To think my niece doesn’t really get a say on how good or bad she thinks the budget is

I’m a single mum, I work full time, I have 3 children and I just about get by.
My niece is 26, she makes almost 100k (got lucky, was in the right rooms either the right people), and inherited 500k from her paternal grandparents.
She doesn’t have uni debt, she doesn’t have childcare costs. She happily pays £500 a month for a fancy London gym, lives in a flat share with her best friend etc.
Today she told me she didn’t think the budget went far enough etc. that Labour are useless and so on. She is a Lib Dem/Tory voter and very against reform too.

AIBU to say that young people in a privileged position shouldn’t really get to comment as they aren’t facing the same difficulties others are.

The issue is she wasn’t willing to listen to my perspective as someone who is struggling financially. Most of the things mentioned will have no impact on her at all, she doesn’t drive, doesn’t have children, earns well, doesn’t have student loan debt etc.
The only thing that was relevant to her was the cash Isas but she said herself she already puts all her savings in a stocks and shares ISA so no change, and the salary sacrifice will impact her but that’s years away.

She isn’t willing to listen and the policies she supports have no impact on her? Well, if she ever wants to change career, I’m sure Kemi would welcome her.

Also, where is she managing to spend £500 / month on a gym?

It’s nothing to do with her being a woman, if she was male in her situation.
Its everything to do with her being in a privileged position, largely due to luck and having no empathy for those not in the same boat.

You can have empathy but still feel stung by the budget, you can have empathy while thinking you’re paying too much tax for what you personally receive in return. If she’s on a six figure salary she’ll be paying a huge amount of tax while using very few services, of course she can have an opinion about that.

Firefly1987 · 26/11/2025 22:16

I wanted an easy life and not to have multiple mouths to feed and childcare costs, so I didn't have kids. Presumably this was an option for you if you didn't wan to just scrape by? We all make choices.

She didn’t go to uni, she works in the creative industries, her break very much came from being in the right room. I’m proud of her for succeeding but her success is a niche avenue of an already niche industry that most can’t access.

Then that’s even more impressive, no one is chucking 100 k at a 26 yewr old as she was there. And you’re not proud of her, you’re jealous as hell.

Dennien · 26/11/2025 21:51

She grew up in council houses with low income parents so I’m shocked at her lack of empathy if I’m totally honest.

Her lack of empathy @Dennien?

"she makes almost 100k (got lucky, was in the right rooms either the right people)

Got lucky?

TwinkleTwinkleLittleBatgirl · 26/11/2025 22:14

@Dennien do you think people on disability benefits or are non contributing should also be banned from having opinions?

ACatNamedRobin · 26/11/2025 22:13

Ladies and gentlemen, entitlement culture!
As exemplified by OP here.

It doesn’t matter what room she was in, if she was bad at what she does she wouldn’t have got or kept her job.

You’re right, only men who own land and are over 30 should be allowed a political opinion and to vote. Given she sounds like a net contributor in terms of government spending and taxes, she’s funding the government spending announced, so of course she gets to have a view.

Rachie1973 · 26/11/2025 22:12

Of course she’s entitled to an opinion! Do you think she shouldn’t be allowed to vote either?

InlandTaipan · 26/11/2025 22:12

Lol, yes let's have a system where only net beneficiaries of the welfare/tax system get a say, or only those with children, or only those over 50, or only those with a Mercedes benz - that'll work.

Democracy isn't perfect but at least you're allowed to think and have an opinion.

She must be very talented to get the job. Nobody is going to fork out 100k for no good reason

No one earns 100k purely based on luck! Seriously get a grip, stop minimising her success!

So, she placed herself in all the right rooms then. Did you?

Dennien · 26/11/2025 22:09

Wickedlittledancer · 26/11/2025 22:07

She doesn’t earn 100 k due to luck and being in the right room as you said in your op. She earns that as she went for it, studied at uni, applied for the jobs, and it won’t have been easy either.

honestly how horrible your envy has made you.

Ah ok op, so she’s one of those who are seen to be “you earn well, you should be happy to pay increased taxes towards others, and if you don’t you’re aaaawwful!!”

Yep, and because OP has no way of taking any of her niece’s money away from her, she wants to take away her right to have an opinion instead.

How old are you?

SleepyLemur · 26/11/2025 22:05

Dennien · 26/11/2025 21:50

No she wanted further welfare reforms and spending cuts, she deeply resents supporting people who are out of work or on low incomes. Always says “they just need to up-skill and earn more”.

Oh well then I disagree with her, but that doesn't mean she isn't entitled to an opinion. Unfortunately our country has had many senior politicians from very privileged backgrounds who also probably have no idea about the lives of most people in the population, but they were still entitled to an opinion.

I would just not let her opinions or different lifestyle bother you. If you want you could try to explain your concerns about the budget to her, but except she may not apprecaite them still

peanutbuttertoasty · 26/11/2025 22:04

Happy to take her money via her tax contributions though, eh?

Jealous, entitled British pysche. This mindset is exactly what's making our country economically sick. If you don't like your circumstances, do something about it. She did.

localbutterfly · 26/11/2025 22:03

She's entitled to her opinion, but if as you say she's telling you exactly how she feels and what she thinks should happen while not listening to your experience and opinions, cut off the conversation; there's no point in having it if it's completely one-sided. Just agree to disagree, and take comfort in the fact that there IS some relief in this budget and that the current government do understand that some people are suffering and can't just pull themselves up by the bootstraps to fix all of their problems instantaneously like your niece thinks they should.

Wickedlittledancer · 26/11/2025 22:03

Being jealous of your own niece and starting a thread about her is really distasteful op; as is trying to silence people.

yes she gets an opinion, everyone gets an opinion on politics, it effects us all and no you don’t get to silence people.

get a grip on your envy.

Well, she’s in her boat and you’re in yours. I’m assuming you didn’t blindly walk into ending up with 3 kids in your boat so why should she be concerned about you ‘just getting by’? Her opinion on the budget is just as valid as yours.
