strictlycomeparent · 28/11/2025 22:29

This is the weirdest concept! Isn’t it quite unpleasant?!

I’ve never felt my body vibrate by chuckling quite like it has in the last 40 minutes.

😆

Sneezo · 28/11/2025 21:14

I clean mine once a week properly with bleach, other than that it’s just a daily squirt of Cif.

I do hope you use a scourer or some wire wool to really give a thorough clean.

You don't want to confuse the two.

ilovepixie · 28/11/2025 21:52

I take mine out and leave them in a glass of water overnight with my teeth.

Is that next to the penis beaker?

Goatblu · 28/11/2025 22:23

Washing eyeballs..... I think I'll get the steamer on mine or hang my head out of the window when going through a car wash. They must be filthy after 50 odd years of neglect.

TheCompactPussycat · 28/11/2025 22:22

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 28/11/2025 22:15

My mum used to put a little bit of bleach in our bath water when she cleaned us. I had to make her promise not to put bleach in my children’s baths! I think OP has gone to the same school of cleaning.

Actual bleach?

Or Dettol medicated liquid which was widely used in the 1970s (Dettol bath) and is still available?
