New guy started at work…conversation went like this.
set the scene, he had just mentioned to a co worker that his wife hates eggs so he can’t make them at home so he was happy he could get them in the canteen.
me- ah where does your wife work, I hope they don’t serve eggs there (joking)
him- (laughing)oh she doesn’t work…she’s at home preparing for the baby.
me- oh how lovely. Congratulations’ when is baby due?
him- well she’s not actually pregnant yet…we’re just trying.
me- oh…ok.

other colleagues were very confused…as was I…is this normal? 😆

Why is everyone acting like she can’t just be a housewife? People do still do that

I think its "faux confusion" to make a passive aggressive statement about that.

Some people are lazy.
And some of those have others that can indulge their sloth.
It was ever thus.

Agreed, if he is happy to have his spouse not work, then fair play to them.

Not sure why you’re getting so much flack for a true statement.

It’s a northerner thing I think 😂

I agree with you - asking what your partner does for work is a perfectly normal thing, if you think it's safe enough to ask. Asking people if they have a partner, also normal. It's called chit-chat. This said, the older I get, the less I want to know, and I've never cared all that much either way. People will tell me what they want to know.

Added to which, I was once in a terribly embarrassing situation with a woman who was paying me to do a job...she began telling me about a situation her friend was in, and I can't begin to describe the size of all the fucks I couldn't have given, but never the less, she was a client, so I listened and at one point said "goodness, you wouldn't imagine anyone doing that knowing it would catch up with them", only to be told off majorly for asking personal questions about her friend and that there's no way she'd have told her friends anything about me like I had asked. I think a part of my brain died that day. 😫

Whattosay1 · 26/11/2025 22:26

No I love my job, what’s that got to do with anything.
I never considered fertility treatments…thank you all.

Well the wife might not have either - until she had to.

I think you were being a bit low empathy not to have considered that tbh.

Calliopespa · 27/11/2025 23:49

RoundandSad · 26/11/2025 21:43

Perhaps he's embarrassed to say she doesn't work because people are very judgy about that now

... people like op ...

Gottabeehonest · 27/11/2025 23:45

Yes it's normal. I don't understand why it's confusing. You asked about her work, he said she doesn't work as she is preparing for a baby, you asked when it was due, he said she isn't pregnant yet.

I know I can be seen as cold and uncaring, but if a new starter had told me that, I wouldn't be interested enough to give it more headroom, other than to consider that this might be a hugely sensitive topic for him (and that it also might not be) and to let him be the one who mentions it next. People say all sorts of things in place of "mind your own business". People also embellish and infer...I remember someone asking a person I knew how far away from his home was his workplace. He said "oh it's an hour and a halves drive". Which it may have been. Fact was, he couldn't drive and spent the best part of three hours each morning trying to get there on two busses. Sometimes people just don't like the facts getting in the way of a good story.

When “you are/you’re” not even pregnant. Maybe she’s at home educating herself so she can be a great mother. Maybe she’s unwell. Maybe she sits around eating bonbon’s all day. No one else’s business.

We are all judgemental as creatures - however, some of us have the sense to keep it in our own heads.

Or he could have just replied that they dont work which would have been the end of the conversation

CareerChange24 · 27/11/2025 23:17

Hankunamatata · 27/11/2025 23:07

Op you were totally normal in your conversation.

I would have found it odd about being at home preparing for a baby when your not even pregnant. Iv never met anyone who has stayed at hime for fertility treatment as mentioned on here

Silverbirchleaf · 26/11/2025 21:44

Well, that is an unusual situation, to be at home doing nothing, unless there was a medical reason for her not working.

Being at home doesn't mean you're doing nothing. Housewives we're the norm 50 years ago, even before children.

CareerChange24 · 26/11/2025 22:53

It’s not your place to have “considered” anything. They don’t owe you an explanation. You are judgey, think too highly of yourself and need to mind your own business.

And you’re not judgey??

Tbf I would consider that friendly conversation and getting to know a co-worker a little better, just small talk. No harm meant by it although if he looked or seemed uncomfortable at all I’d change the subject. I wouldn’t consider it weird if someone asked me what my partner did for work but maybe that’s just me 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yes, it probably is just you.

Easterchicken · 27/11/2025 23:03

Shes the home maker....they're trying for first baby they may be struggling and having to go down fertility treatment

Some people prefer traditional roles and traditional living which is fine

Let's hope they are happy

Why he so rude and judgy ... And to then make a post to laugh at them further

CareerChange24 · 27/11/2025 23:02

BeanQuisine · 27/11/2025 22:51

Sleepyandtiredandlazy · 26/11/2025 22:15

Tbh I think it's quite strange you turned his comment about his wife not liking eggs into a question about where does she work.
Considering you said he was laughing when he made his comment about her not working and preparing for the baby I would take it with a pinch of salt anyway.
I certainly wouldn't give it head space.

In some cultures, yes. What I admire though, is that he’s supporting his partner . That’s beautiful x

Wickedlittledancer · 27/11/2025 16:20

I find it really odd to use it as an opportunity to ask where his wife works. Do you fancy him or something? You seem a little over invested in his wife.

I was also going to say that the conversation sounded vaguely flirty from OPs end….

Emmz1510 · 27/11/2025 22:41

What an odd conversation! You for the whole serving eggs at work weirdness and him for saying she’s preparing for the baby but isn’t even pregnant yet.
Yeah it might be fertility treatment?
Or maybe adoption?

More likely you just caught him off guard and he had a bit of a brain fart!

ACatNamedRobin · 27/11/2025 16:09

@pikkumyy77
Why?

Sloth is a mortal sin, according to Christianity which is ostensibly the moral code for millions.

And even without being a Christian one can hold a bad view of it.

Edited

It's an ugly thing (and frankly, fucking weird) to accuse anyone of a 'mortal sin' when you have no idea whatsoever if they're committing it.

Redpeach · 27/11/2025 17:23

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 26/11/2025 22:25

I literally would just have said ‘lovely’ and given it no further thought. I assume you hate your job?

Why would op hate their job?

I think this thread shows that. Also she could have a medical condition that means she can't work or it would be very difficult to work but he just met you so might not want to disclose her private medical information.

This. Not sure why you were "stumped". He's just saying his wife doesn't work.

Lucky lady.
